First of all guys, it's illegal to ask applicants for a SSN.  You can only ask if you are at the point of offering them a job.  This means they have to make you an offer (often pending background/drug test) pending any other pre-hire requirements being met (like verifying experience, degree, etc.).  Then, IF you fail or something, they can decide not to hire you.  BUT, they cannot make you give a SSN until the offer is made.  The reason being, why would you want hundreds of companies you never even work for to have your private SSN?  You can't be assured all of those companies will be careful with your number or that all their employees will.  This is to protect you, but yet tons of companies (I'd even say most) still ask for it on applications.  I just leave it blank.

Second, this company constantly contacts for jobs they don't even have open.  Do not waste your time.

Just received a phone call from this number. It sounded like an Indian woman with a very thick accent.  didn't reveal her name, or the headhunting agency she was affiliated with.  Said she had a contract position for an admin/asst and asked for my social security number, which I didn't give her. It's a scam.

It is a tech sourcing service.  They are recruiters who call because you are on Dice.com, Monster or some job site or have worked with them in the past.  The recruiters share your name so you get numerous calls and emails.  It is a first come; first serve game.  If you are the first 5+/- to respond, you get submitted.  If not - on to the next round.  No scam or bogus just hard to get.
