This number had been calling my cell for about two weeks but I didnt answer it-not knowing the number. On July 21st I answered, my mistake! This man said his name was Mike Cooper with Anderson Law Office and that there was a lawsuit being field against me when I told him I had no idea what this was about he said "You dont know - poop " Then he read me an affidavit with my ss# and bank acct# - telling me when I tried to ask questions to not talk till he was done. I asked for copies of the info he refused but said if I didnt pay I would loose my job(i collect disability) When I said this he simply hung up. My daughter called back to try to atlest get the date that I was supposedly needed in court - In LA California since I live in Oregon this was important! They gave her the run arround and she told them I was representing myself so leagaly they have to provide me with the info just like they would to my attourney they replied- "you cant represent yourself" She of course said that was a lie and anyone can do this if they choose the man laughed-said you will have the info in 24 hrs "And God Help You" and hung up. Looking up the info I could get I discovered this is a total scam this butt should be jailed!!!

I received a call from Joe Brown regarding a fraud case.He said he was with Anderson Law Office and the number was 530-331-8829. He told me that I was under criminal investigation, I had charges put against me for fraud, because they had to tried to contact me via email ( from an address I havent used in years since middle school) from an online loan company named "insta- cash",  and that I had two options I could bring 5-6k to court and pay the judge or pay 671.33 by fax. I had told him obviously I am not a criminal, Ive never been arrested or anything, and haven't been served papers or aware of any court dates. I asked to speak to an Attorney at his law office and he had let me know he was "the first and last person I could talk to about this case". After talking to him getting all the information I could, like when I was wired the alleged amount to my bank account, the IP address ( from the computer used), he was un able to give me any information. But he knew my name, address, last 4 ssn, phone number.

I research this online, talked to my bank, attorney, and the state of Delaware's Attorney General; he is a scam artist. After talking to all these people realizing I've done nothing wrong, I decided to call "Mr. Joe Brown" back letting him know that riping people off is not the way to be successful. Being an 18 year old, single mother, working my a** off, putting my self through college, raising my kid, and running my household, I do not need to be bothered- nor does anyone else with this crap. And he had the audacity to tell me then I guess I will see you in court tomorrow.

I received a similar call from a supposed Anderson Law Associates with some hard to understand language.  Sounded Asian or Indian, could hardly hear what they were saying they were talking so fast.  They kept telling me that I received a loan from InstantCashUsa.com and that I did not pay it back.  They recited my ss number, phone number and bank acct number.  They said they had tried to process fees several times and had come back insufficient funds.  I never took out a loan from anyone.  The man said he was Joe Brown and I was being charged with 3 accounts of criminal fraud, for unlawful use of e-mail, check fraud and something else. They said I owed $698 and I should have my attorney call to be processed the papers.  He said I could settle this today by faxing paper a letter to him stating I wanted to settle today out of court with a credit card number and a statement.  Up to this point I was freaked with all the info they had and said I do not know what this supposed debt is but if there are charges against me I want to get it taken care of.  I asked who to contact and they said tthat the original person had charged off my debt and was not ready to speak to me at this time.  The number they called from was 530-331-8829.  After I hung up on him I did a reverse phone look up and it said the number was unpublished but was from Yreka, CA  I called my attorney he said to ignore them that this was not legitimate legal action that it was a scam.a    After reading this website, I called back to see if the same things happened that some of you posted.  I called and asked to speak to Joe Br, there was a lot of chatter and noise, finally after 5 minutes a person that sounded just like the Michael person who answered the phone came on saying he was Joe Brown.  I told him I needed his, address, he kept saying what phone number are you calling from.  I said I need your address and he said he would give it to me if I provided  my phone number, then he hung up on me

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Louisiana of debt collection scam

July 21, 2010 and many months prior to telephone calls to myself, family, work and friends are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

These people are going to cause me to lose my job and more respect for our protection.  Please help.

I called the police in San Fran and the desk Sargeant said they have been getting calls about this address for 3 weeks. These people are the scum of the earth. My colleagues and I had fun with this for an entire day. We called so many times they put a recording on that they were closed for the day.

I just received a call from 7608204356.  Said his name was Roy Jackson, very thick Foreign accent and then I talked to a Jack Wood, Same Accent.  I was told that papers would be served to my house and to my boss.  I informed that in the state of Texas they cannot do that and for them to quit calling me and quit calling my job.  These people need to go make an honest living and leave us alone

From Lamet's post:

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

Frances,
I just had the same call as you on my cell phone. This Joe Brown had all of my information just like you. He talked so fast with a thick accent and told me about some lawsuit I had agianst me and asked if I had a criminal attourney because this was a very serious matter and they verifyed my last four digits of my social even has my checking account info right, my job info right, even my family's names. Before I realized what was happening he had me agree to paying what he said had to be paid today or I would be arrested within the hour for federal charges and fraud. I never had an issue lke this before and panicked. I turned to a family member for help and when I agreed to pay an installment they proceeded to tell me that I had to fax a letter that was notorized promiseing to pay and on what date. And that I will not dispute this transaction. Then a copy of my drivers licence. I caught on and said I will get back in touch with them when it's done and called MY attourney to press charges. I'm off today and get a call from my boss they have called there and due to the nature of this issue I need to fix it fast or I am out of a job. I work with children everyday and this is showing I'm untrustworthy. My lawyer assures me something can be done. Good luck. And Don't send any money!!!!!!!! Big mistake!!!!

On Friday, July 15, 2010 I received a call from 760-820-4356.  The individual indicated he was from Anderson Law Associates and his name was Joe Brown.  I responded to his voice mail and when I called the office, they said they had no such person but they would check-now "Joe Brown" had one of the thickest accents I have heard recently-don't know if he was in India or what.  Anyway, when I finally spoke with him he started ranting and raving and said he would take legal action against me and I owed thousands-WRONG-True I borrowed some money and am slowly paying it back-but really and then he had the nerve to say he would be sending Marshals to my home and I would be arrested if I did not come up with 5 grand!  Then he said I have helped you all I can but you need to say that you know you broke the law and that you are paying it back and I will record that.  Is he crazy?!?!?!?  He went on to say God Bless!  Oh and I called the number back and asked for their address and was put on hold for 10 minutes then I hung up.  I am out of work and trying to find a job so being harrassed by people who may have bought a loan and are a 5th party does not help at all.  Anyone else in this fix?

I am an attorney with a client who received a similar call from this number on 7/13/2010.  We were able to identify the owner of the phone number (a California based reseller) and contacted their fraud department this morning.  We directed the investigator to this web page for further evidence of the scam activity.  He said that hey would be shutting down the phone number.

I just received a phone call from the same phone number from a person identifying himself as Bryan O'Connor, however, it was obvious that English was not his first language.  He sounded like he was from India.  At any rate, he had all my information, address, phone number, last 4 digits of my ss and even where I do my banking!  In addition he had my sister's name, which he said I gave as an reference when I applied for a loan, supposedly from "Gas Mat USA."  He also said that I was being charged with violation of the federal banking law, collertal check fraud and theft by deception.

This is crazy!  He wouldn't let me get a word in edgwise, he just hung up on me.  He said the papers would be filed today and then they would be emailed to me at my yahoo account.
