I got a text yesterday, text 9099, customer issue, etc. for jefferson financial service. I also do not bank with that credit union; I use another one. It said to please call at 786 425 0042.
Today I got basically the same message, but the phone number was now 303 325 7300.
I'm reporting this to any & all agencies I can think of, including Sprint!!!

I got this text today as did my husband, my friend, and my kid! I have heard that if you call numbers like this your phone could be charged thousands of dollars. Please just delete the text. DO NOT CALL that number!! You can't contest it with the phone company either because they will just say that you willingly made the call, and to take it up with the business. Trouble is the business is that of a scam artist! BEWARE!

Everyone in the family and everyone at work received the text from 1-786-425-0042. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know better and calls this number. Probably thousands got the text and they hope to just get a few replies who will give out account numbers. This is the 3rd scam text I have received this year. Thanks for the FTC NUMBER WILL CALL NOW.

Have gotten texts twice now. Texting costs money. I would never give financial info over cell phone or internet. Something needs to be done to protect people who live in the greater NOLA area because someone may really use the real financial credit union.

I received it as well. Just fired off an email as described above. I suggest the same actions from everyone else.

I just did a little homework and found this:
Phishing Alert!
A number of local Credit Unions, including Jefferson Financial Credit Union have been the targets of phishing attacks. Criminals are sending out fraudulent messages via email and text message requesting members to visit counterfeit websites or call fraudulent phone numbers.
The counterfeit sites and automated phone system request credit card numbers and / or PINs. Please be reminded that your financial institution WILL NEVER ask you for your personal information, whether it is via a website OR a voice recorded phone call unless you initiated the contact.
We understand that these messages are going to consumers that do not have accounts with our credit union. That does not mean you are not at risk. If you provide ANY banking/credit card information, you are at risk of being victimized.
If you responded to a message and are concerned that your information is at risk please call us directly at 504-348-2424.
Help us combat identity theft and phishing attacks by emailing the following statement to spam@uce.gov AND fraud@jeffersonfinancial.org.
Here is a sample email that you might want to use when contacting the FTC:
I recently received a message from an unknown source informing me that there was an issue with my credit/debit card account. I have confirmed that (INSERT NUMBER OR INSERT WEBSITE HERE) is a fraudulent number or websitattempting to phish my private financial information. Please disconnect this number to protect individuals from this phishing attempt.
To contact the FTC by phone please call (877)382-4357.

I'm in New Orleans also and do not bank with anyone called Jefferson
Financial. This is very strange?????? Just the same as you I tried to get someone on the line but it keeps asking for a 16 digit number. Sounds like some scam to me.
| DJ Buddha 2009-12-09 16:20:31 Unknown |
