Just got billed $8.43 on my ATT bill for Transaction Clearing.  It says for VOICE MSG SVC SETUP.
I also got charges for ID Select Security INC. for $13.82.  These are both scams and fraudulent. Why is ATT allowing them to do this? It makes no sense. I'll deal with it tomorrow during business hours but I am very frustrated with this. This is crazy!

Parents (with whom I have not lived with for fifteen years) called me regarding a 1-800 number I supposedly set up on their account.  They told me when they called BELLSOUTH, that's the information BellSouth gave them.  BellSouth told them to call the 800-215-1961 number for billing questions, and they would not tell my parents anything, but they told them they would remove the charges.  They also told my parents that "anyone can sign up for the services as long as they have your name and phone number."

16 Ways You Can be Phone Scammed

18 Nov 2008
When we started 800Notes.com we had no idea that telemarketing fraud comes in so many flavors.

The variations include 'cramming', 'slamming', credit card scams, calls from telemarketers pretending to be IRS, sweepstakes and lotteries scams, advance fee  loan scams, phone toner scams, fat finger dialing scams, and area code phone scams.

Typically the goal is to get you to reveal personal, bank account information, or to make you do something that will result in unwanted charges on your account. Individuals and businesses are equally affected by these scams although the schemes might be different.

In this article I will outline the 16 most popular phone scams. I am sure there are more, so if you have been a victim of a phone scam, or you know of a phone scam not mentioned here, please share it with me and the readers in the comments.

Send this article to your family members, co-workers, and employees. Give it to your teenage kids and elderly parents (studies show they are the most vulnerable to the scams).

As the old saying goes, "Forewarned is Forearmed".

11. "Cramming": When monthly charges pop up on your telephone bill for optional services that you never authorized such as voice mail, paging, or club membership, it's called "cramming."

You may be asked to return a missed call because it?s 'Your lucky day' and you?ve won a trip to Las Vegas.

When the call is made, an automated system is activated and you are unknowingly enrolled in a club or program, and the charge is placed on your phone bill.

The crammer might not even need to do anything except simply pick your phone number out of the blue and place charges on your bill through your local telephone company, claiming that you agreed to purchase some services.

Look at your bill closely every month.

Charges for optional services should be itemized and show the name of the company providing them and its phone number. If you did not authorize the services, call that number and insist that they be canceled and the charges removed from your bill.

Also, consider putting a third party block on your phone service. It's often free and it does not let any third party add charges to your phone bill.

went the same way as others with mybillingsvcmnthly fee.  called the 800 number and got them to drop the charge (seemly too easy).  asked them if I could sign others up for this service by using names and phone numbers out of the telephone book.  really think it is fraud, especially after hearing the rest of the very similar stories.  what really bothers me is the phone provider (Verizon) acting as a collection agent for these people.  they ought to at the minimum, provide some oversigh in what they are doing, at the best, get out of this business and concentrate on what they are suppose to be doing.

I also saw the numer on my Verizon Bill,  I called Verizon to ask what it was they told me to call the number that was on my phone bill (1-800-736-7500).  When I called they told me I had signed up on the internet, I point blank told the lady you are telling a lie, I don't sign up for anything on the internet, I asked how long have you been billing me?  she said since October of 2009 I said I am going to pull all of my bills to check, I asked the lady her name she said her name was Carol, she then asked me why am I just calling, I told her I thought it was for Verizon, I asked Carol what was this billing for, she said voice mail and unlimited long distant, I said you are lying again, I have this service though Verizon, (SHE ACTED AS IF SHE WAS BEING TOLD WHAT TO SAY).  Carol then said they will refund my money for the (five 5 months @ ($8.23 a month) and give me a confirmation number and I would see the refund in (1 or 2 billing periods). When I payed my March bill I deducted ($16.46), I called Verizon to let them know I would be deducting this money for Feb. and March they asked me why I am not waiting for these people to refund me I said I don't trust them they said OK.  I believe Verizon knows about this service.  One week later someone from this company "My Billing Services" call me and told me my refund has been completed and gave me a phone number if I have any questions to call 1-800-215-1961, (ALL OF YOU THAT IS READING THIS DON'T CALL THIS NUMBER) because I have been getting a lot of 800,866, and 877 calls when I answer the phone no one says anything. One of the numbers I have been getting these calls from when no one says anything is the 1-800-2151961 (THIS IS THE SAME NUMBER THE LADY GIVE ME TO CALL IF I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS).  (Everyone of you that is getting billed and has this complaint go figure out)!!!! Something is not right with VERIZON!!!!!!!  Look on your phone bill it will be under OTHER PROVIDERS,  on my bill under OTHER PROVIDERS It says THE BILLING RESOURCE.  THEN IT READS: This Portion of your bill is provided as a service to the BILLING RESOURCE. If you fail to pay your phone bill your service won't be turned off, but if you fail to pay Billing Resource they can pursue collections indendendly.  HA!!! HA!!! LOL

Same here.  When I saw my September Verizon bill it was higher than normal.  Then I found a charge for $8.43 plus tax from "Mybillingsvcsetupfee".  I called and had them remove the charge and then they told me they also charged for next month.  I had to ask them again to remove that charge too.  Maybe they were thinking I only wanted one month's charge removed.  Then I called verizon and had a third party block placed on my number.  Shame on you Verizon for letting this happen.

Opened my Aug. Verizon landline bill and saw charges for "My billing set up fee" for $8.43. And a charge for "the billing resource non-basic service charges, $8.94.

I called up the "MY Billing, at the above number. The operator said, that I must have done something online, like entered a "contest". It appears that this is a 1-800 voicemail box company. The only thing is that I/we didnt authorize this. I told the operator that I didnt order this and this appears to be fraudulent. She said that she would remove this and credit next months bill. I did get a cancel confirm number.
BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE ANOTHER ONLINE SCAM!!!

A charge for two months of this garbage came up on my phone bill and try as I might I could not contact them by phone so I called the phone company and they took the charges off of the bill and then I found a site where I could write and tell them I DID not order the service and they best not charge me again next month.

I wondered why my phone bill had gone up so I started looking and that is what I found.

The telephone operator said I might have filled out a form on the computer and gave my phone number and that is where they got it but that is not the case because I don't use my phone number on line.

Got my Qwest bill today & this charge also showed up and we did not sign up for this service---DUH!  I have VOICEMAIL WITH QWEST!Why WOULD I need this?!  I called Qwest & told them someone is fraudulently using my telephone number to bill services to my home phone.
Qwest filled out a 3rd party block, while I was on the phone with them, so that NO charges like this can be made to my telephone.  Last month it was Smiley.com this month it is this mybillingservices.com.  Qwest credited my account for the amount charged and when I got ahold of the customer service people at this mybillingservices.com, they couldn't get me off the phone fast enough!  The did not verify the NAME nor the ADDRESS they had on file, only the phone number??  I explained our phone number is fraudulently being used by someone else and that it has been reported to Qwest and a third party block has been placed by Qwest on my number.  As soon as I used the "fraud" word, they couldn't get me off the phone fast enough!
