Got a call on my cell phone from this number on 11/11/2008.

800-262-3787 is Ancestry.com. They call people who sign up for the 2-week free trial to see if you need any kind of help using the site. Obviously, this gesture is meant to encourage you to sign up when the trial is over, but I can tell you from personal experience, they don't do a hard sell. At least the two I spoke to didn't.

The problem is that the number has no ID, and they never leave a message, so you automatically assume it's a telemarketer. I've told them about this, but they haven't yet chosen to add an ID to the number. Oh well.

I can't imagine how or why they would be calling the numbers of people who didn't even sign up for a free trial. They do have a do-not-call list. You can always call them and instruct them to add your name and number to that list, and at that time, make it clear that you have never called them nor signed up for their site.

Did at the time this call was supposedly made, were you by chance researcing any geneology on the internet?

I'm a British Telecom customer living in London. My latest phone bill shows that I made two calls to this number on 11th November 2008. I most certainly didn't; I haven't made an international call for months! I 'googled' the number to see what came up, and found this.
