This company called and left an ominous message on my voice mail. I have contacted the police, and will not fool around with these people.
Kerry 2014-03-14 02:56:57 Debt Collector
They called my number and left a message that they were trying to collect a debt. Didn't say who they wanted to speak to or who they were representing, but I do believe it's illegal to leave a collection message on an answering machine.

Follow the steps in what you need to know.. Then if it persists, you can file a report with your States Attorney General, the FTC and CFB.

DavidKDeadbeat please stand up 2014-02-03 18:58:09 Debt Collector
Yet another debt collector looking for some guy we don't know and had never heard of until two years ago. We have received over 1,200 calls for David K. the Deadbeat in the past two years. We have never answered a single one of these calls, yet they keep calling and calling and leaving messages and leaving messages, some times as many as six times a day. There are lulls where we don't get any calls for a couple of months, but then David K. the Deadbeat's zombie debt is sold to another debt collector and the phone harassment starts again. This has been our house number for almost ten years, so the debt is either over a decade old or David K. the Deadbeat lied and gave them the wrong number more recently. Focus Receivables, David K. the Deadbeat, Phillips & Cohen, and all the other debt collectors looking for David K. the Deadbeat really should pay our phone bill, since they use our phone more than we do. They also should be sentenced to living in a house filled with ever-ringing phones and made to retrieve voicemails for people they don't know and miss several important calls for at least two years--the same thing they've done to us! FTC complaints are utterly useless--we know, we've filed MANY to no avail. Same thing happened to a local IT professional on his company 24-hour on call cell phone. His company's lawyers have even sent these bozos endless cease and desist letters and told the bozos repeatedly that the guy they're looking for never worked there and it was never his number, but the bozos keep on calling. We're afraid to go through all the hassle of changing our house number and end up with another number some other deadbeat has used. We just keep hoping to wait it out until David K. the Deadbeat's zombie debt lumbers off into the sunset for the last time.

Someone called asking for my stepmom and I asked who it was and she said her name was "Audrey Howell" calling for 'personal business inquiries'. Apparently, I told her she didn't speak English and she said to 'disregard the call'.

I received a phone call from this number and the man said that he called from Focus Receivable Management LLC. to attempt to collect a debt and asked me to return his call. I need to say that I do not owe anyone anything and I am not running away from anyone so that I have to get a call from a debt collector. This is so annoying and I will sue them for sure if they keep calling me for this ridiculous reason again.

This group was callling me repeatedly trying to collect a debt for DirecTV. I don't owe Directv anything.I just kept telling the collection agents that I don't do business over the phone, I don't share personal info over the phone, period. After telling them this about a dozen times they finally stopped calling.

If you all don't stop chanting "Do Not Call list" I will become very cranky.
The DNC registry is for telemarketers, meaning sales, meaning all debt collectors are exempt. This fact was not kept secret from you when you registered your numbers. Attorneys general and the FTC are valid complaint venues which help the public good. But understand that you must confront collection agencies directly if you dislike their treatment of your privacy and consumer rights.
If Focus or any other agency thinks you owe something, be sure to respond on real paper to its federally required dunning letter with a dispute and validation request, adding that you either restrict or revoke consent to call again. Given the industry's documented need to break laws to get at your assets, you should dispute even if you agree slightly with its claim.
If the account is not legally collectable, or it's simply not you they want, you're free to send a full cease-comm, cutting off all contact. Send all notices via USPS Certified with return card. The FTC and many consumer watchdogs explain how to draft them. Pay close attention to all communication and document it well. If those contacts yield legal violations, you may collect from *them* through a judge or arbitrator.
Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov.

An AG complaint is NOT "the only way to stop them". You have both federal and state laws which grant private right of action. When collectors violate your rights, you can sue them into submission for low or no cost. You might have a hands-on AG, or you may have one who is content to send you a soothing form letter months after the fact, during which time you risk wasting your chance to go to court yourself.
Resident47 2012-03-12 15:25:03 Unknown
Your caller is not going to dutifully study random forum complaints and cannot magically determine which numbers should not be called based on anonymous comments. You must send your demands directly to the collection agency, which does not maintain this site or this web page.
Mike 2012-03-08 16:31:49 Unknown
File a complaint with your States Attorney General. Filing a complaint with the FTC on the "Do Not Call" site does nothing.
Focus is practicing illegal collection practices. The only way to stop them is to file the complaint with the Attorney General.
