You only need to register your number once unless you get a new phone number or add a cell phone! The registry is permanent.

Scammers/fraud/extortionist don't obey the laws or use the DNC, but its a different story if a legit business is dunning you repeatedly!  However, scammers spoof legitimate business numbers also. So I'd be looking for the real number and call it first and tell them whats going on and tell them to stop if it is them.  If they do not, then they are in trouble! File reports with the FTC & FCC.

This is Los Angeles Times billing. The only problem is that I am not a customer. Someone used  my phone number and I get up to ten phone calls a day trying to collect money.  I have put my number on do not call at least five times.  I am ready to sue them.

The latest victim haha.  Got a call from an 800-316-4342 number.  As you all know, they said I had a balance due for the LA Times.  Up to this point, I have been getting the paper every Sunday.  Admittingly, I did sign up for a FREE subscription for 1 month on my school campus.  The lady told me I would not have to pay any money.  This is where i failed, of course.  She lied to me and it was a scam.  I took the advice of some people here and called the LA Times Direct Billing at 800-528-4637 x73464 .  Talked to a lady named Jamie and I told her what happened.  She canceled my subscription and canceled the balance that I "supposedly owed".  My word of advice, if you're a college student, don't sign up for anything!  NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE!  If I see that lady or any other person selling the LA TIMES on campus next semester, I'm ripping all they paperwork.  ALL HAIL THE STRUGGLING COLLEGE STUDENT!

The caller presumably named Jimmy , said tht my account hadn't been paid since August 2012.
I called L.A.Times billing and spoke with Andrea ,who check their records only to find that not only am I up to date with payment , but paid up through June 16, 2013.

the same thing happened to me. stupid high school kid asked me if i could help him out with a scholarship and they sent me a letter to cancel a subscription for $32. then after so many times of them calling me, I talked to smoe guy and he said to cancel for 5 bucks and call the day after so it won't go into collections.
that's what I get for trying to help people.

1-800-316-4342 - I have never had an account with the LA Times - I called the LA Times number 1-800-528-4637 number, the extension x73464 took me to an automated system that asked me to verify the address matching my phone number.  Since they did not match it took me to a loop asking for my address.  I started over and went through the operator to get to customer service.  As someone who has worked in customer service, I could instantly tell that this was an overseas company handling their customer service.  They representative was friendly but ultimately unhelpful. All she could say is that she would escalate to upper management, she would not give me a ticket number for the issue.  In the end she gave me her operator ID# and her "name" Jenny.  I will see if the calls stop...but will not hesitate to call LA  Times again until they do.  The calls are 5 to 6 times a day to my cell number, I don't pick them up, because I don't think they should get to take up any more of my time.

I'm the latest victim of 800-316-4342.  Never had a subscription to LA TIMES in over 10+ years.  Started receiving these annoying calls informing me of a "past due account".  Really?!  $37.14 Past due.  When I asked them for the delivery/ billing address, they gave me an address somewhere in Palmdale.  Too many red flags here.  I called the 1-800-528-4637 ext 73464 for help with these calls.  Was promised these calls would stop and several weeks later they still call atleast once or twice a day.  I program my phone with the 800-316-4342 as a contact and had the caller blocked.  This way, when a call comes through it will automatically go to VM.  POOF!

You may be interested in knowing that I was repeatedly contacted by
the LA Times due to an expired renewal. I refused to give them a
credit card # over the phone. After several calls they assured me that
they were the LA Times and gave me all of my info that only they should
have. I was convinced and gave them the Chase credit card number. That
was on 11/1/2012. Today I noticed two small test charges for less than
$1.00 showing up on my account and then two several hundred charges
that were attempted but rejected. I contacted Chase and the account
was closed as of today. I called the Times and the gal confirmed that
I had renewed the account yesterday. So the call was legit. I
therefore must assume the info was stolen. Bottom line: I conclude
that whoever took my credit card number from the LA Times yesterday
stole the number. I wonder how big this scam is? I contacted the Times
and no response.

OK GUYS I AM GOING TO LET YOU PEOPLE ON A LITTLE SECRET ABOUT THE LA TIMES BILLING DEPARTMENT # 1(800)316-4342. THEY ARE ACTUALLY A COLLECTION AGENCY CALLED CAINE AND WEINER THAT PRETENDS TO BE LA TIMES. I USED TO WORK THERE ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND I COMPLETELY DO UNDERSTAND WHY YOU GUYS ARE UPSET WITH THE "LA TIMES". THEY DO SCAM PEOPLE AND LIE TO THEM JUST SO THEY CAN HAVE YOUR ADDRESS AND PHONE # SO THEY KNOW HOW TO TRACK YOU DOWN AND CALL NONSTOP FOR A PAYMENT. ITS QUITE SICKENING.. AND IT IS ALWAYS AN ONGOING SUBSCRIPTION, NEVER A PRE PAY TYPE OF A THING. DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR AND STAY AWAY FROM LA TIMES. THEY LOVE TO LIE TO PEOPLE AND TAKE THEIR MONEY AWAY FROM THEM..THEN THEY GIVE YOUR ACCOUNT TO A COLLECTION AGENCY. IS LA TIMES STARTING TO SOUND BETTER OR WHAT??
smart.

I "use" to subscribe to the LA Times - for 1 year. When I got the bill to renew, I sent it and a short note back to them indicating I wasn't going to renew the subscription - because I simply wasn't interested in subscribing for another year...

Now these a-holes are calling every few weeks. I know it's them by the Caller ID display - seeing that I don't answer...

Another poster said something about Manila (Philippines) - that's likely where their Customer Service call center is located. There are a lot of those (call center's) located there...

If they call and you answer - get a police type whistle and blow is loudly into the phone! That will piss 'em off even more... (~LAUGHING~)

If it's a bill collection matter and you don't legitimately owe the amount - screw them! But if you did and you paid the bill and they're still harassing you - don't pay it just to get rid of them. But if you do indeed owe the amount, pay it...

A suggestion, forward the 1-800-316-4342 calls to their main business telephone number:

I absolutely love reading the L. A. Times, but I refuse to spend anymore money subscribing.  Their "customer service" (quotes intended) department is right out of the Three Stooges, by way of Dewey Cheatem and Howe.

They call and call and call and never leave a message, while blocking their own calling number when they have a legitimate reason to call.

They have screwed up my subscription account more times than I care to recall.

At least four times I subscribed to home delivery...then three weeks later, when no paper arrived, I had to call THEM, and that's when I learned "Oh, we don't deliver in your zip code."  Then tell your stupid salespeople that, OK?

When they sent a reminder that my $104 one-time annual bill was due, I called and got it straightened out to a monthly billing.  Five days later, they took $104 out of my account anyway.

And now they hire a fly-by-night collection agency.  Nice.
