Came home from work today and had an envelope with IMPORTANT PLEASE CALL with this number.   Tells me to have my account number ready, but doesn't say my account number with WHO.   None of my bills are overdue, and if any were, they would have their name on the notification.   Circular File.

I noticed an envelope on my door knob when coming back in from setting my throw rugs on the porch.  Envelope had a message folded inside the actual envelope.  I opened it and it had the date, This number and Please call..  Also had Spanish on it..    Did not give a company ect..   So I am not going to call..  Most smart people would not call a number given to them in this manner.

its a company called Safeguard Properties that leaves the envelopes at the door not the mortgage or bank themselves.Someone probably let the person in. Is there a security guard at the gate? If the person had an id the guard probably let him in.

Thanks for this information - I have the same mortgage company(s) as you and got the automated call yesterday from this 800 number.  I'm not calling them back but I figured it's because I always time my check to arrive on or around the 15th of the month as it usually takes me awhile to scrape up the money to pay it.  Either they are very slow processing it, or it's in combination with slow mail service, but it usually just makes it by the end of the grace period.  This month the 15th was on a Saturday so it may have messed up their collections (I got the robo call on Monday).

Yeah, I came home and found a really weird piece of paper affixed to my door.  In English and Spanish, saying Important, Please call, Please Refer to Your Loan Number.  I didn't know what it was, so I blocked the number on my phone and called - it was for "Mortgage Collection Services."  When I got a rep, I asked for what mortgage company, and she said PHH.  I told her what I found on my door knob, and she said, "I'd think they'd have a better way of reaching their customers than that," and I said I didn't have a loan or ANYTHING with PHH in the first place.  ODD.

Event Reminder
This is a real company. "Mortgage Service Center". They are a company that manages mortgages for many banking and loan companies. For me it is "PHH Mortgage" through USAA Federal Saving Bank. I received an automated message to call the 800 number. Like you I did not recognize the company's name or the caller ID 215-600-4484. But with a quick search and the information found here I realized I better call this number. As it turns out they were calling to remind me that I needed to make my payment before the 15th to avoid any late fees. I had a nice conversation with the operator and was reassured that were was no problem with my mortgage and or payments. In all honesty, I have been paying my mortgage on the 15th forever. I forgotten that the payment was due on the 1st and that 15th was the last day of grace. Maybe I'll start paying by the 10th. Just to make sure the payment is not late.

People saying that they don't even have a mortgage-- check to make sure your landlord is making mortgage payments.

We received this several times, and also thinking it was a scam did nothing.  Lo and behold, our landlord had been pocketing our rent money and the house was going into foreclosure.  It's not a scam.

As aforementioned these people are hired to drive around, take a couple of pictures of the home and leave said envelope/letter.  Mainly also done for an occupancy/vacancy check and a lot have to be done to make any type of payment be "worthwhile."

Usually these are done for:

a)  You are behind/delinquent on your payments (though these days even things in the so-called "grace period" can trigger these inspections even if attempting a short sale/home sale.

b)  Possible re-finance; checking to see if your home is occupied.

c)  They got the wrong name/address in the records ("don't shoot the messenger" - they just get the orders)

d)  Who knows?  (It's really a way to get you to call in)

---
Keep tabs on your statements, as these are charged as some type of fee.  "No soliciting" or not they are to be left if feasible to do so.  These hits are done pretty much every month too until things are settled.

Before you complain, there IS a clause in your mortgage documentation indicating inspections can be done.  Wait you didn't read anything when you bought the home?  Well, shame on you...

Many mortgage companies use Safeguard (and other companies) to deliver the phone number of folks lender. This is an attempt to get the home owner to make a payment or find out what is up. This is a case of 'Don't kill the messenger."

This just happen to me also. When we called the number whoever was on the other end did not know what it was about and gave us no information what so ever. The name of the mortgage company on the note is not the name of the company we have our mortgage with. Something is not right here.

There is no soliciting in my gated community, how did they get in? Definite scam...I am a victim of theft, and identity theft...so be weary...sending envelope and tape to forensic for finger printing, and giving to a detective friend...this has to stop!

We also had some seriously sketchy guy deliver this to our house and leave it on the door knob.  If they were legit, you would expect them to have their name on the envelope.  The fact that neighbors have seen this guy driving around and backing out of driveways with dogs...makes you wonder.  This guy is also taking photos of the houses... Serious creep factor!

We just had a man knock on our door, say he had a delivery with our last name, and hand us the little manilla envelope with the vague notice with this number. Checked here first. We do have PHH but it seems like a scam! Why wouldn't their name be on it??

Here is an update from the last message (the one above this):

We called our mortgage lender, and lo and behold PHH handles our mortgage lender's payment processing.  Yuck!  Our payment amount was set to change on March first.  We pay biweekly, and we were set to pay an extra few dollars.

We do not understand, though, why we have been receiving "delinquency" phone calls when we are not yet delinquent.  One would think from the tone of the jagaloon whom I spoke with that we were three months behind.

I decided to take the last call yesterday and wait through it until I could talk to someone about this.  The phone call was automatic, and I ended up being on the phone with a computer asking me personal information.  Remember that this company's phone caller ID does not properly acknowledge its identity.  I could have been on the phone with anyone.  As I just sat on the phone, being asked personal information by a computer, I inputted nothing, instead waiting for the customer service rep that I was supposedly going to find at the end of the process.

Nope.  When I would not punch in any personal information, I received the message "Thank you for calling, but we cannot process your information.  Good bye."

They called me, but I received this message?  No real person on the other end of the phone?  No wonder PHH has been sued repeatedly, and that their BBB record kind of stinks.  If you do research on PHH Mortgage, you will find that they have actually told people not to make payments, and then they take the home.  Even in cases that someone chooses to make payments on his mortgage, PHH has still tried to complete foreclosure.  Please, if you receive phone calls from these people, call your mortgage lender, make sure this company is not affiliated with your loan, and then if you feel like you are in danger of being screwed over call the New Jersey Attorney General.  From what I have found, this company's record is so bad that you may find some help in this manner.  Document everything.

We have yet to even be delinquent, we have reset our payments amounts so that we will not have missed a single dollar of our payment, and we are still being harassed.  It really is scary, isn't it?

I just got off the phone with "Mike" from PHH.  I have been receiving phone calls from this number, but the messages are very weird.  Some of them are automated responses as if I was calling them.

Mike wanted my information, and I would not give it to him because I have received no mentioning in the mail of a problem.  Also, we do not use PHH.  This being so, Mike told me to call back when I had contacted my mortgage people.

We did, and our mortgage company rep said that our account was paid, but, yes, PHH takes care of our payments.  I did not know this.  "What could cause this company to call us?" I asked our rep, and his answer was that if our escrow information or payment has changed that there is a possibility that two or three dollars can cause a delinquent notice on our account.

Here are my issues:

1.  We have received no notice in the mail that this is happening.

2.  PHH should have all of our information is this is credible.

3.  PHH recently lost lawsuit with a soldier who has USAA mortgage (like we do).  This PHH company told creditors everywhere this soldier had bad credit, and the soldier won a twenty-one million dollar lawsuit from them.  I do not want to even get into bed with these people if this is their business practice.

My advice to anyone receiving these phone calls who has a mortgage is to call your mortgage lender, find out if PHH handles your payments, and then double-check to see if your escrow or payments have been risen and you have not been notified.  While this company seems to have poor business practices -- as I have found on Internetz -- there might be a real reason they are calling you.  And, most importantly, CHECK YOUR CREDIT RATING.  If this company reports you, and you have been falsely reported, you can take action, and you should.

One last note:  I find it weird that this company would not have themselves represented as "PHH Mortgage" on their caller ID listing.  When we receive calls from any other company that is credible the name tells us who it is; we do not receive ambiguous names from companies that we have had good dealings with.  Why do some companies do this?

Best wishes to all of you!

Just like several of the folks above, today I found a brown envelope on my front door. It was a generic envelope and when I opened it...it had today's date, "Mortgage Co." and a number for me to call 800-330-0423. Instead of calling, I looked it up here first. I'm paid up...don't know why I'm getting this.

they left a note in a sealed (unmailed) envelope at my door with their phone number inside stating that it was important and they were expecting my call today. it said to have my account number ready but they didn't leave an account number. needless to say, it all sounded fishy (and a little scary) and i never even called in the first place.

We don't have a mortgage, and someone showed up at our property on a Sunday evening at 6:30 P. M. to tape a plain white envelope to our door. (Long weekend and we were not there - a neighbor noticed and let us know.) The insert said, "URGENT! Please call your mortgage company!" Then listed a client and invoice number. The message had no letterhead, the envelope no return address.
When I called they said the invoice number was not valid. When my husband called they asked for his social security number.
I don't care with whom they claim to be associated, they certainly appear to be scam artists to me.

these people just drove into our driveway, got out, left a piece of paper on our patio furniture with this phone number and left.  They never knocked on the door... I was standing in my kitchen and watched the lady get out and leave it.  I call the number and they want an account # or ss #????  Are they serious?  I could print things and put on people's doors and have them call me and freely give me their ss#
Yeah RIGHT!   We don't even have a mortgage.

They are from PHH and Merril Lynch. Personally, since I don't hold a mortgage with either of these companies and they want my loan numbers or social security number, I think they are just using the terror tactic of a collection agency to get my personal information.

Got a message on my voicemail to call this number regarding my mortgage. I am in China and the FDIC took over my bank during my absence so I thought it could be legit. When I called the number an automated voice asks for my loan/account number or SS#. Since they do not identify themselves and I am current on my mortgage, this strikes me as very odd. I would be very cautious.

They keep calling and calling, looking for people who had my phone number before. I have kindly told them I have no idea who those folks are and that we just took over the phone number in September, 2010. It is some sort of "mortgage" type company, I'm not sure if it's a scam or not as they aren't looking for me.  I did get through after calling the number back and spoke to a kind lady who said they would stop calling, well apparently that didn't work, they still call.

I paid our first mortgage payment about 10 days before it was due and it for some reason got applied to principle instead of a monthly payment.  About 30 days later I get a call from this number so I call back afraid that some how our electronic payment hadn't gone through.  A 5 minute phone call cleared it up and I got no late fees or charges.

Keep getting calls on my cell from this number. Looking for a person (not me).  I tried to hang on and tell them, but they said no operators were available.

Given the comment above that says they are asking for your social, this sure sounds like a scam!
