Actually they announced about 4 or so years ago that cell phone numbers would be released to telemarketers like land lines have always been.  So that is no longer the case.

I also received a call from 800-374-4637 and they left a message they were calling from the business office of Atlanta Medical Center in reference to an application for assistance, which I did not do.  So I called the number back and said " thank you for calling the business office and that you are on a recorded line. How may I help you"  She was not expecting that and she said I called them.  I told her you called first...so what can I help you with. Yes she hung up.

I recently was seen in a local Hospital Emergency Room.  I have no insurance, so I believe they are receiving a list from the Hospitals themselves, of people who can not afford to pay for their hospital visit.  SCAM!

This is a medical eligibility program call center employed by your local hospital.  I received a call from them and I need to call them back.  I had received a call from them a year and a half ago, but I called my local hospital back directly and, because I?m a poor college kid, they covered all my medical bills and I was left with a $5 co-pay (see CICP).  Talk about awesome.  Stop throwing a fit about them because they won?t give out personal information.  That is called following HIPAA and PSQIA, see government website http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/index.html, and be glad they won?t give out any medically identifiable information about you.  So you have two choices, talk to the person at the 800 number or call your local hospital.  Not doing either is only going to hurt you in the long run.  The medical assistance is there for a reason, might as well take advantage of it.

Received a call tonight from these people - same message - Medical Eligibility Program. Here's the issue- I'm waiting to get approved for major surgery. This was not a good call to get and go into panic over. These people need to be reigned in.

I got a call in the morning, i took the time to see what they wanted and found out they worked for a hospital near my house. I went to the ER in January and they wanted to see if I had insurance. I said no so they asked a few questions to see if I qualified for some programs. I didnt because i dont have kids or SSI. Then they just tranfered me to some other line to see about paying my bill in monthly payments.

I received the call from the "Medical Eligibility Counseling Service". They said they were calling about services received at a local hospital (I've deliberately omitted the name). They said they wanted my date of birth for security purposes. I said you should have that information and I don't give that out to people I don't know. If they told me what my date of birth was, I could confirm it. The woman thanked me for my time and hung up.

got a call on my cell phone a recording saying it was a business call and to hold for the message.  Just so happens I was waiting on a followup call from a national company and I mistakenly thought this was the call I was expecting.  I held 2 minutes on my cell phone and hung up thinking - what company calls and them immediately puts the callee on hold?  So I looked it up and found these other instances.
I have been getting calls on my landline asking for my brother with a recorded message about medical assistance or medical eligibility.  I hang up because my brother doesn't live here, never has, not even same last name - but he did receive emergency medical care while travelling in NC recently and he does not have insurance.
just one more thing to deal with

same as several above--received out of the blue call (which I did not take) and then phone message from person saying it was from the Medical Eligibility Counseling Services of the Business Office and asking me to call. It's too bad there is not a way to punch a button to block these people.

We talked with the local hospital and confirmed that this organization is associated with them indirectly.
And either A.) the hospital screwed up the records or B.) someone is trying to use her identity....

it sounds like the call center could use some better soft skills to help explain who and what they are....

So.. my gf just receieved a similar call from this number and they were offering to help with a bill from a local hospital sometime this month.
There are several problems here..
1.) She has not been to the hospital recently -  I believe it was a reported ER visit
2.) She had not even been to a doctor in over 2 months.
3.) She had insurance at the time.

She did not reallize the date that they said at first and thought it was referring to the original visit to her regular doctor etc.
They also asked what number was called and she provided that information.
She then was asked what address she lived at etc.
She provided this as well (again assuming this was legit).
They then informed her that it looks like perhaps her identity was stolen because someone with her information was that that hospital ER.

2 seconds after the call, she realized that the call itself might be an attempt at id theft and she called me.
I looked up the number and found this site.
I also found this one:

http://www.creighton.edu/fileadmin/user/doit/ ... vePhoneBook.pdf
which has this very same number posted:
Medical Eligibility Program (MEP) ...................... 1-800-374-4637

This is a Jesuit University that is apparently out of Nebraska...
I called the number from my work phone and talked with a lady who said that yes they are associated with the university and that they are the call center.
However, they are based out of Texas.
Basically I asked all the questions and then when I explained that we had a bizarre call from this number,
she immediately asked what number did I receive the call on.   I declined to provide any further information and explained that the call appeared to be in error and hung up.
There still seems like something fishy here.....

I keep receiveng calls from this number as well. Day and night!!! I was recently hospitalized as well and they have my info!! How?? I never provided these people with my info. Do you think maybe the hospitals are providing confidential information?? We should report these people! They just called me again today and I pretended to be a male (voice)so they apologized and hung up. Hoopefully they will erase my number now!! There is something fishy going on here.... I have to search more on this company/business.

Received a voicemail from this number; message stated it was from the "Medical Eligibility Counseling Services of Business Office". No idea what it was about; I called back right before I found this information about this number online so I hung up immediately before someone answered my call. I am on the Do-Not-Call list already, and I thought it was ILLEGAL for solicitation calls to be made to my cell phone?!!!!

The called my [unlisted, pay-as-you go 'GoPhone] cellphone number, I did not pick up and they did not leave a voice mail message. I then called from work [I'm a State Investigator] and enabled my 'no caller ID' option. I asked if they routinely make unsolicited phone calls. They stated they were calling from 'the hospital' billing department. When I asked 'What hospital' they stated they needed to check their records regarding that [my] phone number. I lied to them about the call coming to my Work phone [which they can Not trace or ID] because I did not need them to know my cellphone number. The woman [no accent] came back ans stated she could tell not to ask me any identifying information and their records showed their phone call to be a mistake, apologized, and hung up.
Folks, these phone numbers and calling practices need to be reported to your State Attorney General's office, Consumer Protection Division. You can contact them online [it couldn't be easier]. They may not act right away, but we are building a record of activity that may eventually be used against them. Remember, if other people had acted, You would not now be receiving these types of calls. Good Luck.

My nephew recently received hospital emergency treatment in Westminster co.  A few days later he got a letter from 1-800-374-4637, offering to help him in paying for the visit.  He has no insurance/money/not much of a job/can't pay.  When he called the number they asked if he had medicaid.  He said no.  They got disinterested fast.  The "help" letter looks legitimate but contains no signature, and a woman with a heavy hispanic accent was the "patient advocate" but the address is in Birmingham Al.  I am southern.  Hispanic accents are not common in Birmingham Al. I suspect this is a medicaid scam.  Beware.

They called and the recording said to hold that it was a business matter, and not a solicitation.  Then they hung up.  If I get a bill for something, I'll know what the heck it is
