Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

Too bad the number on the site is not the one on this thread A-Hole.

You're a 2-bt con artist - nobody reading your BS believes this number is real.  Nobody would keep coming here to post that the number is "real".

Again, this number is legitimate. The RBC website lists it. The automated service does not ask for any details - it just told me that I had used my card at a store/location that was under investigation for card copying and that I was to go to my local RBC branch to get a replacement. Simple as that.

Its a scam guys!

For all the idiots that call this number back and give away their credit card number you've been scammed. Try pulling out RBC's number from their website and contact the security department

Nothing to fear. This is a legitimate Royal Bank security division telephone number.

**You will get an automated voice response if you call this number**

If you prefer, you can go to your bank branch in person which is most likely what they'll tell you to do.

The number is legit.....omg look on rbc's website and it mentions the number and protocol for these calls. Basically your card might have been used at a location that is under investigation, go to you bank, change your pin and get a new card...simple. Don't give any info over the phone...unless you call them. oh, and stop writing false info....someone could get hurt or ripped off

I recieved a Voicemail.

The call is from RBC Security Deoartment for "my name" with account ending in "XXXX" should call this number 800 399 2697, "this is not a telemarketer".

BS.  I called Royal Bank from thier general KNOWN number, and asked what was wrong with my account.  they claimed nothing was wrong, i told them i had recieved a vociemail from this number.  They then called it, and said they claim to be royal bank, but I don't have any information on them.  Its good that you called.  If you have any further problems, go to your branch.

They pretty much said it was fradulent.  AND this number is no where on thier website.  And thier is no ROYALBANK SECURITY DEPARTMENT.

I got a phone call from the number above. It was an automated message asking me to call back to that number. I was suspicious because of all the fraud you hear going around so I called RBC using the number on the back of my Client Card. I spoke to a rep who said my account looked fine, nothing was flagged. To be sure everything was okay, she called the number who had originally called me.. It was in fact the Security Department. They had compromised my card due to suspicious activity. The rep suggested I go into a bank a get a new temp card and change my PIN. She was going to send a new Client Card out to me but noticed the Security Department had already done that for me. This number is definitely legit, but to be safe I would still recommend calling the main RBC number when looking into it

This is a legit call. If you call them back, they will not ask you for anything, simply will tell you to go to the bank and change your client card for some security reasons. Call this number, or at least call your bank to make sure.

WHOEVER SAID THIS IS A SCAM SHOULD CHECK THEIR FACTS FIRST. I just checked RBC's site to see. And yes, they do leave messages in the time-sensitive matter of your client card. You said the bank "should never call you about this sort of thing"... excuse me, but I know from first hand experience that they do, what else can they do? They don't ask for any numbers other than the tel. number they used to contact you.
This number IS listed as the Royal Banks Security Department. Someone said there was no such dept., but that is ridiculous. I worked for RBC. I've had my card comprimised and been called. Both of my kids have.
It's always wise to check the number out, but don't ignore it. Call the customer service number listed on the back of your client card if unsure.

Got the call this morning. It's legit, confirmed by the bank.

Did this job in the past for another institution, all banks do the same thing : monitoring transactions on cards and investigating machines. We were live people, but we knew some other banks were automated.

Please don't listen to the idiot above.  It is an automated system from RBC's Security Department.  They will call all numbers that you have on file wit them to explain that there has been a breach of security as pertaining to your client card.  Most of these calls are due to using your card in a vendor's machine that is being investigated for cloning or other fraudulent activities.  All you need to provide is the phone number that they have called and left the message, as well as verify your name (press 1 if you are "YOUR NAME").

Legit RBC Security Department Number, Requires immediate action, if you get this automated call mean your bank account has been compromised. Call it back on the same phone, empty or transfer any remaining money out of your related accounts, then run to your bank as fast as you can. I lost $1000 stolen from debit card scam, bank is investigating... merry christmas 2009.

Had the missed call from that number today. I called RBC directly and the rep told me it is a legitimate number from the RBC security division. I had her check my card, and apparently it wasn't canceled but flagged as the card was compromised, meaning it may have been copied, or as a precautionary measure. I work in security so I know there are agents in front of screens 24/7 monitoring txns, alerts and do call immediately for any suspicious activity big or small. I'll be going to the branch tomorrow to get a new card.

Weird call though, made me nervous, but good to know we have ppl looking over. There shld be a better method of calling client though

For safety always call your branch or RBC directly.

Or... you can try checking under RBC's security section of their site where they specifically address this.  Taken from RBC's website:
http://www.rbc.com/privacysecurity/ca/alert-automated-call-faq.html

Q1: I received an automated call and I?m not sure that it is a legitimate.  It?s from the ?RBC Security Department.?

A: To contact clients most efficiently, RBC is now using an automated technology solution to quickly advise clients of any security issues with their Client Card.

   * We will not ask you to provide any confidential information during this call, either verbally or by pressing any telephone buttons. If you are asked for any information, discontinue the call immediately and contact us.
   * We will tell you that we are calling from RBC Security Department
   * Our number will be displayed as 1-800-399-2697
   * We will reference the last 4 digits of your Client Card number; if you are unsure, please verify this independently.
   * We will tell you that this is not a telemarketing call
   * This is a one-way delivery of information, from RBC to you.
   * Again, we will not ask you to provide any personal information during this call.
   * If we did not connect with you, we will leave you a voicemail to call back our 1-800# to retrieve your full message details.
Q2: I tried to call the number that was left and it was not RBC.

A: The correct phone number for these calls is 1- 800-399-2697.  If you believe that you have provided information to someone other than RBC, please contact us immediately.

Q3: Why am I being contacted by an automated system rather than a live person?

A: Our goal is to ensure that we connect with our clients as quickly as possible in order to minimize any impact or inconvenience this may cause.

Q4: I am still able to use my Client Card, so why did I receive this call?

A: Your card has been identified as requiring replacement.  To ensure we don?t impact your card use, your Client Card has not been restricted, but you must go into your nearest branch to obtain a replacement Client Card and change your PIN for your protection.

You are not asked to give away your credit card number, as "Commonsense" seems to think has happened.

Got an automated call from 800 399 2697 saying it was RBC Security, it asked me to press one if they had my name right (which they did).  So I pressed 1 and it said my client card had been compromised and I should go to a branch and get another card.  Checked it out with RBC on the phone, and it seems legit.  They never asked for any info, so it doesn't seem like a scam.

I received a message and was told to call this number about my client card.  It was busy but I was then referred to another number (416-640-2444) which says it's a company called Risk Check (also, no response).  I checked their website and they seem legit but they're an environmental risk assessment company.
