Got a call tonight from the number.  They started by saying they were the fraud division of AX but then asked me to provide my social security number and when I wouldn't, then said I could just provide my full address instead.  I refused to provide either.  I hung up and called AX directly.  They told me it was a fraudulent call and that they whoever it was, was trying to steal my identity.

Caller ID=unknown. The Nigerian male voice said he's calling from Amex to confirm my application for Costco Amex. He asked me to verify my address & ss#.  He said he can't give me any info until I confirm my info.  I did not apply for any cards.  This is fraud!

I have to agree with PHIL, this number is a Phishing Scam...et.al, a telemarketer located in India.  Got approved yesterday from a different phone number located in Wisconsin after speaking to an older woman in her 50's located in a different state and not another country, from American Express.

Waiting for the new card.  This young girl at this phone number is only a 26 year old and located in India. We spoke about the new miss America....the first time in American History that an American Indian woman was chosen as Miss America.  The poor kid filed a complaint on National Television, because she got more than 7,000 threats from Twitter, as she won... she must have been flamed verbally by over 7,000 Miss American viewers who weren't happy about something.

So, I just spent 3 hours chasing this mess....turns out it IS legitimate. If you have questions, go straight to the AMEX fraud department. This is the AMEX East Indian Call Center. They are responsible for verifying any and all changes to an existing or new account.
not happy with the way I didn't get the info right away...

Got a call last night ostensibly from American Express.  Called the number and found it was a "free luxurious cruise to the Bahamas..."  No identification as being an Amex entity, no identification as to the ownership of the called number.

DEFINITIVE ANSWER: THIS NUMBER IS LEGITIMATE.

Here's the link on the AmEx page directly referencing this number:

https://search.americanexpress.com/app/answers/list/search/1/kw/567-1083

It totally seemed sketchy when a message was left for me a week or so after getting my Delta AmEx card (since it had already been activated and used), so I looked it up myself (which is how I wound up here) but accents and phish-suspicions aside, it's for real.

This is completely bogus.  We got a call from this number.  Dude had a heavy indian accent.  Then called the 800 number back and some lady was speaking french on the voicemail.  Then we called the AMEX number on my card, and the real AMEX people said there was no record of any call to us, and that there would be no reason for any call to us.  We opened our Costco AMEX over a year ago, so it had nothing to do with opening a new account.  I wouldn't call these people back.  Big scam...  They must have gotten our numbers illegally somehow.  Here phishy, phishy, phishy...

This is legitimate.

I applied for a business card recently, and they called the following day saying they needed to verify my physical address. After a few questions the woman asked for my debit card number so that we could call the bank and verify my address with them. I thought that sounded like a bit much to ask. I told her I would have to call them back and was provided with the 800-567-1083 number.

I called back on an alternate line with which I had applied for the card, and I was directed to the New Accounts department who confirmed that they did need to verify the address, that they had made the outbound call and that occasionally they will ask for the debit card number when using a bank to verify information. The operator and I called the bank and verified the address together. He did not make me give any debit card information and simply had the bank verify my identity through their own methods.

Call from AmEx new card services, to verify my application information. In my case, it was a Costco AmEx card. Verified it as actually from AmEx.

I received a message from 800-567-1083 saying they were calling from American Express and needed to discuss a "personal matter."  I called the number and the representative requested my SSN & DOB over the phone.  I did not provide it.

I then called the number on the back of my existing American Express card, and was told there were no "notes" on my account or security concerns.  The Amex representative told me I was correct to not reveal my SSN or DOB over the phone.

I see many mentions of Costco on previous posts.  I joined 2 weeks ago.  I wonder if Costco has security issues with our application information????

I received VM from AMEX at 800-567-1083.  I called and they asked for SSN.  I hung up and called number on the back of my amex card.  Amex verified it was a good number and one which is used when people sign up for new cards or additional cards

WARNING!!!!!

This is a phishing scam.  American Express verified that this is not legit!!!!  I ordered two AMEX corporate cards through my company, received the cards and activated and used.  I got a call from an Indian saying that he needed to verify some information and he was trying to get my SS number, home address etc.. He couldn't confirm the dates, number of cards that I have or anything.  Don't give any information to these people.  I immediately enrolled in Lifelock just to cover myself.

It's real - not fake.

I just got the call right now from a woman who had my name, and asked me to verify my identity with the last 4 digits of my SSN and the address I applied for the card with.  The address I gave when I applied was my new one, and I haven't officially changed it yet, so they were calling to confirm that this actually is my address (since it doesn't match up with what's in the system) and said I could do so via a bank statement sent to my current address, via a CPA, or they could call the bank and talk with the bank to confirm.  Afterwards, I was given this number to call back, but decided to confirm with AmEx first.

I just called the AmEx number I was given when I applied for the card at Costco, and asked if this number was real.  The man I spoke with (who must be an AmEx rep as I don't think Costco gives out fake numbers) said that this number IS one of the numbers they provide for customers to call back.  I also double checked the ways in which I can confirm an address with them, and he said all the same ways the woman had.

It's legit.

I received a message from a lady with a strong english/indian accent saying something about AmEx.  I could not understand her message.  Since I'm already an AmEx card holder I was concerned there was an issue with my card.  I called 800-567-1083 and spoke with the same lady that left the message.  She asked for my name and said there was a new card application in my name.  Said she would need my last four of my SS to verify my identity.  I said I was not comfortable giving this info and she seemed irratated and kept on insisting on my last 4 to help me.  I hung up and I called the AmEx number on the back of my card and she did verify that the 800-567-1083 was a number for new card services at AmEx.  I just received a new Costco card so I suspect they also try to sign you up with an AmEx card.

i got a call at work from a "sweet" lady who said that she was with american express (which i had just applied for a card) and, in order to continue my application process, they needed my birthdate and social security #.  i said i didn't feel comfortable giving that out, so she told me to call 1-800-567-1083.  instead, i googled the number and found this site.  i then went to americanexpress.com and called them and they said it was NOT them and that they NEVER ask for that info.
this is TOTALLY a scam!

This is a verified number with american express. As you can see from other postings. You are able to bypass putting in your SSN and speak with a live person who is able to use other things to confirm the caller.

This is completely legitimate.  I applied for an American Express business card through their secure site at americanexpress.com, and two days later received this phone call.  Upon calling them back and providing them with my social security number and date of birth, they had all information that I had provided on the American Express site, and sent me my new credit card in the mail, for the exact credit amount that they had stated on the phone.

Called asking me to confirm information for an amex application, and could provide when I applied for a card(seems ligit).  But still seemed fishy, I called the number on amex's site and found someone to talk to this way instead.  The service rep didn't know about this number, or the ID i was given by the original service rep.  I don't know if this is just a case of amex not knowing whats going on within their company, or whether it was actually a phishing scam.
