Debt Collector
800-596-4047
"the message said CVCS" which a google search pulled up Coachella Valley Collections. Bankrupted a year ago, have no idea who I could possibly owe money to since I have no debt now.

I'm pretty sure this is a bogus scam, disguising as a debt collector.  I don't owe money to anyone, and they called on a phone line that I never use (so none of my billers would have the number). Since I have no outstanding bills (and no late notices, or old unpaid debts), it is highly unlikely that there is some estranged account that I forgot about. I received a message from this number saying "Hi, this is an important message for [me] from CBCS... This is a debt collector attempting to collect a debt. Any information obtained will be used for that purpose. Please return the call at 1-800-596-4047. ....you're reference number 1884...".   When I called the number back, I got a recording saying that there were "no agents available right now...leave a message..name...phone number...", then I got dumped to another recording that said I could not leave a message because the user's mailbox was FULL.  I've never had to contact a debt collector for any reason, but if I DID, it would seem odd that there wouldn't be anyone available to take my call. I would think debt collectors would WANT to take calls from people owing money!!  Further, the recording on their end does not identify them as a debt collector. I'm not going to try to call them again. This is not the first time something like this has happened...though I am curious exactly WHAT the scam is....

this is a collection agency (named CACS) that looks up old addresses of people who owe money and then calls the numbers of any cell phones that use that as a billing address.  for example, the former owner of my house had a roommate that owed money, and the collection agency started calling my cell phone after I bought the house.

I just received a call from 904-772-2265, which I did not answer. A few minutes later my cell told me I had a message. When I retrieved it i heard:
"This message is for (name of person). If you are not (name), please discontinue listening. <Pause> By continuing this message you acknowledge that you are (name). This is (unintelligible) with an important message for (name). This is an attempt to collect a debt. Please call 1-800-596-4047 and reference number (blah, blah, blah, blah)"

Obviously a wrong number. I don't know the person they are trying to reach.  Strange that they should call my cell.....I've had it for about 3 years.

CRS is now CBCS a collection agency since 2008.  This company buys old "junk" debt, for as little as 5-10 cents on the dollar, in attempt to collect a portion of the amount owed.  The accounts are never going to be recent, but usually several years old.

You should ask for validation of the account, but this must be done in writing (use return receipt requested).  They will not provide it with just a phone request.  Normally they cannot provide as they are not the original account holder or even the second or third.  If they fail to provide it you can use that information to dispute it on your credit report.  Rest assured that if they are calling for you then they have reported it to the credit bureau.

If it is a wrong number, and I know this is a pain but the calls can be worse, send a cease communication letter to them (again with return receipt).  This should end the calls as they now cannot by law contact by phone.  This can also work if you do owe a debt, but it only stops the calls not the collection efforts.

Hopes this helps someone.

They called my parents looking for me, when I called they wouldn't tell me who they were or what they were about.  I wouldn't give them any information about me or the number they called, so they wouldn't tell me who they were or what they did.

They identified themselves only as "CBCS, we handle a lot of different services, that's why I need to know what number we called so I can tell you why we called".

I hung up without giving them any information.

Debt Collector
I have gotten a few calls on my cell phone in the last few months (usually a different collection agency) for same "account". They know my SS#, Address, etc. They even gave me the credit card number that I supposedly owe on. I have repeatedly asked for something in writing, they always say they have mailed letters...no they haven't because I want this taken care of. Also, they say this debt is from November, 2007. Like I would remember that far back anyway.

I got a voicemail that said
"this message is for brandy K mandy a b slash b, brandy K mandy a b slash b"
then it just started saying a bunch of random numbers, sounded like a phone # at first, but it was like 20 sigits

quite hillarious

They've been calling for months.  I've written them to say they have the wrong number because I have no debt in collection.  They are CBCS (a collection agency).  Here are two of their addresses:

CBCS Companies, Inc.
236 E. Town Street
Columbus, OH 43215
(614) 222-5500

CBCS Companies, Inc.
PO Box 1810
Columbus, OH  43231

The message left on my ans. machine was to call "Jill" at 877-334-4763,
but that number is also on the same type of webpage as this one (i.e.,
complaints).

have gotten several calls from this number leaving a message for someone who is not me.  I did speak to a live person about a week ago and told them they had the wrong number for this person.  I was assured the calls would stop, but they haven't.

must of rec'd a call when out of service, was alerted to a voicemail...checked it to find nothing but a "blip" of voice..maybe part of my first name...i dunno....i don't owe money...so i don't know why any collection agency would be calling me.

its getting annoying how many companies can waste our cellular minutes with BS calls.

I got a call & heard some type of recording shouting ''04'' (creepy) I don't owe money. i called back & she thanked me for calling but she was eating so I couldn't  make out what she said.  I hung up. if they are that laid back I don't trust it. I heard they (companys) change their names to avoid getting too many complaints about them.....is that true?

Unfortunately, debt collectors are exempt from the federal Do-Not-Call regulations.  However, you can file FDCPA complaints with the Federal Trade Commission here:  https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01  You can also file a complaint with with your state's attorney general, the address for whom is at www.naag.org

Check out these websites for more information on protecting yourself against sleazy debt collectors and, if need be, suing them:

I called 800-596-4047, but this time they called themselves CBCS. They gave a different mailing address: P.O. Box 11598 Jacksonville, Fla 32239. They've been calling for some time, more than a week, but they said that they only called like 1 week. I'd like to make some sort of complaint. My number is on the "do not call list". I filed an complaint against 'em, I'm not sure what if that it'll do anything, but if anyone has any ideas; please speak up!

Called the number listed & of course was put on terminal hold for over 10 minutes. when I got back to the "Voice mail box of ext. whatever"I left a 2 minute msg which was a repeat of "Consider this to be my legal notification that you rnumber is not to call this number again and gave my number." Since we do not outstanding debts, I just wonder who they're looking for-I guess we will see what happens.

Debt Collector
My phone disconnected before I could hear an operator.  I called it back and a recording says "Thank you for calling CRS..."  I pressed 0 for an operator and she would not tell me what type of company this was.  I stated that I was calling for a friend as I am 99% sure this is a collection agency.  The way the rep was acting made that 100%

I googled CRS and there are collection agencies that use that acronym (Credit Recovery Systems).

So overall, I would say it is a collection agency.  I will keep this updated if I can uncover anything else.
