"This is something you must all know: Environment California IS the same organization as "The Fund for the Public Interest" (formerly known as The Fund for Public Interest Research).

While Sierra Club and HRC are separate organizations from The Fund, the scam groups such as Environment California, CalPirg, along with dozens of other State Environment and PIRG groups, all fall under The Fund umbrella. That means that donors are getting scammed at more than one angle. Their name isn't even going on the donor list of a legitimate organization. Environment California doesn't spend a dime on the issues and has only one lobbyist registered with the State of California, Dan Jacobson, whose job it is to make appointments with wealthy donors in their homes so he can convince them to put Environment California in their wills or make even larger contributions. The entire organization is a joke and they rely on the one measly photo-op with the governor a year in order to look legitimate.

Doug Phelps is executive director of The Fund for the Public Interest (guilty of numerous labor violations and recently forced to settle a class action lawsuit for $2.5 million for FAILING TO PAY MINIMUM WAGE) and is also the owner and president of Grassroots Inc, another canvassing operation that fundraises for so-called progressive groups. As if that isn't bad enough, Doug also owns Telefund, a telephone canvassing operation that does the same thing.

Everything with Doug Phelps' name attached to it is criminal and fraudulent.

Do not ever work or donate money to these . . . .

Pretty sure this is related to the CalPIRG donation I made. Somewhat annoying but I don't answer, especially since they call after 9pm.

That's just rude - just call back the number and choose to be removed from the list. The people calling you are just regular people like you who have a job. You have NO obligation to ever answer the phone when someone calls.
PS - I am also annoyed by their calls, but there's no point in being obscenely rude.

This is the Fund for the Public Interest. They raise money for some really great causes to which I regularly give.

They're using an automated dialing program, so it's not really the person on the line who's responsible for the numbers called. And that's also why folks are not getting any messages.

If you don't want to hear from them, the best choice is to call them back, listen to the message, and press 1 to be taken off of the list. This is also great for the calling staff, because they don't spend time talking to someone who isn't interested.

If you don't think you've given to any of the groups they represent, they might have simply entered a phone number given to them by a member incorrectly--mistakes happen. See above for how to remove yourself from the list.

If your monthly donation has lapsed, they will probably call you more often because they assume that it's accidental and that you haven't noticed. A quick conversation should clear up any confusion if you've stopped giving on purpose.

And if you're like me, you will give them a little bit of money every time they call because they're good folks working for good causes.

We tell them we quit donating to  charities where the CEO and officers make more than we do. Except for  our small local church and homeless shelters, That pretty much means we have nobody left to give too.

We now only donate items of clothing, food , medical supplies and bedding,   even if we have to go out and buy used and new items.

oh, please. I have never donated or expressed interest in this group. I also did not "inherit" this number; I have had it for over 35 years. It is unlisted and unpublished.

They call my number constantly. They do not ask for me by name - they ask for my name and my address. I don't give out that info to strangers. I ask them to please stop calling, they say "ok" and call back the next day. I tell them I'm not interested in donating, they say "ok" and still call back the next day.

These are NOT "good folks".

I worked for a related group for a year.  The caller shifts end at 9PM so they won't call later than that unless you have a cell phone and are in a time zone they're not expecting.  They won't leave a message as they send physical mail and the point of calling is to speak with you.

To get off the list you need to take the call and tell them that.  If you aren't happy with the response you get, call the office (not the phone canvass staff) of Environment [state] or whatever group they were calling on behalf of (Human Rights campaign, Environmental Action, etc.).

They don't just call members of the general public so to get on the list you had to donate or express interest at some point (or inherited the phone # of someone who did!)

These are good folks so be nice : )

Does anyone know how to get them to stop calling?

I gave Environment Colorado $10 about 18 months ago, and I have literally been receiving calls every night since last December.  Answered once and the lady was simply rude and pushy. I will never give to them again, since they apparently have enough resources to badger people for long periods of time. Disappointing.  I would hope my donation went to something meaningful, not annoying.

Here's something interesting: I received a mysterious recorded saying that I need to call  back soon, that the matter was urgent. The number that I was given apparently was from some company that claims to be a debt recovery firm. I don't have any outstanding debts, so that's rather suspicious. Then I did *69, and what came back was the number under discussion here, which claims to be an environmental group. Even more suspicious.

They call at least once every single night. Sometimes "Public Interest"comes up, sometimes 'unknown'. I am fine with an organization I have supported in the past calling me every few months, but every night? If they think this is a good way to solicit donations, I think that I will inform every charity they work for that I will never contribute to them again.

Now that I read some of these comments, I have to agree it was some environmental non-profit or similar group, waiting outside the grocery store and noticing how cool I looked, so I might give them some cash, which I did as I sort of agree with what he was showing me. Must have put my actual number on there... so my own fault but they do like to call after 6pm on the cell, sucks.
