I always look up these no-name numbers when they call, but I never answer them.  It's always something I never asked for or wanted.  Telephones have been equipped with name and # display for about the past twenty five years. If a company who does its "business" via telephone can't put their name on there when they call, that's just plain stupid. Unknown Name? It's not unknown, it's just unwanted.

So glad I looked this up to see what it was.  I just called back and got the phone tree and entered my number into the system to be removed from the call list within 3 business days, or so they say.  I do donate to environmental and progressive non profits but seriously they call at least once a day, EVERY DAY, and I really don't recall giving any organization my cell phone number.  I work shift work and cannot afford to be bothered during "normal" hours.

This is an environmental group. They tried to get plastic grocery bags in California banned to help clean the ocean. I donated once. They used to use real people to make the calls but now it feels like a robocall or they use another group to do marketing.

I'd like to thank Jay very much for posting the email he sent to the Fund for Public Interest Research.  As you can see in my post below, I followed his lead (and in fact, used his email as a model) to send my own.  I encourage others to do the same, so that this message gets through to FFPII.

This organization has changed its name to the Fund for Public Interest, Inc. and provides no convenient contact information on their website for complaint email.  Because of this, I sent my email to David Wyman, listed as the Fund's Partnership Program Director.  I would suggest that others also use this address (dwyman@fundstaff.org) or send their complaints to the other (inappropriate) address that is listed.

Below is the email that I sent to FFPII:

Dear Mr. Wyman,
I am contacting you as your organization, Fund for Public Interest, Inc., does not supply an email address to which I may direct my complaint.  Please forward my message to the appropriate parties.  You may wish to review your organization's policy regarding contact information released to the public.  I, for one, am not about to spend any money sending your organization a letter or making a long-distance phone call in order to register my complaint.  I foresee that the email addresses your organization DOES supply will receive a number of emails like this one, which may become rather inconvenient for you.

I have been receiving phone calls from one of your 800 numbers. The caller neither leaves a message nor responds when I answer the phone you. You do your cause no credit with such phone calls.  In fact, they are on the verge of harassment.  Please see below my confirmation of my phone number being registered with the National Do Not Call list.  As I have not had any interactions with your organization within the past 90 days, you have absolutely no right to contact me under any solicitating pretense.  If you do continue to contact me, I will seek further actions.

It is my understanding that there are severe penalties for not adhering to the National Do Not Call list guidelines. Please review your phone solicitation policies, which may help you avoid unnecessary aggravations and fines.

Sincerely,
Phone number ending in **** and area code ***

National Do Not Call Registry Confirmation:

Your phone number with the last four digits **** was most recently registered in the National Do Not Call Registry on October 03, 2008. Most telemarketers will be required to stop calling you 31 days from your registration date.

-- to file a complaint

Print this email and keep it for your records.

If you answer the call, you can request to be placed on their do not call list.  As long as you don't answer, they will continue to call.

Understand - these call-for-hire groups keep most of the money they raise. The charities often go along with it because a little money is better than no money; but most charities realize their aggressive tactics end up hurting the charity, and opt out - however, so far as I know, that does not keep the group from continuing as if they represent that charity - they just stop giving the charity a few pennies out of each dollar they collect.

This Fund for the Public Interest calls almost every evening even though we're on the do not call list.  I finally picked up the phone and told them to stop calling, and that I considered their calls intrusive and a form of harassment.  The female caller's response was, "Lady, you're crazy".  This from a group that wants my money?!  They are a menace and an unpleasant one at that.

For clarification, "The Fund for the Public Interest" - the organization at the phone number 1-800-672-3014 - is a "fundraising for hire" company that works with, or raises funds for, various state PIRG's, environmental organizations, US PIRG, and so forth.  Basically, anyone who contracts with them to raise money for their cause/organization.  I speculate that this is why the person calling from "Fund Pub Inter" may not be aware of your membership in, or level of contribution to your specific organization.

I contributed to US PIRG in July of 2009.  The calls from this org. started two months later, asking for more money. I used their automated system at least three times to remove my number; to date it hasn't stopped the calls.  I believe their 'automated system' is either broken, ignored or a complete sham.  When you call the 800 number the caller ID lists, you have no option to talk to a real person.  You listen to their recorded message and are given one option to use their automated system to remove your number.  Being a charitable organization or fundraising on behalf of charities, it is my understanding that they are exempt from the Federal (and most State) Do Not Call registries.  However, they really ought to honor their own systems and not call people who request it.  Their refusal to leave me alone has cost US PIRG my monthly contributions.

I've only gotten two calls from them, and I haven't answered. I didn't know who they were, and I'm on the do not call list, so I didn't some research and found plenty of websites like this one. I just wanted to add myself to the list of people being harassed. I'm sure they'll pick up with the calls from what I read here.

If its FFPIR (the Fund for Public Interest Research), they are a legitimate environmental and consumer advocacy group and do some really good work - but its really unfortunate that they are using this tactic to try to raise money - its obnoxious and turns people off to their work.

Is there no organization that regulates 800/866 numbers?  I mean, can't we complain to SOMEONE that we're being harassed by these organizations who are fully taking advantage of their status of being exempt from the Do-Not-Call List?  We're being HARASSED, not just in volume but in hang ups.  SO FRIGGING FRUSTRATING!

lol OMG... I just googled this number and seen this page. I can't believe that these people are doing this. I belong to one charity and that is Environmental group of California. I think they are at fault for the constant calls I have been receiving from this group. I think all the charities united in giving out our numbers.

Has anyone answered there calls? If so, have they stopped calling? I'm tempted but scared...

Didn't notice how much these vultures had called until I just put the number in memory.  They've called 9 times in the last month, usually around the time of 8:36 pm.

I think it is some environmental group.  I (unfortunately) donated to Environment of California once, and they're notorious giving away phone numbers.

The next time they call, just answer and (assuming you get a person), tell them to stop calling you; remove your phone number from their call list.  If they start droning on like a broken record about whatever-the-heck their cause is, just interrupt them and repeat telling them not to call you.  Then hang up.  You're entitled to being blunt, since they're the ones that have been harassing people for so long.

If they call back, ask to speak with their supervisor, and repeat the above.
