You may want to turn these letters over to the local Postmaster or file a complaint with the US Postal Service Inspectors: https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx
https://www.usps.com/
I would not recommend calling the number and verifying anything.

Received a "Signed by Sara"" too. They used 1-877-687-3516 number. Marked letter with "Returned to Sender - Occupants moved - No forwarding address".
Adding 1-877-687-3516 to the who called me list.
Swing and a miss!

I am thinking of taking them to small claims court for violation of the FDCPA. Has anyone tried the same?

Do you have some info about this number?
Casy 2011-05-03 21:35:22 Unknown
I am amazed at how long this scam has been going on! The posts are as old as 2007!! This is 2011! Well, just toss the letter in the trash folks.
KT 2011-03-03 19:34:52 Unknown
For real, if they know your address anyway then send me a letter stating how much I 'owe'. This was so weak. Stupid fks.

Same game different number 2010-01-06 19:28:52 Unknown
I got the same letter from them, but contact us at 1800-949#. I knew it was a collection agency trick when I read it. Very weak! This reminded me of the "You've won a brand new TV, or $5,000, or whatever, come to this address with the letter to claim your prize", that has been used before by different police dept. Deception + Curiousity + Greed = Setup (or a Scam!)

i got this very same letter. That is b***s***.
They obviously have my address, why don't they send me an actual bill, or an overview of what i owe. I didn't see any outstanding bills on my credit report. This is really annoying.

Thanks for the info, I thought the letter was strange but I didn't want to call the number back until I knew what it was about. Now that I know, I'm definitely never calling it back.. See ya 1-800-851-7857
Thanks again!!

Seriously glad to know that it's exactly what I figured it was! I'm glad that I thought the same thing and have yet to call-thank you for posting. If they don't have the balls to put their company name and/or logo on the letter, they can p****off! They'll get a call from my bankruptcy attorney! Lol!

Letter on beige stationary with no letterhead or any information to identify the company. Times Roman font. "We have finally received your records.
Please contact us at 1-800-851-751-7857."
Then asks you to enter a file number to "speed up the process."
A "Thank you!"
Then signed in blue pen "Kayli" "Service Department"
Kayli is in big loopy letters with a heart over the "i" very much like a high school senior yearbook signature. The whole thing looks like a kid wrote this "note."
Very misleading. Do not call unless you want to talk to this bill collector. Thank you Richard for listing this number.
Richard 2007-04-30 19:18:38 Debt Collector
Have received first class letters with a St. Paul, Minnesota P.O. Box 270160 return address but no company name. The letters say "We have finally received your records. Please contact us at 1-800-851-7857. When you call, you will be prompted for a five digit extension or file number (which is in the letter) and then connected to a representative. This is a bill collecting service trying to track you down. If you call from your home or cell phone, they've got you. If you call, call from a pay phone & do not give your home or cell number. If you enter your true file number, they will know what part of the community you are in by the pay phone area code (which they can see on their equipment). So, if you want to talk with them, you might enter a fake id number. Otherwise, ignore the letter. (Note: I'm paying all of my creditors in full ... but got behind when I was embezzeled out of all of my money ... which I am in the process of recovering.)
