I got a text message which said TELCO COMMUNITY CU Alert. That my card beginning with 4792 had been deactivated and I needed to call this number. The call was from 828-279-0876. I did not call the number. This is not a TELCO number and they do not send out text messages. I will call TELCO on Monday.

Ditto - all of the above - we live in Asheville & are customers of Verizon. Some of my co-workers also received this text message - they are with Verizon as well.

My husband and I both received text messages this evening basically saying the same as all the rest of the posts. I have verizon also. We need to post on WLOS!!!

Just got the same message today, obviously someone pfishing. Calling telco monday to let them know someone's masquerading as them. I never even heard of this credit union before tonight.

I got a text meaasge from Telco Community Cu Alert stating that my credit card beginning in 4792 had been cancelled and was asked to call 275-2190 and give my 16 digit credit card number .I looked it up in the reverse # check on the web and found out that I was not the only one that this has happened to.Please stick it to those responsible as life is hard enough without having to deal with folks that are dishonest.

I just got the same thing on my cell phone. Same exact message about my card being deactivates and to call in with my 16 digit credit card #. Wow..this is scary.

I just sent an email to Telco cu after receiving this same text. I have never had an account with them and everyone who has ever activated or deactivated a CC knows they use the four ending digits. I hope nobody fell for this, but we have some folks in these mountains who are a little umm, not so tech savvy. I don't know, but it pisses me off.

I called the number and punched in a bunch of random numbers. It was pretty good. It asks for cc#, then expiration date, 3 digit code, then zip code. Zip code makes since now since a lot of places are asking for that, then finally social. Then it just says the card is activated and hangs up.

My husband and I both just got the same message. We live in WNC. I assume everyone else does as well as the number texting us is an Asheville, NC based number. We don't have any Telco accounts. I thought it was bizzare that they said my card STARTING with 4792. The STARTING numbers identifies the bank, not the account - but if they have the rest of the numbers then they just verified some information.
I encorage everyone to call Telco and let them know what is going on. They can notify their members of this scam.

I got this same message too. I responded, but called my husband & he told me to IMMEDIATELY deactivate all of our cards with this bank & order new ones, so I did. Then I tried calling the number back & it said it was disconnected. So bizarre. We had just received new cards from the bank, so I thought it had something to do with that. Obviously not.

I received a text message tonite (Feb 25 2011) from 828-275-2190. It said "TELCO COMMUNITY CU, your card starting with 4792 has been deactivated. Please call us at 828-275-2190. I did call the number from another line, and it was a recording asking me to enter my 16 digit"s" (not digit) account number. Do they really think I am that stupid??????? Obviously. But, I'm not, and I DIDN'T!!!
