The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I received a call from an UNKNOWN phone number.  A guy by the name of David left me a message. He used my maiden name not my married name, which I have had for over 15 years now. He said that they know I drive an Impala and they will be at my house to serve me with papers at 2pm today or they will come to my work. I called back and was told that they don't have a "David." I told the lady that he JUST called me and she proceeded to tell me that my file was on the attorney's desk and she had to go get it. She came back and said that I owe for a hot check because someone tried to take a payment that I authorized out of my bank account and it was closed. I told her that I find that hard to believe seeing as how I've had the same bank account for 20 years. She started telling me that I need to pay $3k today in order to stop the filing. I explained to her that 1) I'm not paying $3k over the phone to ANYONE and 2) I would like to speak to a supervisor because I needed more information into this. She said that I needed to stop with the attitude, that I'm the one with the warrant and she hung up on me.  I never raised my voice and never got angry or had an attitude other than I wanted more information on this.  If this was an attorney's office I highly doubt they would hang up on me.  I also asked for the name of the company and/or lawfirm that they were claiming to be and was never given a name. I guess I'll wait to be served with papers!

My husband received a call from someone at this number. They say that they are a carrier service and they told him that I had 48 hours to contact them or have my attorney contact them regarding an important matter. They would not give him any information over the phone and they repeatedly asked him to tell them where I was. He told them that it was their job to find me and unless they wanted to pay him a 10% finders fee, he would not cooperate. They cussed him out and then hung up on him. It's been more than 48 hours and I have yet to see any paperwork.

Received a call from a Lisa Arnold who said she worked for private carrier legal courier with the county.  Said she wanted to serve me with some papers and would be at my house and/or work, tomorrow between noon and 5pm.  If I wanted to stop this action, I was to call 1-844-291-6333 and provide them with a case number.  I called the number to see what this was about - no one answered - then the call dropped!  Scammers!!!

A woman answers the phone "This is Kim." told her my 'case number' and she pulled up an old loan I wasn't able to pay off. Didn't provide the mailing address and said I had to pay upwards of $1,700 by today to avoid court. Said she was with the company "DelRay" I can't find any site that matches the name with the number.
