I get these calls everyday. Its a collection agency. I had a hospital bill about 3 years ago, paid in full, and these knuckleheads are calling me telling me I owe $275.00. I told them to send me a bill, and they never did, but they keep calling. Just ignore them and they will go away.

No, you do not send them a debt validation letter. If they asked you for one, it may mean your debt has expired per the statute of limitations for your state http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html and you don't have to pay though they can keep trying to collect (the statute does not bar expired-debt collection attempts). If you send them a validation letter, this will reset the clock on the statute of limitations for the debt so don't do it. If anything, the debt collector must send the debtor written Validation of Debt per the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf and not the other way around.
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A DEBT COLLECTOR TO CALL THE WRONG NUMBER OVER AND OVER.

YES THEY CAN BE SUED
FDCPA -
Harassment. Debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. For example, they may not:      repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone.

UNDER TCPA - they can also be sued for $500. PER CALL, because the person they are harrassing IS NOT THE PERSON THEY ARE LOOKING FOR

wow.. These people are a***oles.   I got a call from them..  He was rude on the phone when I asked who there were.  I was not going to give any personal information out over the phone to someone I dont know!   He had a prissy british accent and was a  smart a**.  I told him I  have paid the bill and he said he wanted proof.  I told him I would not deal with him and that I'll deal with the clinic.. He said you cant we have the account now.  I told him to screw off and hung up.  I searched my credit card statements and bang bang..  Its paid.  Calling the clinic tomorrow to let them have it.  I hate collectors.. bunch of hyenas.

The needs to be clarification on some of your information.  Agencies do not even see hospital accounts until 90-120 after the discharge date.  The hospitals want to try to get as much money as possible before referring to an agency.  Even at that point, the most agencies do not consider suit actions until 50-90 days after placement and usually that is per agreement with the hospital.  So, your "claim" of getting legal notices 1 month after your date of service is most likely incorrect.

This disreputable company preys on patients who are having a difficult time managing payment of medical bills.  They served legal notice of collection less than one month after date of service.  No prior communication was made to inform of an outstanding bill or any issue will billing.

Federal debt collection laws say nothing about allowing debt collectors to be as aggravating as they want. In fact, the law indicates just the opposite. Not only does the FDCPA specifically regulate the tactics and behavior of debt collectors, it also ensures that a consumer has no obligation to ever communicate with a debt collector. What's more, under the FDCPA, the consumer can direct the debt collector to cease all attempts to communicate with him or her.

In other words, debt collectors can be as aggravating as they want only if a consumer permits them to be.

You can't. there's unfortunately nothing illegal in attempting to collect a debt that is owed to you. By law, they can be as aggravating as they want to. The good news is though, that if you ever lend someone money and they don't pay you back, you are afforded the same rights!

I recieved yet another call from this medical collection agency- evidently my business cell once belonged to someone they need to collect from.  Although they promised to take the number out of their database I have called seven times and been assured the same, and now I receive calls in the
middle of the night while I am traveling in Asia.   Now they just hang up when I call.   I've asked them to look up the owner of the phone number to prove I am not the person they are looking for but apparently it is just easier to keep waking me up in the middle of the night.  How do I sue them for harrassment?

Call came in for my wife. Pressed '9' to connect to an agent (obviously some sort of predictive dialer system that connects the agent with the call once they find somebody home). I complied and was placed on hold listening to some cheesy rendition of Für Elise (Bagatelle in A minor - Ludwig van Beethoven would roll over in his grave!); I held for about 4 minutes with occasional interruptions by a recording indicating to continue waiting. It finally hung up on me. Sure would like to know what company it is so I could return the favor.
