Hi Angela,
I got the same call today July 6, 2012 for my husband. A woman called threatening to come to his home or workplace on july 10, 2012. We have no idea what it is in regards to, she doesnt give any names or company just that her name was Carrie Mitchell and she was responding to a claim against him. Is this a scam? We have no knowledge of anything she is saying! My husband is a JR. and if it is real it might be for his dad because its happened in the past. If you know anything more about this please reply back. We are in the DC, MD area... are you?

I got a call today on my house phone then my cell and then they called my mom.  I live in a mother/daughter house so my mom came to me and asked what was going on.  They shouldn't be calling other people and discussing anything with them.  They also have my sister involved in this and that I can't for the life of me figure out.

I spoke to the person that belongs to the 855-250-3484 number and he said that my file had already left his office.  But he then found a hard copy of my case.  He went on and on and when I said I spoke to Cashnet his attitude changed and he said good luck and hung up.

He said he wasn't asking for any money because it was out of his office.  I said the lady just called and the case is not there.  That makes no sense.  He said that is was bad check and the attempt to defraud.  Some loan in Jan. of 2010.  I spoke to people back then when this happened and I told them it wasn't me that did this.  This is driving me nuts as to how these people are trying to scare me with being arrested and going to jail.  I am very sick with C.O.P.D. with oxygen therapy so this is only making my condition worse.

Does anyone know what is going on with this?

I keep getting calls from a private number and they leave a message and give this 855-250-3484 number. Some lady leaves a message threatening to come by to home address or place of employment. I called back to get company's info and they put you on hold and never come back to the line.

Who's Calling? That Debt Collector Could Be a Fake
Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Debt Collector
Got a call from a Jordan Kelly saying they were going to serve me and my husband for an old Payday loan from Cashnet. I called back talked to some rude lady that insisted we pay 900.00 or go to court and pay 3800.00. I told her we weren't paying them anything as the original debt was paid and that it was an reported identity theft issue. I called back and talked to a Michel Wilson who said he would send us a email to verify the debt. I told him I wanted their address. He said it would be in the email. It was not nor was there any information to verify the debt. Called back and asked for the address and was hung up on twice. Called Mr. Wilson back, he didn't even know his own name when I asked if it was him. He also refused to give me the address. He said the attorneys he worked for would proceed with the claim. I told him to go ahead because the statute of limitations was up on the debt and i was reporting them to the Attorney General and the Fair Trade Commission because they violated the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act. We shall see what happens because I did report them and I know it's a scam because last year they called saying they were a different law firm and said they were issuing a warrant for my husbands arrest. When I told them I contacted the bank vice president to look into it they stopped calling.
