It's someone spoofing the federal student loan program.  Real government agencies don't call you using fake caller ID. They want you to hand over your personal financial information. Don't fall for it.

Think about it. Does Uncle Sam call people? No.  On the other hand, scammers DO.  Even if you had a student loan, any legitimate lender would send you paperwork and not bother you at odd hours by calling from numbers using phony caller ID.

Received a call, no message. There is in fact a website ( http://www.myfedloan.org/special-consolidation/special-consolidation.shtml ) , and I have received emails re-consolidation prior to this, and their website masthead states they are a "Department of Education Servicer". There is also a reference to PHEAA,
Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, at the bottom. Is everyone receiving the call in PA?
May not be relevant, because our current governor likes to outsource EVERYTHING, so PHEAA might be selling it's services to the FED for handling a consolidation effort. I would still like to talk to someone at US Department of Education for confirmation that this is a legitimate outfit. I do have loans, but I've NEVER received a direct call from them, nor from PHEAA. If it IS legit, they really need to work on how they contact people. The thing says TODAY is the deadline for this, which makes NO sense. You can consolidate through
FAFSA/Dept of Ed ANY time. Something still stinks about this. Be careful, everyone.

Received call 3:02 pm on a Saturday afternoon. Did not answer.  No voicemail left.  When I called the number back no more than a minute later, it said it was FedLoan servicing, but then gave me the message to call back during normal business hours.  I have student loans but this does not appear to be legitimate.

I contacted FAFSA and a service rep. told me that he could not confirm if the webpage www.fedloan.org/sdcl and the phone number 18552654036 are legitimate U.S. Department of Education sponsor webpage and phone number.  The person I was speaking to on FAFSA told me to go to www.StudentLoans.gov to find out if you are eligible for Special Direct Consolidation.

I did not find out if www.fedoan.org/sdcl  and the 1855 number are legitimate, but I think it is just way safer to go to www.StudentLoans.gov to find out if you are really qualified.  And if you have any questions, you can call at 1-800-433-3243 (number to FAFSA).

They are a student loan manager.  They tried to call me apparently because my online account is locked.  The reason it is locked is because the a** wipes won't allow more than one login at a time and if anything tries to login twice, they screw up your account.  My bill pay service and my service that tracks my current debt both access the account, and I might try to access the account at the same time, to see how late they were about applying my last payment...AGAIN!

I finally gave up and refuse to call them back every time they lock my account!  They are retards and should be forced to go away!

Got a call shortly after the post above. Didn't answer. I just recently made a payment on my fedloan and treated some contact info. Maybe related to that? For those worried about the changes to student loans congress is talking about it won't affect current loans at all. If this call were important they'd have left a message, let alone not called me on Sunday morning.

You may work there but this isn't through the Federal Government.  If  you are eligible for that consolidation, they will contact you via mail.  Go to the actual government website and look it up.  I would not give any information to this caller!

Just received a call from this number. I wasn't aware the government worked on Sundays!!! I've been getting calls from this number frequently and since I've heard 855 numbers can charge back to my phone I don't answer. It is curious that I did get a letter last week from FedLoan Servicing stating  my phone number appeared to be incorrect. Maybe because I haven't been answering? lol. My perspective is, if they could send me a letter to ask about my phone number, they could send me a letter in regards to the phone calls they've been trying to make. Plus, if it's legit, they would leave a message. On the other hand, we are talking about the government.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over communications from FedLoan Servicing and scammers. The first mail I received from them last fall looked like junk mail, and I almost threw it away. At the last minute, I decided to open it, and it was the paperwork for my student loan. Now I receive emails that look bogus, so I just delete them. I received a call from this number, and with only the number appearing on the ID, I let it go.

When I need to contact the genuine FedLoan Servicing that is part of the U.S. Department of Education, through an office in Harrisburg, PA (I think my first communication was from Georgia), I refer to my original documents. You can also contact them at www.MyFedLoan.org (it would help if it were .gov).

I just received a call from my mother in law who said this company called her. I called them back and wanted to know why they were calling. they were trying to talk to my child and wanted SS numbers....I told them, there was no way i was giving this information over the phone and that my child is a minor child.  This seems like a high suspicious call.  they kept referring to her 'account'  I kept telling him that she doesn't have an account becaue we've never taken out any money with them.  Basically in the end, he admitted that they were 'fishing' for numbers...my guess is they looked on facebook and found relatives that they claim are 'reference'  well, in order to be a reference, one has to fill out an application which we haven't done.  DO NOT GIVE INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE and MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN KNOW THIS TOO!!!!!

A TOTAL SCAM to get your information! The website that comes up attached to this phone number does look legit, but the real website for loan information is totally different.

These SCUM BAGS prey on young college students who think someone is doing them a favor. As someone else said, if you gave them information CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT and report suspicious activity.

FAFSA is the REAL website. I hope they find and prosecute these jerks

I am sure you do work for "them", and by "them" I mean the scammers. Everyone beware that the scammers themselves can post positive posts here saying this is legit. Think about if this was a federal loan servicing company that is legit would they even have the time to post remarks saying this is legit?

Whe people like this call tell them to send youbte information thought the US mail, and not email so you can look over the information and decide. I bet they don't send anything.

Have had numerous calls from this # 855-265-4036.
When I have answered it is a recording. I quickly disconnect.
But, they keep calling. The message is about education loans. I have no education loans.

I just answered this call, said, "Hello," and received no response.  The call was placed on a Sunday at 2:40 in the afternoon, so I am skeptical that it would be a loan consolidation service.

It is not a scam. Just go to your online account all of the info is there. It's a one time shot at consolidating direct loans (only) at a slightly lower rate. They cannot have already been a direct loan. You don't have to do any of that over the phone. Start from your account online that you have a secure password for. There is no scam in using your own password people! If you go to Fafsa and NSLDS it will give you then info on the "bill" enacted to do this whole deal. Chill out! It's just an automated msg!

I received the same as everyone else, and I would also like to point out that scammers routinely go on sites like this one to cover their tracks! So seeing these positive postings further lead me to believe this is a scam. It's no different than a hotel going on hotels.com and bragging about how great their hotel is even though they have rats, roaches and bed bugs!  Call your states attorney's office and see if they are getting complaints about it! The FEDERAL GOV'T DOES NOT CALL YOU PAST 6 and ON WEEKENDS about Student Loans or anything else for that matter! If they are claiming to be from the US GOV'T they are lying to you! DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR INFO!

Maybe ownership of the number has since changed since your call, but this number is associated with the (legitimate) United States Federal Government student loan program. It's posted on their website here: http://www.myfedloan.org/special-consolidation/special-consolidation.shtml
Hover over "Phone" in the "Help Center" box on the right.

It's not a scam. If you're already using Fed Loan Servicing (I think everyone is now since the financial meltdown), then you should've received numerous email offers for the loan consolidation already. I know I did. Further, the site that comes up when you google the phone number, http://www.myfedloan.org/special-consolidation/special-consolidation.shtml    if you look on the right side of the page and click phone, you'll see the same number under "FedLoan Servicing Borrowers".

Well, I got a call on Tuesday at 9:30am. I missed the call but called right back. It seems perfectly legitimate. I talked to a representative who informed me that there is a special trial right now to help students consolidate their student loans at a special rate until mid 2012. He referred me to www.myfedloan.org and www.nsldf.ed.gov and also the FAFSA websites. So I don't think it could be a scam, or why would they have me deal directly from the known legitimate websites. At the end of the call they were really professional and asked if they had given good service and if they had answered all of my questions, etc.. So I think it is not a scam. Anyways, if I choose to respond I will do so over the internet site. So no worries. A lot of really paranoid peeps out there?

Missed the call on 02/11/2012 at 1 pm. I am curious if FedLoan's database has been partially leaked: scammers have my phone number and e-mail (I   keep receiving those "Special Offers from DOE" since late December which I usually put into spam folder) . What else to they know?
To security IT folks: you need to do a better job by protecting your clients information.
I cannot wait for the times when we as consumers will be throughly informed when, what type of info, from whom has been stolen.

The number appears on the Dept. of Education Student Loan site. But why would they be calling on the weekend and why would the caller ID show "800 Service"? Sound strange to me.
