Debt Collector
Collection agency using (illegal) threats. They claim you have to call them back because "they have court papers" that will be delivered to your home or work. They even go so far as to try to intimidate you by saying your boss has to be present as a witness when you sign. The only problem is they are fishing! They will say whatever to make you think you are in legal trouble when you are NOT!

Another interesting thing, A quick google search pulled up this BUffalo, NY Craigslist ad looking for collection agents! So yeah, IGNORE< IGNORE< IGNORE!!! Do not answer, return calls OR even confirm who you are. If you must answer, just tell them they have the wrong number & to stop calling.

Yep:

In US law, a payday lender can use only the same industry standard collection practices used to collect other debts, specifically standards listed under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

In many cases, borrowers write a post-dated check (check with a future date) to the lender; if the borrowers don't have enough money in their account, their check will bounce.

Payday lenders will attempt to collect on the consumer?s obligation first by simply requesting payment. If internal collection fails, some payday lenders may outsource the debt collection, or sell the debt to a third party.

A small percentage of payday lenders have, in the past, threatened delinquent borrowers with criminal prosecution for check fraud.[16] This practice is illegal in many jurisdictions and has been denounced by the CFSA, the industry's trade association.

Nope.  You're the one full of it..... Per the FDCPA, debt collectors MUST mail proof that the person they are calling owes the debt and that they are legally able to collect said debt in that person's state.  If the debt collector refuses, that is a violation of the FDCPA, and they are owed nothing.  And there's nothing "legit" about calling people and threatening them - debt is civil, not criminal, so no one is going to be arrested.  In fact, to threaten people like this is one sure-fire way for a debt collector to be the one paying out money to the alleged debtor for violations of the FDCPA.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Debt Collector
my father in law received a call from this number asking for a phone number for my husband, saying it had to do with his ss#.  I returned the call and spoke with a "Tom" who stated that he was with a mediation group and was wanting to collect money for a bad check from over a year ago.  He was very pushy at trying to get me to give him my debit card info over a cell phone-NOT!!!  He also said that if I did not return his call by the end of business today7-2-2013 and give him by banking info, that my husband could be arrested for bank and check fraud.  Any suggestions?  Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

I got a message AT WORK saying that they have a legal delivery for someone associated with that number...well, how do I know that is me?  The (nameless) guy (probably a recording) said he's from AMG & Associates.  OK, what the hell does that mean?  And also, it says that if you think you've received this message in error, you have to call them back anyway to have your number removed.  OMG, eff you people!  Whether it is for me (highly unlikely) or my precedessor, you have no right to be calling a business with this nonsense!

Probably a scammer.  Sounds like them - they'll call and say there's a claim been filed against your SSN and name and that you owe on a bogus debt (usually a payday loan or "bad" check).  They'll also say either you're going to be arrested, or they want to serve papers.  It's all a ploy to scare people into paying money they don't even owe.  Never pay anyone a dime unless they MAIL you proof that you owe a debt.
