As a reminder, they use big strong deep voices to scare you, like a lion roars to scare it's prey.

Don't flinch. Follow the steps in my post above.

My high school age daughter was called by this number, she hasn't got any debt and hasn't given out this cell number to anyone other than friends.  It is a scam, not a debt collection company.

This is  a collection company, as has been explained above.

They ask your DOB to verify who you are because it's illegal to start yelling at you and intimidating you about unpaid debts before confirming they have the right person. They're been contracted or authorized by whoever you owe money to (likely a credit card company).

IMPORTANT NOTE: If it's been two years since you've made a payment to the people you owe, and you live in Ontario, you are legally exempt from paying a dime. If they sue you (which they won't, because they know they'll lose), you can simply refer to the fact that the SOL (Statute of Limitations) has expired on the debt, and the case will be dismissed.

You can verbally tell them that "you'll consider a final and complete settlement offer in writing from them for ($X -- whatever amount you're in a position to pay)" or you can just ignore them. Up to you. It'll stay on your credit record for many more years if you ignore it, but if they accept your offer, it can be purged.

MY NON-LEGAL SUGGESTION: Verbally offer them 5%, and demand them to provide a written contract indicating that this 5% payment comprises a full and complete settlement of your owed amount. Inform them that your offer to resolve this debt for 5% of what's owed will expire in 72 hours, and give them a fax number to send you the contract. Triple-check it to ensure it truthfully indicates that their acceptance of a 5% settlement offer completely resolves the entire debt owed. If they accept it (they might, they might not, depending on how old their involvement in your case is), another collection agency will likely try to scare you into paying the remaining 95% owed, at which point, you can provide the signed document and proof of payment, and they'll be forced to go away.

HELPFUL TO KNOW: They purchase these debts for pennies on the dollar and then try to make their money back by scaring and strong-arming you. They intentionally hire men with big deep voices, and use all kinds of pseudo-legal pretend jargon to make you think they're about to sue your face off, when that's the last thing they intend to do.

Don't be afraid. Yes, it's your fault that you own money, and you should pay your debts, but don't let them freak you out. Fix it, and take cover under the protection of the Canadian law while you sort things out. Pay off as much as you possible can afford to. It's the best way to sleep at night and look yourself in the mirror tomorrow morning.

I took the time to write this so that you wouldn't be afraid, while you find a way to pay back what you owe, and get your life and finances back on track.

no one on line when answered ... normally would not answer unknown number ... but did not have glasses on and was just waiting for a call back from a family member, so assumed it was them ... no idea what the call was about - or who it was actually from ... no message either

It's strange, I just got a call this morning from a number 416-907-0000, but there was no one there when I answered, then all of a sudden I had a message on my answering machine when I hung up.

James Larkin 1-855-787-3839 ext 5011 and he left a voice message with a reference number to give him when I called him back. He didn't say where he was calling from or what it was in regards to, and I am certainly not in any kind of debt, nor do I ever give out any kind of personal information over the phone, so needless to say he won't be getting a call back from me.

I also got a call from this number from a Mrs. Evans at 1-855-787-3839 ext 5016.  She left a voicemail on my phone at work on  Aug. 20th.  I've been on vacation and called her back today her message said it was an urgent matter and left me a reference number.  When I called her back and gave her the reference number she asked me for my DOB.  I told her that I was not going to give out my DOB without knowing who she was or why she was calling, she said she needed to identify me and already had the information on file... I got a very funny feeling and hang up the phone.  Any accounts that I have I set up have my home number, so not sure where they got my work number and if it was so urgent why I didn't get any mail notifications or calls at home.

It sounds fishy to me too!

They called a week or two ago and left a message on my answering machine.  "Liz Evans" said she was from CRM Canada and left her phone number as 855-787-3839 extension 5016

An "urgent" matter pertaining to "a file in her office requiring immediate resolution".

Sounds like a scam to me!!  Didn't even get my name right.
