The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Rude call.  Very vague about the subject.  Threatened me with "unintended consequences".  Thanks to all of you for your posts. I feel a lot better knowing this is some kind of game.

Prank Call
I've gotten the same exact messages as everyone else! They are super annoying and need to be stopped! I got a call from a David McIlhaney PTC Investigations saying that someone at my address was part of an investigation and I need to call his office or the "client" directly so they can continue their investigation. The number he call me from was (602) 398-9300. The number he told me to call him back on was (601) 398-9300 and the "client's" number he told me to call was (855) 819-6410. It's all a scam!

I knew it. All you have to do is to check the number to verify a suspicion. My answering machine caught two calls since Friday by rather crude people asking for "a person of interest" I'd never heard of for the purpose of delivering documents (serving papers). Of course the very last thing I'm going to do is to respond to misguided calls from people who sound like miliant telemarketers, because that's exactly what they want you to do. They claim to represent an outfit named TPC Investigations process servers at 855-819-6410.

I'm not worried, because if these clowns are legitimate, they'll show up at my door to serve papers and I'll get to deal with them face-to-face. The unnerving aspect of it all is that while they got the name wrong, they called MY number blurting out my actual street address! Now, they could only have gotten that information from a credit card on file somewhere, or directly from the phone company itself. That's why I believe this is nothing more than calculated and deliberate harrassment of land-line customers. I mean, it's not just these people, I get calls every day from a variety of collectors over debts I don't even owe. That's why I have my answering machine set to intercept ALL incoming calls. I suggest you start doing the same from now on.

I am getting the exact same calls from these numbers; identical M.O.  And the call back number is always different from the Caller I.D.   The 601.398.9300 was a new one on me & I picked up.  It was a robo call with that icky voice threatening me to respond or else.  Foolishly I hit "1" so I could tell these guys to leave me alone.  THAT was a mistake.  The live jerk (a guy named "Ryan" got very very nasty with me.  He implied that my lack of cooperation forced him to dispatch someone to serve the papers today.  I kept trying to tell him they had the wrong number, but he insisted the "judge" was not wrong and I would be sorry.  Holy crap...who are these people??

They call from all kinds of numbers.  Every time I block one, they dial in on another.  Every time it's with a slightly different story but the same, cheesy evil villainous voice.  I imagine they are scaring some people into paying whatever amount of money they're asking for and for whatever reason they have fabricated.  Someone needs to stop these people.  I have saved all the voicemails as well and will henceforth be recording any conversations I may have with them as evidence of their tactics.

Same gruff sounding guy has called several times with different names, call back numbers, case numbers and vague stories demanding I call back. I saved them all on voicemail and listened to them together. The scam apparently works sometimes.

Some woman called me from a california number... left me the 8558196410 and she said that she was about to file a case against me and its a pretty serious matter, and that I already had a case against me... which is odd because I don't know of any civil cases against me or criminal for that matter.. but I am really curious as to see what they want from me that they're leaving threatening voicemails on my phone... she nvr said what it was about just pretty much threatened to take me to court... I don't kno wat for but I am going to be brave and find out lol.

Got a voice mail from a blocked number. A female voice claiming to be from PTC Investigations, polite enough, didn't give a name, said there are some legal documents for me at "the clerk's office". Left the 855-819-6410 as a number to contact the plaintiff to settle out of court.  A simple web search for PTC Investigations showed a Paid-to-Click ad site, not any sort of legal firm. Did not try calling the phone number.

Said his name was Brad Thomson from CSIR. Same as what others are saying: important tax matter, in my best interest to contact him immediately, failure to comply will result in unintended consequences. Leaves 855-819-6410 as call back number.

Came in on a local line 303-495-6802.

Someone named Michael left a message - said he was from PTC investigation regarding an ongoing liability claim. Left phone number of 855-819-6410 with a reference number and said it was a time sensitive matter.  It seemed strange.

Have received several calls over the last few months from 855-819-6410. Voice sounds disguised -- like a cheesy crime drama villain. Said his name was Roger Hansen from CSIR. Same as others are reporting: important tax matter, in my best interest to contact him immediately, dire consequences, etc etc. Leaves 657-999-6075 as call back number. Have also received same message from that 657 number.

Not that it will do any good, but also reported to FTC/do not call.

I just listened to my voice messages where a very gruff voiced man said I had "Important tax matters" and I needed to call some 657-something number. I agree--it was a creepy voice! I get these calls periodically and it's always some dire thing where if I don't call, I'll have serious legal issues. What a scam! I hope no one gets duped by these.

These people keep calling my house to collect a bill for a Tammy Baker. I do not know her , but they do not seem to care. I have reported them to the attorney general. Hopefully that will help. To make it worse, my number is suppose to be unlisted.
