Caller "Hi this is Alex with the National Gift Center calling in regards to the entry form you submitted in the grand giveaway sweepstakes in hopes of winning the new Lincoln Navigator. Give the office a call at 866-401-4626. Again that is toll free 866-401-4626. There is a time limit. Again this is Alex .. will be waiting on your call. Once again congratulations."
For one thing I would never fill out an entry form for a Lincoln Navigator. I prefer small fuel efficient cars. So I knew this was a scam right away.

Got a message from "Bill" about a contest for a Lincoln Navigator, I didn't remember entering, but I thought I might have and forgotten about it. They asked me to call back 866 401 4626 about some "good news."
I called back and asked for "Bill," but was asked to "verify my entry form," by answering some demographic information. When I was skeptical of giving them more information about myself, the operator became nasty and rude and hung up on me.

A red flag should go up when :
1) there is no named contest
2) the winners name is not specified
3) the caller's number ( for those that don't have caller ID- if you dial *(star) 69 the voice server will tell you the last number that dialed your home) is not the number to return the call, nor does, in this case, the calling number EVER answer. There are other ways to trace the number as well, then report it to the FTC's fraud division, and your local BBB, attorney general and any other consumer related agencies in your telephone book- the yellow pages lists many under "social service agencies", or consumer agencies and/or " consumer protection services"
4) you don't remember entering any contest " a long time ago" as this recording stated
5) there is no claim number, ID number, the name of a contact person and their direct extension or any other important claim details regarding the "prize" or "contest"
6) you did not give your home phone number on any entry - this is a good use of the GOOGLE VOICE service. Google voice allows anyone to b choose a telephone number and link any telephone you own ( cell phones, home phones, business phones, etc.) to it. It can then be used on forms, etc. and will not only signal that you specifically used the number to identify phone calls that are other than friends family or business associates and will give you a text transcript of the caller's spiel that you can then print out to submit to law enforcement, etc. ahould the need arise that you have to document harrasment, phishing or fraud sales calls, or otherwise unwanted phone calls...and its a free feature accessible through google utilities or add-ons, or simply by typing google voice in a search box.
7) if enough people contact the originator and inform them of the attorney generals contact in this matter and that you wish them to cease and desist and remove your name from their calling list(s) they may be shut down- but it takes the power of the people to accomplish this and people united to accomplish tasks that seem futile if attempted alone.
8) if you do call the number and get a human- do not let them take your time in any way other than your gaining as much information as possible about the company, the motivation for their call, terms of "claiming the prize", a direct telephone number to a corporate spokesperson, or otherwise, their headquarters and that physical address. The representative's badge or ID number and direct extension, the physical location of their office, the manager's name, the supervisors name and phone extension.Ask to escalate the call to a superior and try to get information from them, record any and all conversations ( in some states you have to tell the person you are taping the call- but I find it within the scope of their ethics to wait until you have gotten all info you can to let them know the call was recorded).-
Bottom line if you are serious about stopping these calls get all the information you can about the company, the reason for the call, the corporation that has hired them to "process prize claims" ) - theoretically, this would be the sponsoring company of the contest you entered.DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION- use a false name - if the call were legitimate they would have your correct name and verify it. use Google Voice or a similar service to provide a return call phone number other than your actual home phone if you request a conversation with a supervisor, etc. for the purpose of finding out about the organization perpetrating these types of scams. Know that this is a scam and mask your phone number ( the instructions to block your caller id on a per call basis are in the telephone book's info pages or you can dial # 411 and the operator will instruct you verbally) so they cannot sell or further rent your information to other similar nuisance calling telemarketers.
