I didn't answer the phone, and they left no message.  After reading on here that everyone said it was Bank of America, I called BofA.  She searched through her entire data base, and could not find this number in their system.  She said this number is NOT connected to the Fraud Dept., and to not give them any info if you answer your phone and talk to them. She also checked my debit card to be sure nothing was going on, and my card is just fine.

OK, the 3rd time they called today, I decided to answer it.

It turns out it was for someone who used to have this phone number, which is what the woman I had talked to earlier at BoA said may be the case, since I updated my mom's phone # while I was talking to the woman at BoA.

So, I called BoA back to ask them to remove our phone # from his account and to let them know he did not get the message about his debit or credit card being deactivated and replaced soon.  They said they would call him at a different number that they have for him to see if it was okay to remove our number from his account.  Ok.....that seems strange since this # no longer belongs to him, but at least maybe they will also let him know about the soon deactivation of his card.

We do not answer calls unless we know the person calling.  This Toll Free Number called us twice today 03/20/14. I googled the number and came across  people on 800notes.com saying this is a Bank of America Fraud Alert #.

Then, I called the local BoA branch that we were just at yesterday.  The woman I spoke to at that branch advised me to call the phone # on the back of my mom's debit card.

When I called that number, they didn't seem to have record of this 866-674-6217 being a BoA phone number.  They assured me that nothing was amiss regarding my mom's debit card or account.  The debit card is still active.

Soooooo.......take this for what it's worth to you - along with what the others have said.

Legitimate B of A call.  This is a valid BoA number that is being used to announce the 'mass compromising' of credit card numbers via an unnamed large vendor - and that new card numbers are being released.  Would not name large company that F'd Up and released personal card information.  B of A is doing a service pro actively attacking the data breach.  Think TARGET.

I also got a voice mail from this number -- the earlier part of the message was cut off, but the part of message I did get was indicating my card would be replaced. They had the last 4 digits of my current card and it didn't ask me to call this number back or anything; in fact it said to call the number on the back of my current card if I had questions.  Between that and the fact that not 5 minutes later I got an e-mail through my e-banking BoA account (which is a secure message center) to the same effect, I'd go so far as to say this number is legit and if you get a message like this, take it seriously.

2013-09-03. This is a valid BoA number that is being used to announce the 'mass compromising' of credit card numbers via an unnamed large vendor - and that new card numbers are being released. I did not answer the number (since it was unknown to me) and they left a voicemail to that effect.

I HAD ACTUALLY CALLED actually CALLED BoA DIRECT SEVERAL DAYS EARLIER using the number on the back of the credit card when I noticed a new credit card number on my account ... and they had told me exactly what the voicemail from this number told me. Hence this almost certainly a valid BoA fraud number.

Keep in mind that while this is almost certainly a VALID BoA number, scammers may SPOOF any caller ID number ... and so they may be PRETENDING to be calling from this BoA number. I believe that is why you see so many contradictory opinions about the validity of these kinds number at these websites. I believe in some cases it IS a valid BoA call, while in other cases is is scammers pretending to be BoA using a spoofed caller ID.

Accordingly, when you get these kinds of calls, always call back direct using the known telephone number on the back of the card to ensure you are actually communicating with BoA.

Yes, it's Bank of America fraud dept.  Many accounts compromised and a memo and a new card will be sent.   Don't use this card much so did not know it had been recently shut down.

They can't or won't say which merchant(s) were compromised.  This is not the first time we've had these problems with credit cards.    The number above is legitimate so go ahead and answer it; it's Bank of America.
