Report the call to your states Attorney General's office.  Also the Better Business Bureau.    This is personal information - MAKE THE CALLER GIVE YOU INFORMATION THAT PROGRESSIVE SHOULD HAVE ON YOU..... BETTER YET...  JUST TELL THEM THIS NUMBER IS BEING FORWARDED TO THE STATE ATT GEN OFFICE.   The practice of calling and verifying info.... IS NOT WARRANTED.   IF Progressive doesn't get aggressive about this....  then I suggest everyone put a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST PROGRESSIVE FOR MARKETING PRACTICES.....    one way or another DO NOT GIVE ANY INFORMATION!!!!

Got a call from this number wanting me to give them my birthday and drivers license number. Seems like a phishing scam to me.

This number called me and stayed the same things as above that they needed to update my drivers license number.  I felt weird about it so I said I would call back with the information.  I then called Progreasive directly and told them what happened and the progressive rep said that she did show that I got a calm from them about needing to update my DL number so I updated it with her.

It is actually Progressive apparently.  After giving my name, dob and drivers license I started to get a bit freaked out and immediately regretted it.  I logged into my account online and it showed the call and the update to my info.  It was from a driver's license in another state that hadn't gotten updated even though I moved 6 years ago.  Why it took them that long to say I needed to update my license, I don't know.  Agreed that the way they go about it is creepy.  I should have just hung up and called their main number.

"Progressive" called today to verify some drivers license info. The guy new my first name and asked me to verify my identity by saying my last name and birthday. I asked him to tell me my policy number. He said we cant give that out until you verify your identity which is standard. I said "sure but you called me. I need to verify who you are. He said "im calling from from
progressive". So i said " i verifyyou are talking to me" and ended by telling him Ill call progressive back directly. I did and sure enough...it was information phishing

This is legit, it is Progressive.  There was an automated message that says it is a call from Progressive and that there were two driver's licenses on my account.  When I connected to an agent, he explained that there is an automated system that scans account information to look for inconsistencies.  I had moved from FL to MD two years earlier (staying with Progressive) and so, I figured this was legit, especially since he knew what the other state was and my vehicle make and model (without me telling him).  I checked my on-line account at Progressive after the call and saw a policy change noted that said my DL had be updated from FL to MD.

I received a call yesterday from a number I did not recognize, which I answered. There was only silence on the other end, so I Googled the number and from reading the comments I determined it to be a phishing number. That number called again this morning, which I did not answer. Three minutes later, this number called me (866-840-4246). I thought the two numbers could be related, so I did not answer. After they didn't leave a message, I came on here and read the comments.

I have Progressive insurance, and I switched my policy from NY to MD last year when I bought a new car after moving to MD. The comments sounded like it could be Progressive robo-calling to have me update my license information. Rather than call Progressive back, I logged into my policy online, and they did have my outdated NY license info. I updated the policy to show my MD number, and I assume this number won't call again.

Received a call from this number asking for my girlfriend, who's also on the same policy. I wrote down the info and then with a Google search, ended up here. I don't trust phone calls, will likely respond with a request to either send forms in the mail or if they need updates, it can be done online.

I originally thought it was a scam (and all these comments made me even more paranoid). However, I did call their callback number which stated that I had a license in another start (i.e., my previous state) and they wanted to verify which I had. I was instructed to press 1 (or something) to speak with a rep (they also mentioned that I could call 1-800-PROGRESSIVE directly if the time wasn't convenient). So, I opted to call the number I had for Progressive directly because, naturally, I trusted that more. I spoke with a rep, told them what happened and they confirmed that it was them and that they had my license info down from my previous state. I updated it right then and there and that was the end of our call.

So, yes, it is legit; but the way they go about it is creepy. My advice is to just call Progressive directly.

I was very annoyed by the phone calls from this number. Repeated calls with nobody on the other end and only left silent voice mail messages. After reading other peoples' comments here, I realized that Progressive is also my auto insurance carrier and I never updated our drivers' license numbers with them. While the phone calls seem shady, I'm starting to think they are valid. Regardless, don't give them the information when they call you. Call Progressive yourself or update your info online.

I got this phone call 3 times today.  First two, they didn't leave a message, but the last one they left telling me to call this number and enter a message retrieval number.

I did and was connected to an English speaking operator who verified my name and DOB .  I explained the message I got and she stated that I had a MN DL number listed.  When I asked her to give me that number, it was the old number.  I had moved to WI 6 months ago and never changed the number on my Progressive Policy.

She changed it.

I immediately went online to check my policy and there was a change of my DL number at the same time.

This was a completely legitimate call.

Poorly handled...but legit.

Had the same experience... fishing for personal info... oddly enough someone also recently tried to apply for a credit card in my name using stolen personal information. (It was caught when screened by the credit card company and a fraud alert was placed). Im thinking Progressive leaked some personal info on their client list since everyone who gets this call are actually progressive customers.

This is a call from Progressive call although the above posts freaked me out.  The results of the call were changes to my policy and I did receive those from Progressive.

Agree that not handled well by Progressive. It appears they had system screw up and are having to call people to clean up.

It is progressive, but I too was uncomfortable giving my information to someone who randomly called me so I called progressive myself and they took care of it. I just think it was much safer and legit. They should really be telling people to call them back rather than calling and asking for identifying info over the phone.

Got the same call as the others, sounded not-legit, but I called in. I only gave the person on the line my DL# after asking THEM for verification (my policy number) that it was actually Progressive.  Just checked my online policy - and my old DL was on there (I had never changed it).

My vote: poorly run, shady seeming, but legit.

It is Progressive. I logged into my account and called their CS # directly. Turns out they had my son's license listed under state we don't live in - so they were calling to check on that. The woman I spoke to did not know about the automated calling - but when she looked at my son's info (who the automated call was asking for) she immediately noticed his license-state was different then the rest of us the policy.

It seems to be Phisher scam attack.
- report it to progressive & never answer it.

Progressive is a good company the would never cold call people & ask personal questions.

Do not answer & do not call them back.

Never give personal info to Anyone - especially some random strange caller out of the blue.

That is a bad idea.  Hang up & report weird calls to your phone service provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc....)

Don't fall for this!! Voicemail claimed the call was from Progressive but when I called the real Progressive number they had no record of contacting me. I reported the phone number, etc to the real Progressive (and you should too).

I just got this phone call, it felt weird, but I answered their questions (DOB and drivers' license number)...got a little "uh-oh" feeling after the fact, since I've had my new license for two years....I looked up the number and found this feed, panicked, and called one of Progressive's customer service numbers...the lady was very nice and confirmed it was them...she said Progressive will ask for that info, but never a credit card number (that would be a red flag)...she also said if I ever got another phone call I felt uneasy with, it would always be fine to say you're unavailable at that moment, and then call Progressive back yourself, so you know it's legit...

This number has called my cell several times over the past couple of days but not leaving voicemail.  Last night they did leave a robo-message to call them back at 1-866-840-4148 and punch in the message code that they gave me.  The message said that their records indicated that I needed to update my information with them as they'd recently discovered I had a DL in another state.  I DO use Progressive for my auto insurance, but I only have a valid DL in one state.  I've been living in my current state for over 6 years now.

Just called this number back and punched in the code they gave me.  A human (male, sounded American) picked up and asked if they were speaking to me (giving my full name including middle initial which is what I use on my checking account).  I said, "Yes."   He then quickly asked me to verify my date of birth.  I balked here and became suspicious, paused a long time and then told him, "You know what...  never mind" before ending the call.

It sounded legit at first, but on further pondering this I realized that as many proofs of identification as one has to provide to get a valid drivers license, I highly doubt that anyone else has obtained a DL in MY name in a different state.  The DL I had from the state I moved from OVER SIX YEARS AGO expired looooong ago.  Something is definitely fishy here.

I got robo-called from this # earlier this morning. The robot said it was Progressive and something about they have a driver's license in a state other than the one my policy is in on file for my account. I hit the one or 2 requested #'s to talk to a representative, and that is when I went from thinking it was probably legit, to feeling like I was on the phone with a Nigerian Prince (crook). I confirmed my name and birthdate right off the bat, but from that point, the guy could not even provide a straight forward answer to a straight forward question. He kept talking in circles, and no matter the question I asked he would end up saying something about, I don't need to worry about any penalties or things like that if I don't give him the info. WTF? What penalties would I be worried about and why? Who are you and what are you talking about? I told the guy he was creeping me out and hung up.

So then I called the customer service number on my proof of coverage card, 1-800-776-4737, and the rep was able to confirm that they do have robo-calls of this nature currently going out. I told them they either have a serious problem in their customer service dept, or a serious security breach. I gave them the 866-840-4246 # that called me, and they will be looking into it specifically and getting back with me to confirm it was actually progressive.

Long story short: it appears to be a legit call from Progressive conducted in an absolutely ridiculously shady manner.

I posted earlier today...they since called me again without leaving a message. Then they called a third time, at 7:51 p.m., and left an automated message like the one provided by another user above, except with a different code. I also have insurance with Progressive, so this is weird.
