Prank Call
I received a call today from Cape Coral FL 239-673-4712.  He left a message saying that he was Mr. Dave Sayre, and he was trying to contact my husband.  He was randomly selected to win this month's Publisher's Clearing House jackpot.  The message was not clear and I could not understand the amount he was supposed to have won.  Only the word dollars.  He was very hard to understand.  He left a call back number of 1-876-390-2817.  When I looked up the number I found this website.

I received a call exactly as  mentioned above. The voice of the UPS driver was synthesized. Its a new machine that telemarketers  in India use to parse English and to remove accents. Unfortunately, I called the number of his manager James Ballburg, whose voice was also synthesized. He said that PCH did not want a single dime from me,however I needed to get a MoneyPak card for $550.00 to register my prize of $900,000 and a 2014 Mercedes. I agree that it would have been nice,.but I hung up.

Prank Call
Four days ago, I got a phone call from a gentleman with a foreign accent; telling me that I had won Publishers Clearing House for five and one half million dollars and a new car.  He was congratulating me and tell me what I had to do before he could bring the balloons and the cardboard check to my address.  He had my exact address, an apartment, and even knew what plants I have on my patio.  All I had to do, was to go to my bank and purchase five money orders for $999.00.  I was to leave them blank, until his business assistant picked them up from me.  The business assistant was going to deliver the money orders to the IRS office in San Diego and verify that it was okay to deliver the balloons and check to me.  But I wasn't going to loose the money!  The IRS had already been notified about my win, and the money orders were going to pay the taxes on the five and one half million dollar win.  Mr. Billy Johnson assured me that was the only way I could collect the winnings.  I told him that I am on Social Security Disability and did not have the money to give to him.  He told me that he was sorry, but he would have to go to "the next winner."  I gave him my blessing and told him to go to the next winner.  He gave me his phone number in case that I changed my mind about paying my taxes in advance of my winnings.  He was going to be in Lakeside, California for the next two days.  Maybe I could borrow the money from somebody, since I could buy the money orders in one morning and cash the five and one half million dollar check before the bank closed that day.  I told him goodbye and never expected to here from him again, even though he gave me a phone number, 1-876-390-3145, where I could reach him if things changed over the day.  Obviously it was a scam and I hoped that the next person on the list would realize it is a scam and turn him down, too.  The next morning, at 6:15 a.m., he called me again.  Overnight, he felt bad that he had to give the money to the next person on the list.  He suggested that he could have someone at my door within thirty minutes to accompany me to my bank.  If I took out all of the money I had in the bank and give it to his associate,  he would explain the problem to the IRS and get them to understand that I would pay the rest of the taxes to them after I was awarded  the check from Publisher Clearing House.  I ask him if he knew what time it was in California.  He didn't know, but he could have someone at my door as long as it was before ten in the morning.  I told him that I knew it was a scam and that he wasn't going to get any money from me.  I had called Publishers Clearing House and they told me it was a scam and that the phone number he gave to me was in Jamaica.  He called me a fool and stupid to be turning down the money from  him.  I didn't talk to the right person at PCH.  Right!!!  Once again, I thought that was the end of it.  But, in the last two days, Mr. Billy Johnson has called me four times at odd times.  I have not picked up the phone to his calls.  Because he has continued to call me and that he described the plants I have in front of my door and on my patio, I made a police report.  I encourage anyone who receives these calls to report them to the police or sheriffs office, they do keep records on the activity and can give you an "event number".  Anyway, it was interesting to have him tell me that our government would accept roughly five thousand dollars as taxes on five and one half million dollars.

I just got a call from 1-876-447-4430 with the PCH scam thing.  They asked me to call 1-876-390-9415.  My phone is pre-paid and will not make international calls...so I knew that if I tried and it didn't work this was a scam.  About 2 minutes later, I got another call from "unknown" number and the same guy from the first call asked, "Did you call my manager?"  I said, "No.  Nice try with the scam."  And hung up.    People beware!  If it's too good to be true, it usually is.

Steve,  As I have mentioned in many of my posts, how these woolly headed beasts came to initially call us, is still, to a great extent, unknown. I do know that one particular colony of these rodents is using an automatic dialer (aka robo-caller.) If anyone at the number called picks up, then that number is redialed later by a live rodent. Clearly though, if they know some of our personal information, then they cannot simply be dialing numbers at random.  They must be working off a lead list and, quite frankly, are potentially more dangerous.

Another poster (if I could recall who, I would give him appropriate credit,) posited that these chiggers work a particular area code at a time. Since the success of this scam, to a large part, depends on secrecy (think about all the intended victims who were told they should not tell anyone about their "good fortune,") saturating a particular region/area code does make tactical sense.

By including our area codes (and mine, by the way, is 619,) we can validate this theory AND, more importantly, we can bring greater resources to bear in that particular region of our country.  Thank you for your help.

This is definitely a scam, when I asked him where he was from and he said America, I asked originally where are you from, your accent is unique. He cleared his throat and said he doesn't feel well, that's why he sounds different. Lmao. Then hung up, don't know what their game is, but don't fall for it, or give them any information.

I'm assuming he got my number off of a recent Craigslist posting for my lost dog. He called and said that I won some prize/$$ or something couldn't make out with all the hacking he was doing. He said "don't you remember signing up for it at the grocery store (didn't give the name of the store)?" He called me by a different name (because I did not have my name on the posting) and I told him that I was not Mrs. Johnston (again I think that is what he said). He then asked me what my name was. I refused to give it to him so he hung up on me.

Nick,  we have learned that there is a hierarchy among these foul smelling chiggers who are calling using the "PCH" variant of this scam. The first black stained rodent who calls can barely speak English and is reading from a script. Its job is solely to hook you. If you hang up quickly, as you did, it merely moves on to the next number - the next potential victim. If it thinks it has you hooked, it will pass your number on to a "manager," who is essentially a more skilled con artist who will call you back. That is why this woolly headed little beast knew you were too smart to fall for his crap.  When these vile creatures call again - and they will - please:

1) Answer the phone and try to prolong the call (ask it to repeat information: its name, its location, etc.)
2) Frustrate the caller (if it appears to be in a hurry, talk even more slowly. If it talks slowly, speak rapidly. A frustrated chigger makes mistakes.)
3) Determine exactly what information it has about you (usually it is just your phone number and perhaps your first name. Unfortunately, in one variant of this scheme this vile creature DOES have most of your personal information.)
4) Try to extract as much information from it as possible (there are MANY variants of this scam currently active e.g. "Green Dot Card," Moneygram) and, most importantly
5) Record the call and share that information here in this forum. Please include your area code - JUST your area code - along with your posting name.

Thanks
Nick

Called today with similar story above.  He actually claimed he was the UPS driver for PCH, wanted me to write down a number.  I simply asked if it was legit.  He said 'of course it is', and so I asked if there was any way to verify it.  He then said 'forget it, i'm not begging you to take the prize.'

DO NOT return the call from someone calling from a 876 area code.
This is not a toll free "800" number, it is the international long distance code for the island nation of Jamaica. You are charged international and long distance rates for calling this number. Other international/long distance area codes are 809, 284, and 649.
http://www.att.net/smartcontrols-809AreaCode

Scammers use these number to not only try to scam you out of money, but also sting you with high phone call rates.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0119-jam ... ng-us-consumers

Also:
It is a scam:
http://info.pch.com/consumer-information/fraud-protection

They never require any money, purchases, taxes, fees, or deposits of any kind to get your prize.

Publishers Clearing House DOES NOT call, email, FAX, mail, any advanced notice that you have won.

"If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to represent PCH, or claiming to be one of our employees,  and asked to send or wire money (for any reason whatsoever, including taxes); or send a pre-paid gift card or Green Dot Moneypak card in order to claim a sweepstakes prize ? DON?T!  It?s a SCAM. If you are sent a check, told it?s a partial prize award, and asked to cash it and send a portion back to claim the full prize award, DON?T.  The check is fake, but the SCAM is real!

Publishers Clearing House does not operate this way and would NEVER ask for money to claim a prize award.  PCH employees would never contact you personally or in advance to notify you of a prize award.  Our prize awards are presented just the way you see in our popular TV commercials, ?live and in person? by our Prize Patrol, with balloons, champagne and check in hand - - and with no advance notification!"

I, too, just received a call on my cell phone from someone claiming I had won cash and a new car from PCH.  He asked if I remembered entering, and I told him it had been a long time since I had.  He said, "Yes, this is from a contest a long time ago."  He gave me his manager's name and number to call -- James Monoley, 876-484-2221, ext. 9; however, the call wouldn't go through.  I knew this was a scam.  The "manager" then called ME and asked for my full name and address so they could deliver my car.  I told him I would not give that information, as I did not believe this was legitimate.  He hung up!
