They called me about a legit debt which I'm trying to pay off. Since I work as a freelance writer my income is sporadic, so I've been making small payments whenever possible. Now, they've decided they won't take partial payments. My plan is to keep calling and leaving a message on their service. That way if they do sue me, I can prove I've been making an effort. It should be interesting to see how they respond. I've requested paperwork from them on multiple occasions and have yet to receive it.

Says he has time sensitive information for someone other than myself. Says they need to call a "FIRM" within 24 hours. The call was blocked, so the only number I have is the one that was left on my answering machine. He stated to call, his name was "Brian". Kept saying the firm, but gave no name of the firm. We do not have a checking account, and haven't in years. Scam artist.

My husband received a call on his cell phone asking for me. Left 877-266-6957 and a file #. I called the number and got what I was told was the answering service for a large building with several companies. He acted very dumb until I gave him the file number, then all the sudden he knew who had called and wanted to talk to me. I told him that knew that this call was not legit and I was reporting the number. He hung up on me.

Herman Edwards - former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back and pro football coach.   Don't worry about the call.  Read some of the other comments in this thread and see how a scammer works.  That "time is running out" will probably be followed by "the police/sheriff are coming".  These people(?) are probably in India and are constantly making the same threats to many persons - many of whom own no debts.

After doing a search of this number I came across this site and I thank all of you who posted about your experience it reconfirms to me that it is not legitimate.  I received a call from a "restricted" number this evening.  The first red flag is that the caller did not say who he was or where he was calling from, there was absolutely no identifying information left in the voicemail.  The second red flag was he used my nickname and not my legal name that goes on all of my documents or anything I would owe any money to and my name is not on my voicemail so he would not have been able to get it from that.  Third red flag, despite the debt that I have accumulated, I have not received one other phone call or document (which I have received in the past) that has said there would be any legal action taken against me.  So if you (the scammer) is reading these posts, don't call me again and don't threaten me that these "lawyers" are going to do an investigation of me and all of my property! We will see how you like it if the FTC or FBI contacts you after I report the call to them!

Nope. They cannot sue you on a time-barred debt. A recent lawsuit filed by the FTC against Asset Asseptance (another bottom feeder) confirms this:

Watch what you're doing with time-barred debts
By Lesley Fair
January 30, 2012 - 10:56am

Of course, people are responsible for their debts.  However, at a certain point, how much time has passed becomes an affirmative defense under state law and creditors can?t prevail in court.  But what happens if a payment is made on a time-barred debt?  A consumer can really get clocked ? because in many states the debt can be revived if a person makes a payment or says in writing that they intend to.  The FTC has announced a $2.5 million settlement with Asset Acceptance, LLC, for allegedly breaking the law in how it tried to collect time-barred debts.

Michigan-based Asset Acceptance buys unpaid debts from credit card companies, health clubs, companies that provide telecom or utility service, and other debt buyers.  Getting the debts for pennies on the dollar, the company targets accounts other collectors have pursued unsuccessfully and are more than a year past due.  The problem, of course, is that if a debt collector tells somebody they owe money and demands payment, it may create the misleading impression that the company can collect in court.  That?s not the case with time-barred debts.

A law enforcement action filed by the Department of Justice on the FTC?s behalf charges that Asset Acceptance pursued debts ? including time-barred debts ? in ways that violated the law.  Among other things, the complaint alleges that the company:
?claimed that consumers owed money when Asset Acceptance didn?t have proof to back it up;
?failed to disclose that debts were too old to be legally enforceable or that a partial payment would restart the clock;
?failed to give consumers verification of a debt when they asked for it;
?provided information to credit reporting agencies it knew ? or had reasonable cause to know ? was inaccurate;
?didn?t notify consumers in writing that it passed negative information on to credit reporting agencies;
?didn?t conduct reasonable investigations when it got a notice of dispute from a credit reporting agency;
?illegally told third parties about people?s debts; and
?used illegal debt collection practices.

In addition to the $2.5 million civil penalty, the settlement puts provisions in place to protect consumers going forward.  For example, when dealing with debt it knows or should know is time-barred, Asset Acceptance must disclose to the consumer that it won?t sue on the debt and ? assuming it?s the case ? it has to tell people that it may report nonpayment to the credit bureaus.  Once it has made that disclosure, Asset Acceptance can?t sue, even if the consumer makes a partial payment that otherwise would restart the limitations clock.

The order also prohibits Asset Acceptance from making material misrepresentations about debts;  from ?parking? debt on a consumer?s credit report when it has failed to notify them in writing;  and from violating the FTC Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in the ways alleged in the complaint."

To Timothy Scranton
First of all, I am glad you took care of buisness. I must admit, After doing a dig into Larry and found out that he is out of CA and that his real name is Jesse Chambers. This cat is a peice of work.There are other post about this opperation. He is a Zombie Debt collector.

NO ONE CAN SERVE YOU THESE KINDS OF PAPERS WITHOUT A COURT FILING.

Go to your local        "courts.(your state).gov       and search for that file, or just search for your name.
Tim, As for your case, monitor that bank account for further withdrawls. They are know to do this. BTW was your debt over 6 years old? if so, They can not file with the courts. The case becomes "Time Barred" in most states.

Pay your debts if you owe them. But when these types of cats call, insist on see in writing all documents related to the case. No documents, No payment. Agree to Nothing again Agree to NOTHING , and don't let these cats scare you. In the last couple of years these types of people bought over 70 BILLION dollars in bad or fraudulent debt. Now they are trying to find ways to collect from poor unsuspecting people. Wether they owe it or not. Even if they yell at you, are insistent, or threated leagle action. Don't be scared. Make them disclose in writing any and all info they have in your mater. Agree to nothing. Remember, burden of proof is with them not you. If they do send you papers, Spend the 40 to 50 dollars and chat with an attorney. Remember to report the mater to the FTC, FBI, and your States Attorney General. There are specific rules they need to follow accordance to the Federal Trade Commision's section 803b (if memory serve correctly). Look it up on the web. you will find it. End of the day Don't let them scare you. No one is going to throw you in jail because of old debt. Good luck be informed, and don't let them get to you.....Gee

I spoke with someone named Jordan at this company.  They had legitimate information but what I think is going on is these are debt collectors.  They buy old written off accounts from lenders or whoever and collect on them.  They will lie and do what ever to get information and money out of you.

Be aware that a legitimate, law abiding debt collection agency would already have your current address.  Remember - no proof that you owe a debt to the caller = no debt owed.  Never pay anyone who refuses to mail you documentation proving you owe the debt and that they can claim and collect said debt in your state.

Report the call to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General.

No, the people complaining DON'T have a debt - and why the heck should they pay a scammer?

If a caller is legitimate and abides by federal law, they will have no problem MAILING proof (not emailing or faxing) that the person owes the debt to them.  Just because a caller says they are "X Company" doesn't make them so.  Anyone who receives a call saying that they'll be served can take it that the caller is a scammer, or debt collector operating in violation of the FDCPA, because NO ONE gives a heads up that you'll be served.  The court process server just shows up, papers in hand.

Nice try, but no cigar.

I received a call from someone claiming to send me paperwork I needed to sign and wanted me to "Verify my address" I never gave them that info because I asked "what is this all about?" and they told me I needed to get in contact with the company for more information and then gave me the CB# 877-266-6957 and a reference # as well. The best part is the people complaining are the people with debt that hide from paying it. I was contacted by a Gary Jackson from doc delivery and I called in spoke to a Larry Barnes who at first wasma jerk ended up clarifying the debt I owed made a great deal for me to settle out for less than I owed and I took care of it. So please be aware there are a lot of people they help.

They called my cell, then my office, then my husband all within fifteen minutes of each other. They also left a message with one of my co-workers with a case number etc. I'm thinking these idiots have no clue about the law and discussing someone's supposed debt with anyone other than the party who owes the debt. All calls also left the 24 hour threat.
How on earth did they get all these phone numbers?

I got a call today from this number looking for my ex-sister-in-law.  I let my answering machine take the message.  Company said they were looking for her and gave the last address she lived at, claiming they had papers to serve and call back within 24 hours or further legal action would be taken.  They went to some trouble to reach me - she's my ex-husband's sister who  is married so we don't even  have the same last name.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

A Jason Locke has been calling a friend of ours, my in-laws, and our home looking for me.  He too says he has time sensitive documents and went as far as threatening my husband on July 26,2013.  We have been receiving these calls for YEARS!!!!!  I notified our local police department and called an attorney this morning and have been told that it's a scam.  The next time they call we were told to tell them that their company is being skip traced and that we have contacted the FBI AND THE CALL IS BEING RECORDED!!!  It is so sad that no one can do anything to stop these CRIMINALS from harassing innocent people.

I received a call on July 26, 2013 from "Eric Gray" from a "Document Delivery" service at 877-266-6957.  He threatened me with "time sensitive documents" to be served and needed information on my property and address. I received a similar call from 877-274-5102 on June 25, almost exactly one month prior, which said basically the same thing.  Both times they left messages on my machine with my name and address and a case number.  My adult son heard the recent one and he is still unset about me not taking care of it even though I told him it is a dirty scam.  We have to report these calls because they are very unsettling especially to seniors like me.
