Got a scam letter today claiming some computer tapes containing my information were lost while being moved to an off-site facility, and it gives this number as their customer service line.

The letter also claims that this is the second mailing and the first letter came back to them due to incorrect address information. It's a pretty clever scam letter, they even give you info on Equifax and TransUnion for a credit report...but of course who would choose those when you can enroll in the scam's "Triple Alert" which supposedly gives you $25,000 to enroll in identify theft insurance.

Ok, I fully support people being careful about phishing attempts, because such a letter COULD be used via USMail.

But the easy way to authenticate such a letter is to CALL the company, NOT using the phone # that came on the letter.  Just look up BNY Mellon (bnymellon.com has a Verisign-authenticated certificate), get the main customer service #, and call them to authenticate the letter.

That's what I did, they said it was legit, and they gave me the same # that was on the letter (877-289-0136) to call for more details.

So, it's legit.  Don't get all paranoid when it's that easy to do due-diligence and validate it yourself.

Event Reminder
I received a letter from BNY Mellon in reference to the tape query about personal information on tapes being lost.  The letter stated that I could get 24 free months of credit monitoring.  I tried signing up through the
web site and was told that I have to call 1-877-289-0136 in order to finish the enrollment process.  I don't understand what is the point if it is free why do I have to call in order to get this benefit.  I think it is a scam and they are not really offering free credit monitoring.  I have an account with them and I think that they should be sued.

I just called Mellon directly at their Pittsburgh office.  My advice is to call a company directly to make sure it's not a phishing letter.  She said it was real and also gave me another toll free number.

Oh, heck no! The Attorney General of Connecticut says you'll be asked your Social Security number.  Ain't gonna happen.  I'll take my chances.  I don't even know why we received these letters because we have no direct account with them and it could only be our Florida Retirement System pensions.

I also received the letter today, 9-24-08, with the toll-free number for the Investor Care Response Team listed as 1-877-289-0136.  I decided to call BNY Mellon directly and inquire about the letter.  They told me that it was  legitimate and authentic.

I called the above number and it now seems on the square to me it prompts you how to protect the acccount. The voice speaking for BNY Mellon services sounds like one that I have heard before for them or when voting by phone. It's pathetic that something that was to simplify life for us has become so threatening.  I wish computers were never invented.

I am in Nevada and received the same letter from BNY.  Did you find out if it's a scam?  Wouldn't they protect our acct automatically if this were true just to protect us?  Please let me know if you have heard any more on this.  Thank you.

This is legit googling the phone number brings up a whole lot of stories including Conn States Attn General is investigating.
Initial thought was 4 million names lost in Feb.  now it is 12.5 names. be sure to sign up for the free credit service the more people that do the more it costs Mellon which serves them right.

I think that if BNY Mellon is in on the scam, then it's bigger than all of us put together.  We should probably put on our tinfoil hats and get rid of all electronic devices.

I did some research on this company. If you call the number 877-278-3451 it will explain more about the missing tapes and about the letter. Always be careful when your giving information out. Also the program they are offering can be obtained for free. Just call your local Credit Bureau for more information on Fraud.

I received same letter on September 16,2008. The Letter had a date in it of August 27,2008. We new it didn't take 20 days for mail to arrive to our address. We, also, haven't had any business with Melllon in over 12 years.
I suspect this is an attempt to get personal infomation out us. Could be a scam....ie... If this is really Mellon, then they already have our correct names, addresses and personal information and the real Mellon would be able to take the necesaary action to protect our account without us ever contacting them.

I also received this notice from BNY Mellon and caled the phone number for more details.  The "investor care response team" member knew nothing, and the whole thing seemed highly suspicious.  I had a BNY account but it is now a Chase account, so I called Chase.  They seemed very uncertain about the matter also.  It really sounds like a scam!!!

It's a scam, a good blend of truth and lies and aimed at identity theft and or purchase of a credit monitoring service.  I almost beleived but  the web sites that I'm supposed to submit my info to as written on the letter does not exist.  That is what saved me.

I just got this letter as well. It says 24 months and 25K. Thing is, I don't won securities, have never had securities, nor am I a participant in any organization's equity compensation plan -- at least not that I know of. Anyone know if this is legit?
