Got a call this morning from Rebecca Pierce. Supposedly calling from the county office about coming to serve me two summons today. She had my name part of my address and the last 4 of my social. When I questioned her about what it was about, she said she didn't know because it was a sealed envelope but then gave me this number, 877-314-4247 and a case number and an extension to call to find out more and maybe she wouldn't have to deliver it. She asked me if I knew what it was about and I said no because I don't have anything against me.  I asked again for her name and who she is with. She repeated her name and that she was with the county (which I didn't believe) and I started to ask another question a different she hung up. I was guessing it must have to do with some supposed debt but haven't received anything in the mail, etc about it. I looked up this number and after seeing all the comments went to check the court listing by the case number and by my name and there is nothing outstanding. So I know this is not true. She was very nice about it. I haven't tried to call the number back directly and won't waste my time since if they want a response from me I will only deal with people in writing when it comes to money owed. When you are actually getting served by the courts they don't "give you a courtesy call"  before they show up at your door!

Received a vm from "unknown". VM stated the caller was an investigator and they are coming to my house or job today to serve me for a case opened against me. Said I must call them before 3pm to avoid this. Caller said they were hired by a CCR? He read the last 4 of my social and my address (address wasn't even correct!) and said to be notified he would be at my home today. He left phn# 877-314-4247.

I just got a call from an unknown caller, I normally don't answer my phone  with unknown calls, but this time I did, the woman at the end asked if I was so and so and read off the last four digits of my SS# and I said yes. Then said she had file on her desk with a number of a law office and gave me that too, and also gave me a case number. What do I do? I asked her if she knew what this was about and she said no that she was just the carrier?  Any advice would be grateful?

I received a voicemail today from someone named Michael Moore stating he is a private locator for the county that I live in.  He rattled off the last 4 of my social and said that if a response isn't received to confirm my correct address in 24 hours, they will be sending someone to each of the addresses that they have on file (2 home and 1 possible work). He provided me a case number along with a contact number 877-314-4247. I searched the county website for the case number, and even looked under my name and found nothing.  I won't be returning the call - I don't like to be threatened.  Let them serve me the paperwork

I received a call yesterday from a man stating he worked for the local courts doing locate work and that he had 2 different home addresses for me and a possible employer, he knew my full name and my approximate age and that if I did not contact him back within 24 hours of his call he would send people to all addresses listed to serve court paperwork. He said his name so fast I was barely able to get it and the company name I believe was CR Associates. When I looked up this information online, it looks like it is all a scam. The voicemail was very threatening. He left no local phone # only this 877-314-4247 with a case #. When I called this phone number I told them that I did not appreciate the threatening phone call, they were very rude and disconnected the call. I called the local courts where I live, they had never heard of this man, nor did they have the paperwork on their desk he said they had in his message and they had nothing pending under my name.

Debt Collector
Started I owed money from 2005 for a payday loan. I informed them that the statue of limitation in the state of Texas is seven years and they're trying to collect a debt and threaten legal action on a debt that is past the statue limitation therefore they are committing a crime and I will be forwarding the information to the Atty. Gen. of Texas Greg Abbot the FTC And FCC. The guy on the phone acted as if his phone went dead said hello hello hello and hung up :)

Yes, I just got a message saying it's a legal matter and had my social I don't know who they are want give any information and said I will be having someone to come to my home if I don't called them back 24-48 hours, well let them, I don't deal with threats and there are laws to protect us when being harassed and threaten, especially when you don't know who they are. Stop! This is horrible to called and leave threatening messages on people phones.

I got a voice mail today from a woman who said she was with the county and that there had been a case filed with my name and social security number. Didn't leave her name or the county in which the case had been filed. Said she was calling to give me a courtesy call before she showed up at my home or place of employment. Said that if I had questions for me or my attorney to call the company that filed the claim directly at 877-314-4247. I immediately came home and saw all of the reviews for this phone number, also did a records search for the county that I currently live in and the county that I moved away from and found nothing. Hope this helps

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

Upon doing research I have learned this company goes by 2 names:
Check & Credit Reporting, Inc.
CCR Legal

Address: 3804 Union Rd, Ste 155, Cheektowaga, NY 14225

They have an (F) rating with the BBB and have had 109 complaints filed against them (under the first name).

In 2011 New York State filed charges against them for illegal debit collection practices:

NYS vs Check & Credit Reporting, Inc.
Date of Action: 2/11/2011

In February 2011, the New York State Attorney General announced a settlement with the owner of the Check & Credit Reporting, Inc.  According to the AG, lawsuits and complaints filed against the company allege that they improperly called consumers at their places of employment, threatened consumers with arrest, imprisonment, garnishment of wages, and freezing bank accounts.

The company owner must pay a penalty and must take significant steps to clean up their business practices.

I reported them to the Attorney General's office in my state (because caller was impersonating an investigator, they threatened to come in person to my home and work) and they advised me to NOT pay this company directly. Even if you have an outstanding debt, go directly to the ORIGINAL company owed and pay them. This company has complaints with other AG's offices and the BBB for taking people's money and NEVER RESOLVING THE DEBT from their credit reports or giving them paid in full letters. These complaints are as current as 2013!!!! Guess they didn't learn their lesson in 2011.
