Received a text msg from "1234" on my Sprint cellphone at 7:54 pm, Oct 2: NETSPEND Alert: Your CARD has been DEACTIVATED. Please contact us at 877-501-4834 to REACTIVATE your CARD.
On August 31 I received another from "17029910115@fmbbank.com" with this message: This is an message from your Federal Credit Union. Your card is deactivated, to reactivate call 866-992-5541.
Realizing both were scams I responded to neither. I am ticked about this tho and will complain to Sprint.

BE READY, THESE SCAMMERS I THINK ARE FROM CHINA. THEY ARE RE-SENDING MESSAGES WITH DIFFERENT PHONE NUMBERS TO CALL AGAIN, BUT "NETSPEND" IS ON THEIR TAIL AND KEEPS DISCONNECTING IT. IF YOU GAVE OUT YOUR NUMBER TO SOME COMPANIES IN CHINA OR IF YOUR NUMBER HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO CHINESE COMPANIES OR WORLDWIDE, YOU WILL GET THESE MESSAGES. DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY OF YOUR CARD NUMBERS, IT IS NOT FROM "NETSPEND",ITS A SCAM TO GET YOUR CARD NUMBERS AND PASSWORDS.

My daughter got the NETSPEND with a different number...after an online chat with a Sprint Tech, I deleted it from her phone...they are aware & have the message & number sent to my 10 year old's phone...we have 3 other phones that haven't gotten it yet...the Sprint Tech said the 1234 is a 3rd party code sent to phones like the codes sent from Sprint when we get texts from them (when downloading ringers, etc.)..you are usually charged for 3rd party texts but we were not charged for this as he checked the account. He blocked 3rd party texting from her phone but that would have meant I could not send her ringers/wallpapers/games from Sprint either...it's sad when our cells (on the do not call registry) get "spam"...I asked them to report it to their security division and work on a solution. What ever you do...don't call the number...I never go to free sites to get ringers, etc. as that is usually how they get your number too! It has to be a random dialer because my other 3 phones didn't get it yet...we need to write our State representatives about this issue as I am sure it isn't just the Sprint Customers having this issue...I suggested they develop a specific code for Sprint and come up with a way to block individual 3rd party codes (you can block text numbers from your MySprint account online, but this is different & blocking 3rd party will block YOU from downloading to your phone as well as the "spammers"...

I called the number last night to see if I could speak to someone, with no joy. Tried this morning and the number has been disconnected. Really upset with this. Called the actual Netspend and had them run my name but not SS# just to verify i had no account with them. Oh well!

My wife and I got the same message with a slightly different 877 number to call back. We live in 512 area code and are sprint customers.
It's a scam pretty clearly... but what *IS* the scam? Doesn't seem to do anything other than be annoying.
one pissed off person 2009-10-04 03:09:12 Unknown
Same BS message from netspend. Contacting sprint right now to find out what is going on. Also 512 area code. I never heard of netspend till I got the text today.
B 2009-10-03 19:20:38 Unknown

Anon 2009-10-03 18:09:21 Unknown

This is not a NetSpend authorized communication. Of those of you that received it, are any of you NetSpend customers?
NetSpend is based in Austin, TX, but is an online bank.
Thank you.

I got this message and took swift action to reactivate my card. I called the phone number, and a friendly operator quickly took my information on my existing check and savings account as well as my personal information and credit card numbers in order to ensure that all my accounts were safe. I am very much at-ease after the nice people on the phone promised me everything is okay.

hi 2009-10-03 00:50:57 Unknown
i just received 2 texts from this number within a half hour.
This happened a day after servicing my phone at the sprint store.
Sprint is definitely involved, knowingly or unknowingly.
