These people called my place of employment and said if I did not call them back in a hour they was going to send the sheriff out to pick me up.  I called back and told them to send me proof of the debt and they said I would get proof when the sheriff came and picked me up.  These people are so stupid, no one goes to jail for owing something.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Debt Collector
I received a call from this number about 20 minutes ago at my place of emplyment.  They were threatening to send a sheriff's deputy to arrest me.  When I started to ask questions they were very vague with their answers.  The lady on the phone said she worked for the Processing and Summons Division of the County I live in.  She would not give a name and I was finally able to get the name of a company from her.  She said the place is called "Creditors".  I have never heard of them and never received anything in writing from them.  They said they sent a summons to my residence.  Then she said it was a letter that said summons on the envelope.  I did not receive either one.  I do not pay anyone who cannot show proof of the debt.

I also received several calls from this number. The representative I spoke to refused to give me their location.  He refused to tell me which attorneys he worked for and when I told him I could not locate his company when I tried to research it, he didn't want to help. I asked him for a web site or some way of identifying that his company is legit, he told me the people who sign his checks tell him not to. And that he doesn't care whether I pay the debt or not because he makes more money if we go to court. I tried looking the number up on the BBB website, nothing.  And since he regused to give me an address I cannot get any info other than he works for attorneys NOT a collection agency.

Debt Collector
Also, maybe if everyone who is getting harrassed by this number filed a complaint with the FCC they would get put out of business or at least change their practices.

I am the same anonymous that posted about this number calling my husband.  They also called my parents house.  I am beyond livid at these people. The only identifying information they gave was that they were from the legal department. According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, they are supposed to "Identify themselves and notify the consumer, in every communication, that the communication is from a debt collector, and in the initial communication that any information obtained will be used to effect collection of the debt. So I think I will indeed be filing a claim with the FCC.  I have the message saved on my phone to back up my claim.

I told my husband to request everything in writing (who they are collecting for, etc) and not to give any credit card information over the phone.  I figure it's a scam.  They need not threaten me with knowing where I live or work.  I mean, if you have the money, you can find out anything you want on someone. I'm sure that they have bought a list from some company somewhere and trying to collect on their behalf.    But until I'm certain of who they are, I will NOT be sending them a dime.

This number called my cell(showed up as unknown)asking for my husband.  I hung up. They immediately called back. I didn't answer and just let it go to voicemail. At no point during the message did they identify who they were.  They just said they had 3 complaints filed against my husband and that he needed to contact the legal department.
They said that they knew his place of employment(they gave the name) and our home address.  They also said that if he didn't call back, they would send the documents to his employer.  If I find out who they are, I will be filing a complaint with the FCC.
