Yes, call an attorney.  It is illegal for them to threaten you.  If they are going to sue you that can tell you that but then they have to follow through or they are breaking the law.  Also, debt collection companies will usually negotiate down the fee owed not inflate it.  I would call an attorney ASAP.  Just google an attorney who handles this type of work and you may get your money back plus some.
I sued a collection agency once and won $2,500.00 Dollars.

This collection agency continues to call my phone number +1year after repeatedly telling them that the person they are looking for does not live at this address/phone number.  I have asked them several times to stop calling here.

Robert Ve of GLR Group just called me regarding my girlfriend. He was smart enough not to ask for her phone number (which he wouldn't have gotten).

He gave me 562-697-7237 x218 as his direct number for her to call him back to discuss a "pending legal matter".

Well, I got the email offer letter, and have made the payment. Working with Herb Aston at ext 217 has been a pleasure. He was able to relate to my situation, and with all the phone-tag we'd been playing since our original call a week ago- I feel he was very patient and professional with me. I can honestly say, this has been the best experience with a collection agency I've ever had.
I did confirm that the CEO who blogged on this topic is in fact a CEO for this company, and I have his information down. I have taken detailed notes on every call, email, and all info I felt necessairy to keep if they dont hold to their end of the deal. All has seemed legit thus far-I will let you know if that changes (: it feels good to finally have my only credit card debt off my conscience! Thank you Herb!

I got a call about a month ago from a man from this GLR Group (cant remember his name), who was extreemly rude and unprofessional, to say the very least. He refused to set up a $50-$100 month payment plan, stating he would just sue me for my US Bank debt, and garnish mine and/or my husband's paychecks up to 25%, which would be more than the payment plan I was going to offer. I simply told the man if he wasnt going to be realistic, then feel free to do what he felt neccessairy. He hung up on me, and that was that.
About a week ago, I got another call from a Herb Aston ext#217 from GLR Group. He was not the same guy that called me before, and took a completly different approach to the situation. He asked me about my prior call, and why it didnt work out. he then offered me two very generous payment options, one spread out over 21 months for the full accrued debt, the other a one lump sum for 1/2 of the accrued amt. I checked my credit report to see if the amount he gave me seemed appropriate, and it was. He also said if i took the lump sum option, he would provide me with  the offer in writing, stating the company would remove the debt from my credit entirely, and it would take approx 30-90 days for the update to take place with the 3 credit reporting agencies....
I have yet to make the payment, and am still a little hesitant..as I have nothing in writing yet-as I just managed to gather the funds today, and dont have anything in writing yet. He offered to send me an email offer letter today..is that still a legal document? im confused, and want this to be over!

Under the TCPA, a consumer has a right to file a lawsuit and recover $500 for each call that violates the TCPA. The TCPA can also be used in conjunction with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in some situations.

Generally, the TCPA does not apply to debt collectors making collection calls to debtors. However, if you are subjected to calls from a debt collector and you are not the debtor, you may file a lawsuit against the debt collector under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and the TCPA.

This right was recently recognized by Judge Legrome D. Davis in a case called Watson v. NCO Group, Inc.  NCO Group is a debt collector that uses automated prerecorded collection calls.  In this case, Mr. Watson alleged he was getting hundreds of calls from NCO Group after he got a new phone number. Mr. Watson claimed he owed no debt to NCO Group, Inc.  Mr. Watson filed suit under both the FDCPA and TCPA.

David Israel, defense lawyer for NCO, argued that the TCPA should not apply to debt collectors.  Judge Davis rejected the argument made by David Israel. The judge ruled that Mr. Watson had a right to sue NCO Group Inc under the TCPA for $500 for each call.  Judge Davis wrote;

[The] Court is convinced that a non-debtor's rights are in fact violated when he is subjected to repeated annoying and abusive debt collection calls that he remains powerless to stop.

Judge Davis' ruling was based upon his interpretation that collection calls to non-debtors violate the privacy rights provided by the TCPA.

So what can you do if you receive "wrong number" calls from debt collectors?

1. Sign up for the Do-Not-Call registry.
2. Save the calls captured by your voice mail or answering machine.
3. Contact a consumer lawyer.

Dear Sean Howard from GLR Group - please stop calling me daily on a blocked number.  Your message that you have questions about an address on Abbot Kinney has nothing to do with me.  I looked up Abbot Kinney and the street is located in Venice Beach, California.  I have never lived in Venice Beach.  I live in New York.  You know that because you or someone you know left a handwritten note on my car windshield in New York and GLR got my number because I called to see if it was a mistake or you are a stalker.  I understand GLR Group is in the business to collect money but hire a professional service to find people who owe you money.  Don't harass people who don't owe you any money or use them as a free alternative to track someone down.  Thank you.

A few years ago I rented a house directly from a landlord instead of going through an agency.  My company relocated me out of state so I had to break my lease early.  My company offered to buy the lease out up to six months.  I believed this was plenty of time for the landlord to find my replacement and I offered to help or pay any additional costs to find another tenant.  The landlord was upset because the previous tenant did the same thing but he agreed to take the six month buy out and charged me for his tenant search.  He found someone so I thought the matter was behind us.  Later, my savings account was drained and someone took out new credit cards in my name.  It's called identity theft.  I lost $30,000 from my savings (goodbye wedding fund) and I was stuck paying $100,000 in credit card debt (goodbye low interest rate on first home loan).  I hired a private detective to find the thief because the credit card companies and the police couldn't help me.  The only advice I got was to buy LifeLock so this wouldn't happen to me again.  A year later the PI realized it was my landlord who had all my banking and credit information from when I moved in the house.  You would think the bank would return my money and the credit card companies would go after him for the charges.  No.  I have to pay for everything, prove he committed fraud and sue him for reimbursement.   If he doesn't pay, I have to take him to court to collect.  I have to go through the proper channels.  NEVER can I call him at home, at work, go by his house, confront him, call his family or friends, do anything to discredit his character or hurt his credit.  I can't even do this if I win my case.  If I do, he could win a restraining order against me (goodbye good record) and a harassment lawsuit (hello another bill).  I can't do anything but fix my credit, pay these bills and hope to get pennies on the dollar from him.  IF THIS IS THE STANDARD I'M HELD TO WHEN SOMEONE OWES ME MONEY THEN WHY IS A COLLECTION AGENCY LIKE G.L.R. GROUP NOT HELD TO THE SAME STANDARD?  And you want to know the funny part, G.L.R. is probably the ONLY group I don't owe money to.

P.S.  I word to the wise, if you receive a mysterious handwritten note on your windshield make sure you call them on a blocked number.  I called the G.L.R. Group thinking the handwritten note was at best a mistake or at worst an unknown stalker.  I found out it was a collection agency.  Because I didn't block my number when I inquired about the mysterious note that read "Thursday 5:23 PM 1-562-697-5037 x 112 Questions about your address" now Sean Howard from G.L.R. is calling me.  After reading the posts on this site, I want to answer or return his call about about as much as I want to walk into a bar and pick a fight with the toughest, meanest, most irrational drunk in the room.  If you happen to read this, Mr. Howard, please send me a professional letter like you work for a real business.  I do not answer to handwritten notes on my car or callers from unknown numbers who won't leave messages stating their business.  Mr. Howard, I will report you to the proper authorities if your inappropriate and illegal behavior continues.

You know I have had the same thing happen to me.  I got a call from a private number asking for my boyfriend.  I told them that I was not around him at the moment and if they wanted to leave a message for him.  She gave her name, which I cannot remember, and that she worked for GLR.  I asked her how she got my number and she said through paperwork.  The thing is is that my bf has never put my number on any information of his, so what I am wondering is how they got my number??  I told her that she would have to locate another number because this is not a good one to get in contact with him.  Then she told me that she couldn't take my number off the list because this is the only contact she had for him.  It is not a contact for him it is my cell number and I don't want to be bothered with this kind of stuff!!  Still she refused to take my number off of their list.  After that I googled GLR and found this site so I knew who exactly was calling since they were probably going to call again.

So I get a call back from Jason, who is a supervisor, and he told me that he needed to have my bf call him.  He was very polite so I got in contact with my bf and told him to call.  When he did GLR told him about a US Bank account that wasn't paid.  My bf told them that he has never used US Bank to open an account.  They then tried to verify his information and they had the wrong DOB, but they had the right SSN.  He told GLR that it sounded like someone else opened the account under his name and SSN but under a different DOB.  They simply ignored it and told him too bad and he had to pay it.  Then the threats about court came and all that junk.

They are still calling me about it after I keep telling them it is not his debt and my number needs to be taken off.  Can anyone help me with information on what to do next??

You know I agree with paying the debt that you owe, but if you find yourself in a financial bind, (losing your job, etc), you shouldn't have to deal with such rude people.  But if you are just making debt and not planning on taking care of it, shame on you.  I know that they are doing their job by collecting debt but they could do it in a much better manner than threatening.  Especially when it is not a person's debt such as the instance with my bf.
why bother?

The company called me a little over a year ago. I asked for validation of the debt. They asked if I was saying it wasn't mine. I replied that I wasn't sure, because they could've ran a credit check on me to get that information. They said they would validate it and send it to my home address which I gave them. I said if they validated it, then we could work out what I was going to pay. At this point she started laughing at me, and a very rude jack*** got on the phone claiming that they "don't do partial payments. I could pay what they were asking for, or i could pay it with court fees in court, or garnishments." I told him I didn't have the ammount of money they were claiming I owed, and wouldn't pay anything untill I was sure that they owned my debt....

That was over a year ago. I haven't received anything from them. Most importantly they haven't filed anything either, (after constant messages of "if you don't call by 6, it's out of my hands). I haven't heard anything from them since for eight months now.

Look if you can pay your debts, then seek out a debt counselor and get it taken of. But don't trust this company with account numbers, or over the phone transactions. If all that you're worried about is garnishment... if you're past the statute of limitations, you're fine.

Ok George, your just plain STUPID! and apparently you don't have a problem showing it off on this blog for the world to see! Show me were I defended them ignoramous! How did me suggesting you call them turn into I'm defending them? As far as how I know about them, my brother was contacted by their office regarding a debt and I helped him pay for it. I went online to research the company before I did so. Turns out just about every collection agency is on some type of blog or other so instead of believing everything I read and since there office is only 18 miles from were I live I went down there, met them, verified it was all legit and negotiated a settlement. Happy George?? I'm sure your not as you are probaly not evolved enough to catch the jist of what I just wrote.....
