Wells Fargo will not ask for the cvv# and does not ask for your date of birth or pin#.
These asshats tried to pull this one on me this evening. I did call the # on the back of the card and the fraud investigator stated they never ask for date of birth. These criminals are inflating the accounts of individuals by filing disputes on legitimate charges they’ve made. This is only after you’ve given them your card#, cvv and othe identifying information. After the account is inflated theses crooks who have merchant account, can make ACH withdrawals from your account. When you give these crooks enough info, they can go online and pull up your bank statement.

i work with wells fargo fraud detection and i can assure you that the 888-293-7475 is a legit number. we always ask for verification information when you call us and we do use an automated system to call out to customers. and with any system, there are flaws, ie calling wrong numbers due to incorrect information on a profile. but when in doubt, always call the number on the back of the card.

This IS Wells Fargo. I received the same call and dumbly gave them the info they asked for then suddenly doubted it was legit. It took quite a bit of calling around to find the correct department within Wells Fargo through KNOWN Wells Fargo numbers. There are credit card, checking and debit/check card fraud departments and they are not interconnected so one cannot give you information about the other.

Lesson learned, if you do receive a call don't call THAT number back. Call a known number and ask them to see if someone is trying to contact you. A bit of a scare but it really was legit and they were able to reverse charges made to my account that were not from me.

Thank you, Wells Fargo and well done... however a better mechanism for identifying yourself would be appreciated.

I receive a weekly call claiming that there is a problem with my wells fargo account.  They are all automated calls that instruct me to wait for an operator.  These are defiantly phishing calls.  I closed out my wells fargo account years ago.  My kids who have never had wells fargo accounts also get these calls on their cell phones.  The caller id comes in as a variety of number such as UNAVAILABLE, 928-204-4422, 720-407-6402, and others.  Don't trust any call claiming to come from any bank, EVER!.  Always hang up and call the number on your card or bank statement.

I can confirm this IS Wells Fargo. I reported a compromised card (due to a hacked database of a company I did business with) on Monday morning, went through the Customer Service number, got a call back later that evening confirming the account had been frozen and a new number issued that I would receive in 7-10 business days - but would have to request a new PIN (and photo on the card) separately and AFTER I received the new card. I like WF because I upload a personal photo to my cc.

no you are wrong. this is a fraud company. They called from 888-644-5579 and the caller id says "unknown name". They say they are from the wellsfargo fraud dept and want your ssn and wellsfargo acct number. I called the wellsfargo number on the back of my card, and there was no fraud alert on my card.

This number is a scam.

Wells fargo themselves then tried to sell idenity protection insurance and asked me to call 877-292-6130.

This number called me and said that I had som suspicious activity on my card and my card had been frozen. This turned out to be the case when I called the number on the back of my card and learned that someone had tried to wire ALL of the money out of my account. They are just doing their job.

The number is wellsfargo's fraud prevention number.  I received a call from them, went through the entire process of getting a new card.  After I hung up I realized that I had no way of knowing that was wellsfargo.  I called the number on the back of my card and spoke with a representative who called the fraud department to double check that it was them I spoke to.  It was them and the fraud protection company they link your call to is also part of their program.

Bottom line is, anyone can write anything on these forums saying it is a scam or legit.  Call wellsfargo yourself and double check.  This is the way you can really known if it is legit or not.  Taking some random persons word from a post online who could someone trying to cover up their scam they are running is never a wise choice.  Always directly call the company and verify for yourself so you can have peace of mind that you were not just scammed.

I received a call from "Wells Fargo fraud Department" at 9:45 am asking me to return their call (it was a phone tree--press 1 if ...., press 2 if ....) due to suspicious charges on my account.  The return number was 888-293-7475 (8am-11pm Central time)
I contacted customer service from the number on the back of my card and they said I had no charges on my card.
This is a FRAUD.  Be careful!

Try this,  When I have a legitimate fraud problem, this time associated with my Mortgage Account. I call the number on my Mortgage paperwork, and they tell you to send a fax to the fraud department.  Wells Fargo security department is so "thats the answer your gonna get".  If you don't like it send me another fax....so fixed and rigid and out of touch with the real world.  By the way as far as I can tell the Fraud Prevention Department doesn't work on weekends.  So hope you don't have a serious problem on late friday night.

Got a message tonight from the same number (1-888-293-7475) and returned the call to Wells Fargo Fraud Prevention who was informing me of suspicious activity on my account.  I checked my account and there was an unauthorized charge for a couple of hundred dollars.  After speaking with a woman and having my card cancelled I noticed the number on the back of my card (as an after thought!) and discovered it was a different number. Called the number on the back to verify and was told by Customer Service Rep that it was indeed one of many WellsFargo valid numbers.  Will still be going into my branch bank tomorrow to be double sure after reading these posts.

I just got a call from this number and yes, claims to be Wells Fargo  but I called the number behind my card number, changed it to a new card. Person from behind the card number says they have no idea who this number belongs to. "Not from Wells Fargo, the other number they gave you is our partner company for fraudulent Identity theft." For dollar a month, ID protection. If they are not familiar with the first number but other number is their partner what does this mean, we can't trust our bank company any more? Or this is their new way of getting business for their partner company and new way to steal Identity from their clients. I told the person behind the card number first thing the bank opens on monday, I am going there to check and make sure my card is not working any more.

got the same phone message and i called the number on the back of my card.  they said that a hold had indeed been put on my card and. after verifying recent purchases as mine, they released it, so i guess the call was legit. the gal they had left the message spoke in very, very broken english and i had to listen to the message several times before i could discern what the hell she was saying.

This is indeed Wells Fargo Fraud Detection. When we said that we weren't comfortable giving our account number over the phone, we were instructed to call the number on the back of our debit card. We did so, & discovered we had fraudulent charges on the card - glad they called us.

I received a call also and it was not wells fargo number 877-316-2157.  Although the recorded message asked for my identity I did not give it.  I called the number on the back of my card and was told this is happening all the time.

Event Reminder
I got a message from 888-644-5575. The person they were calling for on the message was not us. I called back and they only had a automated menu that asked for the last 4 digits of my card number. It hung up shortly thereafter. The same day I got a second call from this same number. (But this time they gave a different number to call back. The 888-293-7475.)  This time I answered and it again was only an automated menu that just wanted to verify recent charges. But the original message was not for me. But for someone else.  And I couldn't get to a real person, so I hung up. I then called the 7475 number and got a real person who asked for my credit card number. Of course I didn't give it over the phone. I explained they had a wrong number. She said it was possible. And for me to call the number on the back of the card. Most likely its just a wrong number and they were calling by mistake. But still, just weird.

Yes, 1-888-293-7475 is VALID # of Wells Fargo Card Fraud Detection.

I've got the same letter which said:
=========================
As part of our Fraud Prevention Service, we would like to verify that you authorized certain activity on your account. Since we have not been able to reach you, please call us immediately at 1-888-293-7475.
=========================
I called Wells Fargo Card's main number, 1-800-869-3557 (1-800-TO-WELLS), so as to verify the number on the letter.

An operator of Wells Fargo said,
"Yes, 1-888-293-7475 is OUR Fraud Detection department's #."

Why? So that all calls can be routed through a different number and take twice as long to get assistance. Think again.

Yep, it's Wells Fargo. They identified themselves as Wells Fargo from the get go. Someone had used my card #, this caught it. Glad I found this site, and then called the #.

In case it helps anyone:
I also got the message to call 888-293-7475.  I called the # on the back of my Wells Fargo card instead and they verified the 888 number IS a legit number for their fraud group.  I was transferred to the fraud group and told my card info was stolen in connection with a website but they could not tell me which one.

The only bum charge I had (so far) was a $3.24 charge at a UHaul in Wyoming (I live no where near Wyoming).  WF flagged the charge as suspicious and called me on the same day (1-15) so kudos to whatever software they're using to monitor these things.

I'm thinking the info leak was probably through GEEKS.COM which was hacked on 12-14 and lost both cc numbers and the associated CVV2 verification numbers (the 3-digit code on the back of cards that merchants expressly pledge NOT to store).  My WF card is less than 12 months old and GEEKS is one of the few online places I've used the card to make purchases.  Though GEEKS was 100% positive that CC info was stolen, GEEKS did not inform ALL of their customers of the hack but chose instead to infom only the 650 or so customers who were most likely to have been affected.  This made me mad BEFORE I learned that my card was compromised.  GEEKS needs to fess up and tell ALL of teir customers what happened so the customers can know to be watchful of strange charges.

Hope this info helps!

I received a call from this # today, the Wells Fargo Fraud Dept., I called the 3 on the back of my card to verify, he said the # they gave me to call was not on his list of the Fraud Dept. #'s but that dosen't mean it isn't one.  I went ahead and cancelled my card in case it was not a legit problem.

888-293-7475 is legit. I called it after they left a message on my phone and then I got wierded out and hung up to call the number on the back of my card.  Then the number for the fraud dept was different than the one on the message, but when transferred I asked if there were any other lines and they gave me the the one on the message and said it was a non-public line. There was a hold on my account due to fraud and they cancelled my card and sent me a new one.
