Over the last week I have received several calls from these morons demanding money I supposedly owe on an account over 10 years old. I am very glad I checked to see if they were for real and from what I've read, these idiots are still on the scam. There are folks out there who don't check to see if the debt is real and I'm sure that's how this disgusting company is still in business - what can we do to stop them?!

Looks like these scumbags are still going strong. I got a call from this number this morning. No one there when I answered. Thanks to all for the ID.

I've been getting calls for some one who doesn't live here for many years from all different scumbag collectors. From the number of years I've been getting them, the original debt, if even valid, has to be way past the SOL.

This is America and we have federal and state laws that regulate debt collection.  Following those laws seems to be beyond the ability of many debt collection companies.

Check your state's statute of limitations for suing over debts. If the debt is beyond the SOL then no matter what you say to the collectors they cannot sue you. In "cause of action" states, the SOL begins 1 month and 1 day past your 1st missed payment [that's the 1st day the creditor has a "cause of action" to sue you]. States differ over whether the SOL can be restarted and they differ over what can trigger the SOL being restarted.

After 7 years the debts drop off your credit history and nothing should be reviving them.
Despite many illegal tricks employed by collectors in reporting your debt to credit reporting agencies, nothing restarts that 7 year credit drop off from your credit history report. That is a federal law.

If the debt is still unpaid then a creditor or collector with a real and legitimate right to collect the debt has the right to contact you and payment requested. You can, however, demand that no contact be made by phone and that all contacts be in writing.

They called me today for the first time, and I of course came right here to check the number. My suspicions were correct. The lady that called sounded seriously stoned, and since I have been free of all debt for over five years, I figured they were crooks. Thanks for being here, and thanks to all for the info. I guess that I can look forward to several more harassing calls from these vermin. At least I have learned that by ignoring them, they cannot touch me legally. The statute of limitations has long since expired anyway. Hang in there everybody; the new revolution is coming and this kind of scum will surely be dealt with.  :-)

Just got a call from these idiots today.  They called asking for me by my maiden name, then proceeded to tell me they were attempting to collect a debt from Discover from 2003.  I started laughing because I settled this thing in 2004, and mentioned to the girl that even if that hadn't been the case, we were beyond the statute of limitations in Texas for any sort of legal action.

She acknowledged that but then started to tell me that it doesn't mean that they (ALW) can't sue me for the amount.  Not true.  She then told me that she would note that I was disputing the owed amount (around $3,000), and that they would verify it with Discover, but if I didn't agree to a settlement today and Discover said the debt was valid, then I wouldn't get the pleasure of taking a settlement with them and would instead be obligated to pay them the entire amount.

Oh, really?

My response, "Being that I don't OWE this, I highly doubt that's going to be necessary.  You need to send me something in writing showing that this debt is still considered valid, because this has been paid off for 7 years.  Please note in your records that I am officially disputing this and will follow with written confirmation of that."

I will now be sending the expired statute of limitations letter, and then waiting for a violation.  Thank goodness this is Texas, and I can record their calls without telling them!

At $1,000 per infraction, I'm looking forward to it!

FYI - someone mentioned that they track you down when you seem to be 'doing well' financially.  I can confirm that.  It's been 7 years since I settled this, and 8 since the original delinquincy, and I hadn't heard word one about it since settlement until today.

My husband received a call from Al Riley from AWL Sourcing asking for me by my first name.  He wouldnt give my husband any information unless he gave Mr. Riley my social security number.  WOW, daring i would say. I do not have an outstanding debt so i am very glad that i was smart enough to google this "establishment" and found all of you. I hope Karma finds them in an unpleasant way for all the people that they have actually been able to scam!

Received call from 888-379-4884. Guy left a very generic message for a return call to him.
No name of person he's looking to speak to, just debt collector, any info will be used, blah blah blah.

We have been getting old debt calls for my wife's ex-boyfriend, from 10-years ago recently.

I have been very happy to forward his info to them in the past, however, latest we heard,
he's living in a tent in someones backyard down south somewhere.

I have passed this info on to them, and they have said they would remove the number
from their calling list. The calls stop for about a week to a month, then someone else starts calling.
(They sell off the debt - to another sucker CA, would be my guess )

Is there anyway to stop this repeated chain of events from happening, over and over?
The guy doesn't live in the state where we live. Lives in a tent down south.
And are tired of the calls.
Just seems like as some as this CA finds out he's not here, attempts to find him down south,
and gives up. They sell his debt to another CA and it starts all over again.

I, too, have been receiving daily calls from Steven Jones at awl sourcing.  Taped.  He never states the name of the person he wants to talk to.  I have reported every call to "do not call" but after reading the valuable comments here, I will be more proactive.  Thanks everyone.

I have received numerious call from the above ALW. Yet to leave a message on my answering

On back the store name was printed. The letter came from Jessup Maryland. I am glad to know I

You folks are all repeating the same message which basically is correct. In all States there is a statute (please stop referring to it as a statue) of limitations. If the specdified amount of time has expired, the debt is uncollectible but subject to being revived if you acknowledge its validity or make any payment of account.
Stop referencing the FTC Do Not Call List since it does not apply to charities or collection agencies.
Ignore their calls. There is nothing ALW can do against you except keep calling.
I have the ability to laugh at ALW since I work during the day and these calls all hit my voice mail.

We started getting calls on our corporate phone the last few days from AlW looking for one of our company officers.  Since I handle legal issues for the company I figured I would post some info to help others out.

After researching the net it looks as if ALW Sourcing, llc is quite possibly a spin-off of NCO collections.  Basically what they are doing is trying to collect on all the old debt that was in NCO's portfolio.  For most people the debts have surpassed there individual states Statue of Limitations, which makes trying to collect on them a violation of the Federal Fair Credit Reporting and Debt Collection Laws.

To everyone:  Google: Zombie Debt Collectors.

Also if you have debt collection issues I highly suggest you join this web sight www.creditinfocenter.com.

There is a vast amount of information available on protecting your rights, and how to deal with debt collectors on this web sight.

And as always if you don't understand something, seek the help of legal council.

At first it was constant recorded calls harassing phone calls from Ron Jackson at my place of work. I sent them a letter which I copied the Better Business Bureau (BBB) on as well and the calls stopped for about one week. The calls have now resumed except this time from Steven Jones but the message is the same....this is an attempt to collect a debt.....all information collected will be received for that purpose etc. The problem is I have no outstanding debts which was noted in my letter to them.

They were trying to say I owed s debt with Discover card. I called them and got a lady who said they were a debt collcter and trying to collect for Discover card. I explained that I did have a Discover card or ever did. They then told me they were looking for someone else and gave the name of the person that they were looking for. I then asked why did you call me and inform me that I had a debt. She said that the were looking for someone else. I asked them if they knew what they were doing was actually against the law. Because no debt collector can call someone else about a debt that belongs to another individual even if they are fishing to find out information on the orignal debtor. I also told her that I better not recieve any more calls from them on a debt that is not mine for I will consider it harassment. She informed me what she was doing was legal and they would call me again. I also informed her that I was also recording the conversation and that I was going to called the state attorney generals office to double check the laws about this and report the company for the tatics they were using and she quickly hung up the phone.

John's (April 8, 2009) answer is very helpful; the statue of limitation applies for credit card debt.  The time varies by state; for example, for NY State, it is 6 year.
