Send them this letter to that effect VIA certified mail with return receipt requested. Keep copies of everything. If you don't respond to their demand for payment, they will *assume* you owe the debt and sue you:
Today's Date
Your Name
Your Address
Collector's Name
Collector's Address
VIA CERTIFIED MAIL
RE: [insert account number or name of account or name of debt]:
Dear [insert collector's name or company name],
This letter is in response to your [letter dated xx-xx-2005] (copy enclosed) or [phone call on xx-xx-2005], concerning the collection of the above referenced [account or date].
I do not believe I owe what you say I owe therefore I dispute this debt. I am well aware of my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and my state laws so I hope to save both of us a great deal of time by letting you know that not only do I dispute the validity of this debt, I have also checked with my State Attorney General and verified that the Statute of Limitations for enforcing this type of debt through the courts in (insert your state or the state in which the contract was signed) has expired. Therefore, should you decide to pursue this matter in court I intend to inform the court of my dispute of this debt and that the "statute of limitations" has expired.
This letter is your formal notification that I consider this matter closed and demand that you, or anyone affiliated with your company, stop contacting me regarding this or any other matter except to advise me that your debt collection efforts are being terminated or that you or the creditor are taking specific actions allowed by the FDCPA or my state laws.
Be advised that I consider any contact not in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act a serious violation of the law and will immediately report any violations to my State Attorney General, to the Federal Trade Commission and, if necessary, take whatever legal action is necessary to protect myself. Be advised that I tape record all phone calls and violations of the FDCPA can result in you or your company being personally fined up to $1,000 per incident.

These people are calling me and trying to collect on a debt upon which the statute ran two years ago.
The big mistake people make when talking to these agencies after a debt has sunseted is that often, contacting them may cause the statute to restart.
These people can pound sand, as far as I'm concerned.
It doesn't help their cause at all that I won't follow through on a robo-call.

I got a collection letter from NCO Financial systems just after contacting Time Warner and letting them know I had not received a statement for 2 months. I paid the amount due (124.) that I received from online banking. This letter that I just received has an account number almost identical to my real account letter and has the amount due of $489.15. Time warner told me that since I was only one month late I would not be sent to collections... It seems like my mail was stolen by this crappy company. Call Time Warner direct.

SHADY! Do not give them money.
"Collection bureau of america"
I happened to get a Time Warner bill was sent to collections. When I turned in my equipment the customer service rep said they would send my final bill to my new address..fail.
Anyway, got a collection notice forwarded to me. Paid it through Time Warner right away and called the TW collection agency to let them know.
Time Warner only uses ONE collection agency. They DONT use Collection Bureau of America. I don't know how they got my info. Neither does Time Warner. TW rep actually was shocked that this agency got my info. A little disturbing!!!!!

After all that research, you would have been better off to have contacted the ORIGINAL creditor and paid them directly.

So now they have your credit card information. Why not just go to the "biller" and pay them what you owed them? I did that. It worked. And besides, if it is legit, you should have received notices in the mail.

Number is legit. It is a collection company. Got a couple of these messages left in our general delivery mailbox here at work. Called back, went to collections, and was told who they were trying to collect from. In this case, the person has not been with our company for two years. Does not sound like a Tier 1 collections company to me. They promised to stop calling.

This is Credit Bureau of America, and they are a legitimate bill collection agency. I received an automated call about an unpaid bill. I was not aware that I had any unpaid bills. When I called back CBA they immediately provided details on the biller, amount due and date of service. I said that I wanted to verify that this was correct and would call back. Indeed this was an old unpaid co-pay for a doctor's office visit that was way past due. (kind of embarassing.) In my case the bill was real, I verified it with the biller and yes, they confirmed that they sent it to the collection agency. I called CBA back and paid by credit card.
I was reluctant to call back after reading other posts with "scam accusations" but glad I got over that.

This company has been calling me since i moved to a new address (and got a new phone) last year. they always say my name in a recorded voice. The last call this morning stated it was an attempt to collect a debt. I called the number back and it said it was "CBA" (so last poster MM probably correct) and to enter my phone number. I really think this is fake. I have no outstanding debts to my knowledge, and any legitimate company would call me personally (not an automated recording) and/or send me MAIL, if i really had a debt. I am part of the Do Not Call Registry, but it seems there are a number of companies out there ignoring that.
