This agency calls references and relitives to leave threating messages, I know cause I use to work there.  They relay on others to reach the debtor with a message of pending legal action.  All the accounts the collect oare pay day loans over 5 to 6 yras orld and are under most state laws uncollectable

I agreed to pay but was laid off from my job in March.  Here it is December and they charged my credit card without my authorization.  I'm disputing it with the credit card company.  Is there any thing else I can do?  Maybe give them a scare of their own?  Charging someones credit card without their permission is called fraud.

it's a skip trace system. which locates you as well as any associates, and family members, AND that's how they locate you... you see they call all the people around you , looking for YOU... if it's a legal debt and you know you borrowed the money or owe the money... why get upset because they find you or your family? pay your bills, people it's not this serious... if you tell them the first time they call... you dont want to relate any info as well as tell them to remove the number. the first time... dont wait till they call you a million times to send out complaints... duh

you cannot sue them for that... the only fault they would have is disclosing personal information... as a collector you are allowed to probe, and ask as many questions as you want. with out disclosing information related to that person besides there name... people read the laws, makin a big deal out of nothing..

Various family members have received calls from a "Peach Tree Law".  EVERYTIME I call back and EVERYTIME they confirm that I am not the person that they are looking for.

This time I lost my cool!!

I started asking the questions like "Do you open a new file everytime you harrass a new family member although you are looking for the same person?  You should have notes on this already!" and "Stop looking, you have me on the phone yet you still haven't told me in the six times now that I have called you back....What is it that you want?!"

I was transfered to the Supervisor who threatened to transfer me to the Fraus Department.  After being placed on hold the Supervisor of unprofessionalism came back on the line to inform me that she had confirmed all of my information with her Fraud Staff and my bill had just increased from $600 to $4800.00 and then was hung up on!  When did lawyers get to increase the amount in which someone else is suing you for?

These people really need to do their homework before they TRY to impersonate a professionalism such as a Law!

Henry called me from Peachtree Law Center saying I owed a debt and was very unwilling to work with me.  That company is a scam.  They called my brother and parents and I would like it to stop.  They tried to get my debit card information and wanted me to pay all this money even after me telling them I was on Disability and I was not able to pay everything at once.  I told them I could work something out and was willing to pay it over time and they just kept telling me they did not understand.  I started doing research on the company and I am glad I did!  I told them I needed to see what I could do and they gave me a couple of hours and if I did not call them back, they would assume I did not want to work with them.

these shmucks are at it again.  they called my parent's neighbor of 20 years instead of me.  when my mom found out she was very upset by this and of course deflected anger at me. i'm glad i did some research.  i made some mistakes when i was younger but i walked away and everything is not past statute of limitations.  not proud of that, but i was young and in college.  my only outstanding debts currently are my student loan.  that is a federal loan and the collection/guarantee agency are fine to deal with.  i am unemployed right now and they are not threatening me with jail or garnishment of my UI benefit.  all i have to do is compare these legit collectors to these shmucks to know it's a scam.  i wanna talk to them, but when their robo dialer calls my cell phone (another pet peeve) it says please wait an important message and then hangs up.  so i can't even get my giggles asking them for validation of the loan.  man, i have learned so much about the shady underworld of debt collection.  i feel like i need to let everyone i know about this because obviously even smart consumers can get scared into their bullcrap tactics.... oh and watch the nightline video debt collectors gone wild.... a previous poster mentioned it.. here is a free hulu site with it that is accurate as of today 5/20/11....

I received a call from a very rude gentleman regarding a debt that I did owe. Since I did owe I assumed it was all legit and proceeded to set up payment arrangements. Minutes after I got off the phone my family in WASHINGTON State called to see if I was okay because he was contacted at his MILITARY base regarding me and a lawsuit. I am so disgusted that I was "ROBBED". I am a single mother of 3 and struggle hard enough to make ends meet. I wish there was a way to sue these people.

Peachtree law center just got in contact with an old friend of mine last week asking to leave a message for me about a lawful matter i had in there office.  They said I put him down as a reference when I got the payday loan out.  That was actually right, if i remember correclty. it was like a year or so ago.  BUt ya I called back, they said they had to get my file from a general manager??? my debt was accurate It was a payday loan i did online i never paid back...I wanted as much info as I can to prove that they were a real company and not a scam...they gave me a Aurora, CO address. a 800 number and a 720 number. they gave me attorny Richarson's name... They demanded the amount paid in full this month...haha I wish...they were able to work with me as far as setting an arangment.  They were pretty straight forward with the matter, i did appriciate that.  I asked why did they not call me first, but called my reference.  They said because I neglected the matter in the begining, they were instructed to contact any family or friends to pass the message along. Lastly they are a legit company, they were able to provide all company info with out hesitation, which was good...the only thing i did not like was that they did not allow me to send money orders via mail. they only accepted a debit card payment over the phone. I did pay my first payment and it seems safe.

A women called one day and ask for my son, told her I didn't have a number or address and she hung up.  The next day a man called from the same number asking for info on my son, told him the same thing I told the women, he hung up but called an hour later asking for my husband, I told him he called an hour earlier and my husband didn't know anything more than I told him.  Three calls in two days and they better not call again.  Don't know how they got our unlisted number.
They were nice when they called.

...just to clarify, I mean to say what "an operation like might look like" behind the scenes; i.e. the look of how professional (or lack thereof) they might actually appear in how they dress, how the office looks etc. (not the ethnicity of the individuals, or anything like that. I don't wanna feed any wrong ideas to the already erroneous racial stereotypes out there!!!)

When someone calls and states the words "LAW office", you might immediately get this intimidating picture in your head of this clean big office with neat books and files in the background, with the voice on the phone belonging to some uptight stern man in a suit, with a billion law degrees.

Clearly, in the Nightline vid it shows a possibility of what many of these places might REALLY look like... Regular everyday people in regular everyday clothes, working in an average small office suite, etc. Nothing official, or indicative of authority in any way.

I found some edifying videos on youtube that really shine light on these scumbags. Simply do a search for "debt collection scam" or "fraud", or even the best one yet-- search for the "Nightline Debt Collectors" report. I love that one... It really puts a picture in your head for what these people possibly look like behind the scenes...

Or, if you don't mind clicking on links-- I have them here for you.

If someone is calling you from a so-called "Law Center" as stated above and are threatening you about a debt you know NOTHING about, be very aware that you have NOTHING to fear.

See the website of the FDCPA (put in place by your government to protect you from these scammers, as well as keeping real debt collectors in line...):
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/cons...edit/cre27.pdf

They say they access a "police database"... They say you might be arrested... They say you have to "by law" abide in what they are telling you to do... They threaten with any kind of tough talk... ALL WRONG! See section 807...

You want them to cease immediately? Cite (and follow through with) section 809 of the FDCPA...

On the other hand, there are penalties for violating these laws. See section 813. Have a pen and paper ready to log each FDCPA regulation that they violate. Better yet, if it is within your legal right and availability, record the call. When you have these violations logged, turn them into your State Attorney General... GO AFTER THEM.

Awareness is the most effective defense for a lot of things in today's society. Thankfully we do have internet forums to alert our fellow citizens of these facts during these tough times. These predators prey on your fear are hoping for ignorance. Spread the word.

I am a self employed individual who has for years received all kinds of messages, calls, emails, pertaining to these types of scams. Quite frankly I'm sick of it. None of them have fooled me, but quite frankly a lot of them are an annoyance and can waste time if you let them. It's easiest to just hang up on all of them with an abrupt "do not call here again!" However, not everyone can afford to do that, as some really are in trouble with debt and some of these calls may be legit. Therefore, it is good to be well acquainted with the above site, and be prepared to take action of your own. Most often, the real debt collectors can be just as rude and violating of these rights as the scammers. They can ALL be held accountable for violations.

So, good luck people. Fight fire with fire. If almost everyone knew about these laws, these scammers would indeed fade away. Especially because of what can be done according to section 813. Scammer would be busted, and some of the bad apples in the real collection agencies would fold from paying so many fines.
