Debt Collector
Someone called me and my relatives with a restricted number and said to call 855-535-3546. When I called, the guy who answered said I called a corporate office. I gave the supposedly court order number and was transferred to a Russell Burke. He said I owed money and so forth. He pretends to be a lawyer but he sounds like a bottom feeder debt collector. He hung up on me. I called the number back and he answered instead of the CORPORATE SWITCHBOARD OPERATOR. He will not give me their address so I could send them a cease letter.

He said they tried serving me at my old address. But he can't provide me with their physical address.

this just happen to me too, at work too.  the # they are using now is (949-371-5931).  Same details and everything.  His name was Russell Burke, S.M. & Associates 2976 Michelson Dr, Suite G513, Irvine, CA 92612.  I did a search and did not find anything on the Name of the Company.  When I searched the Address on Google maps it showed me that it was a BUS STOP! He did send me a fax with old information of me on it.  This is a Scam and I will be reporting them to the RI attorney gerenal office.

This happened to me at work today.  When I put one of the attorneys I worked with on the phone, they started getting all agitated, claiming they needed a letter of representation from him, gave us a fax number which was no good.  Then gave another fax number which was also no good.  They gave an address so we could mail them the letter of representation.  The address they gave was for a Jack-in-the-Box in California.  Then they gave us another address in California which was in a completely different City.  Address also no good.  They said they couldn't send me anything, they were under no obligation.  Supposedly, it was for a credit card debt but they didn't have my home address.  The women insisted I could only make payments if I gave her a good faith payment (by credit card or debit card) over the telephone.  Threatening to serve me with papers at work.  Let them.  My attorney said it was definitely a scam.

Same thing, from a Damien Brown, claiming to work for an attorney, who is now handling a "judgment" against me for a debt that no documentation can be provided for. Male by the name "David Allen" calling my work, cell and home from blocked numbers saying he was a process server looking to serve me.  They have called from numerous different numbers, say they represent different companies, non that are legit, etc.  Demanding money from me asap.  They were instructed numerous times by myself, supervisors and my attorney not to call again.  (I work for the Sheriff's Office, and I am the one who processes all civil & criminal paperwork for service).....idiots!

They made threats to do harm to myself, have my kids taken away, make me loose my job, have me put in jail and have a writ of garnishment placed against my wages.

Don't give them your information!!!!!

They have my ssn, and I checked my credit report, and they have been inquiring on mine for several months now.

File complaints with the FTC & Attorney General.  If needed, contact & file an information report with your local law enforcement.  THIS IS A SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

My daughter received a phone call from someone that did not identify what company they were representing only said to contact them regarding litigation regarding her mother.  Left a phone number of 877-658-9258 and a pending litigation number.  I phoned them on behalf of my wife and they said the usual stuff as mentioned above.  Same threatening lines almost down to the last letter.  Evidently, these guys have their phone speach down pretty good.   Left me on hold for 5 minutes saying that they need to stop the paperwork for the subpoena.   I hung up and called back and spoke to who I believe he said his name was Rick.   Wanted me to settle for what he said was about 50 cents on the dollar.   I asked for the name of the company he was calling for and while my wife did owe them money, settled with them about two years ago.  So I am not sure where this is coming from.   The name of the organization is SM Acitive Litigation.   I also checked Better Business and came up with nothing, neither a complaint nor are they a member.  I checked the court records online for my county assuming they would need to file the proper court paper work through the county where we live.   The litigation number came up blank and unable to locate that record.   Also, the litigation number they gave me was NOTHING like the sample litigation number the web page showed.  I have asked for a fax of the letter they supposedly gave me around a month ago.   I have received nothing from these guys other then a threatening phone call.    Before calling them I tried to do a reverse phone look up and came up totally blank with no information regarding the 800 number listed above.

They are now using an 877-723-4123 #. They called me about my son, they called my other two kids. They won't say what the claim is, or who it is for. They claim to have a "subpoena" but you can't start a law suit with a subpona. They claim trial is to start "this week". The is obviously a scam. They may have bought old debt for pennies on the dollar, and hope someone will be scared (and dumb) enough to send money. If they call, demand names, location, return phone numbers, ask for name of the court, and a case number. If they tell you the "subpoena" is in an envelope, tell them where to shove it. The company name being used with us was "Active Litigation". They have partial soc sec numbers based on the state and location of the target.

My mother keeps getting harrassing calls from a debt collector from Steel Morgan and Associates, LLC and no matter how hard I search, no information comes up on them. The only "proof" they sent us was a few shady phone calls and an emailed Microsoft Word document. As you know, ANYONE can send that. I see a lot of people with similar issues. These guys just don't seem legit. Can anyone help prove anything??

These people called my sister looking for me. They said they had been trying to reach me for weeks. I never received a call or mail from them. They told my sister the name of the company was SMA Associates. They said there was a lawsuit against me and I could resolve the issue if I called back. If I didn't call back I'd be served with a subpena. I called them back to see who it was and what it was about. They answered the phone Corporate Office. I gave her the file # they left with my sister and then she transferred me to a guy who told me there was a lawsuit against me for a bad debt. I asked him what account and what was the account # he gave me the info however, the amount was significantly higher than what my credit report says (I am currently in process of cleaning up my credit, so I had a copy in front of me when I called) I owed the credit card company 400.00 and they are saying almost 3000.00. I told him I never received any mail and he said he can take 2000.00 off the amount, but that I needed to make payments of at least 100.00 a month. I told him I have been a victim of identity theft and that I would like info on his company since they do not appear on my credit report that I had just pulled 2 weeks ago. He took my email address and said he'd email me all the info and gave me his direct line to call him back. I asked the name of the company and he said S M Active Litigation.

The guy said his name was Rick, and I get an email from a Fatima Diaz (whoever the heck that is)with the following company information..

SMA, LLC
2967 Michelson Drive Suite G513
Irvine, CA 92612
Phone (909) 456-1839 Fax (909) 456-1244

I have looked this info up multiple different ways and nothing has come up on them. Not to mention they gave 3 different company names. Once to my sister on the phone, then to me on the phone and the email said something totally different. I want to pay this debt back, but not sure if these people are legit. I have been trying to search on better business  bureau  and it just searches and searches so obviously they have nothing on these guys either.
