Calling me repeatedly with message that this is a time sensitive matter and that I'm being investigated for internet fraud by the Federal Government. I'm not calling this joker back. Sounds like a scam to me. They can send me a certified, return receipt requested document.

This guy named Daniel Lewis called saying I owed a payday loan and they had filed papers in the federal courthouse of California, and they would be at my job in two days to serve my boss with papers and I had two days to show up in court. I offered to take care of the bad debt, but when I began to ask questions, and wanting the info in writing, they became upset with me, and began yelling at me, and eventually he hung up in my face. Also he was talking fast, never gave my ssn, but said he had it, and would not repeat the name of his company to me. He also had my mothers name, and said he would be calling to speak with her. He had given me a fax number to send my info and credit card info, thankfully I didn't do that. But I did fax a letter saying I would take of the debt, but they must provide something in writing, and do not contact me anymore by phone, it must be by us mail and in writing and if they call me again, I will file charges against them.I have informed my boss about this matter, and the lady that answers the phone at the front desk.

I received a call today from someone (Indian? accent) identifying himself as Steven Anderson from the "Federal Counsel of the United States Government" and saying that I have been accused of a "cyber crime".  He threatened to send a subpoena to my home and work and that I would lose my job.  I told him that I wanted to see papers.

I've been bullied into paying old debts by similar characters before.  This time I'm fighting back.

A man by the name of Robert Keith and Lance? has called me to say that I owe a payday loan and they would arrest me in 72 hours if I did not send them money. They also said they were from the Federal Councel of the United States Government. You could not understand them as they were from some other country and tried to scare me into paying a note that I have no clue what they were talking about and they could not provide me with any information or company name other than they were working with the FBI. Scared Me. They had plenty of information about me even where I worked.I reported them to the Federal Trade Commission.

I too have received a call from Daniel Lewis stating he was from the Federal Counsel of the United States Government. After getting a fax number from him I sent a letter requesting verification of the debt of said payday loan. I have yet to receive any other contact from him of this so called company.

Does anyone know exactly who this is?

I too got the same call. However I researched the number online and thanks to the posts I cussed his a** out! Told him people are on to his scam, and I would be filing complaints with various agencies in the morning. This caused him to get flustered and curse saying they would be at my door in the morning. I warned him that would be a bad idea. Anyway, this is a TOTAL SCAM. You can't even understand his a**, give it back to them. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I received a threatening telephone call at a number that was odd and when i decided to look the number up i found this site and after reading the post by "Kara" it was almost the same for me of them calling like 3 times in a row and when they left a message it was from a foreigner named "Roberto" who stated that it was urgent that I contact them in 48 hrs and that a cyber crime report complaint had been filed on me and that my employer would be contacted if I failed to respond. He said he was from unrecognizable name of the Chamber Council blah blah blah and when i called the number he left for me to respond to it went straight to voicemail. Thank u guys so much for posting this info b/c I think I was forced into paying for a loan previously by threat. BTW I called the number back and informed him that I had filed a report on him with the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commision in which I actually did do. Once again thank u for posting those comments and numbers b/c when i saw that weird nine digit number and checked my number it was the same. Thanks so much!!! I was really scared.

WALLINGFORD, CT, August 07, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about would-be debt collectors who call "payday" loan holders, threatening arrest if they don't pay immediately.

A payday loan, also known as a paycheck advance, is a short-term cash advance intended to cover expenses until the holder's next payday.

The callers claim they are lawyers with the "Financial Accountability Association" or the "Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans," and they are armed with stolen personal information from their victims, indicating a major security breach of unknown origin. The names used by the scammers may change with time.

According to Connecticut Better Business Bureau President, Paulette Scarpetti, payday loan holders appear to be particularly at risk.

"Because the scammers have so much information about potential victims, BBB is concerned that this may be the result of a data breach. Thousands of people may have had their personal information compromised."

Reports received by Better Business Bureau and posted online explain the con artists threaten the loan holders of defaulting and claim they are being sued. The imposters threaten the loan holders with imminent arrest and extradition to California to stand trial, unless they immediately wire $1000 or provide bank account or credit card information.

Connecticut Better Business Bureau has advice for consumers who receive suspicious telephone calls about an outstanding debt:

-Don't be bullied into immediate action. Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation that substantiates the debt.
-Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the telephone until you confirm the legitimacy of the call.
-If you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you, file an abuse complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at www. ftc.gov, or by telephone at (202) 326-2222. Also file a complaint with your Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org or by telephone at 203-269-2700, ext. 2.

These people called me 3 times on a Friday from a private number and everytime I ignored the call. Then they finally left a message for me to call them back at this number. When I called them back they were talking about a case against me and I told them that I didnt know what they were talking about and he acted surprised and said he had to read an affidavit and I could not speak the whole time he read it but he would answer questions afterwards. Luckily I knew what they were doing cause someone called me a few months ago from a different number saying the same thing. They told me that someone would be coming to my work on Monday and if I didnt have $1500 to pay them they I would be leaving with them to go to jail. Needless to say they never showed up but they call about every 3 or 4 weeks and its always a different company. Guy that left the message said his name was something Henry and the guy that answered when I called back was Mark Lewis. I spoke to the police department and they told me that I need to file a police report for identity theft.

I cussed them up one side and down the other. They said they would have to send someone to my house to see if I was really who they thought I was or not and I told them to bring it on. I feel sorry for them if the do.

And the number only showes up as 9 digits instead of 10????? crazy.
