I am neither a student nor an alumni. I have no children there and i have never donated before so if those are the criteria, i dont understand why they are calling me.

These people got my wife's cell number. How I don't know.

Is there any way to ask the calling company to remove a number? I guess I will check the site.

Actually, the FCC can do something if someone calls and it is just "space". Making silent calls is illegal and is taken as a threat. Tell them you have a TRaP set on your phone and if they call again simply say Trap and hang up, they will NOT call again :) hope this helps

its on an automated system that has a list of phone numbers, it allows the phone to ring 3 times and continues on to the next phone number even if someone answers right after or during the 3rd ring

That is UNC Chapel hill Annual Fund. If you are a parent, student, alumni, or donor you will be called to ask to donate to the annual fund that helps the whole school or a part of the school that you choose. its no harm. we are students not creepy ppl. If you dont want them to call tell them to take you off their list forever and if they dont do it then give them the wrong info.

Haha. That's exactly what I was thinking when I read his/her previous post. Thank you for saying precisely what was on my mind.
But anyway, as a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill who was friends with many people whose summer job was with the UNC Phone-A-Thon, I can assure you that these students could not care less about what you have to say on the phone to them. They are paid something like 8 dollars per hour to make phone calls. You won't offend them by asking them, politely, to stop calling you. They get paid no matter how much or how little you donate. And the list of UNC graduates is hundreds of thousands of people long, so there are many more people for them to call.
In any case, if you are indeed a graduate of UNC-CH, it would be nice to return the favor that is an education at UNC and donate a few bucks. My $45 per year is nothing in comparison to the education that I received.

It's another telemarketer. Try this:

1) You answer & no one is there: hit ###### many times in rapid succession (creates an even-spaced beep) and hang up; Machine may interpret that your number is bad and take you off the list.

2) You answer & get a sales pitch: say "please hold" and set the phone down till they hang up; If you always waste their time like this, they'd be stupid not to take you off the list.

yeah, i hate to tell you this, but filing a complaint with the fcc won't do a bit of good.  RuffaloCODY is a non-profit organization, not a telemarketer, and they really aren't doing anything illegal and they are not effected by the national "Do Not Call" list.  Universities, colleges, and in some cases, high schools hire them to call their records for fundraising purposes.  Just answer the phone and tell them to remove you from the list, its as simple as that.

to answer sf's statement from above:
Hitting # repeatedly won't work bc this is not a telemarketer.  I assure you that this will not screw up the computer system bc the representatives have to tell the computer wether its a bad number or not.  The computers do not make this judgement.
Also, taking telling the rep to "please hold" and sittong the phone down doesn't work bc the reps cannot remove your number from the list until they have received either, a pledge, or someone telling them not to call.  Its their job, they obviously need the money because they are all college students, and they are going to do what they are told. This method is uneffective because I promise that they will continue to call you.  Like I said earlier, its as simple as answering the phone and POLITELY asking them to stop calling.

The fact of the matter is that universities are very sensitive to communication controls that restrict alumni/student contact.  They must take FERPA regulations into account in their communications, but almost every school (particularly one with a significant development program that uses a student phone drive, unc in the case above) keeps careful records of requests to limit communication.  Universities are also required to include unsubscribe information in any electronic communications.  Schools can't go out and recruit new alumni donors, the pool is limited.  As a result, schools are careful not to alienate donors.  If you prefer email or US mail to phone calls, often you can request that you only receive information one way.

hi, i'm employed as a student caller at the carolina phonathon.

if you would like to be removed from the list, you have to answer the phone and speak to the caller. you can either "Do Not Call" or "Remove from List". being removed from the list removes you from mailings and emails as well.

you cannot call the number back immediately (we're using that phone), it would be best to call before 5:45 EST when we begin to start calling. we call from 6:00pm to 9:30pm MTWR and Su 2:00pm to 9:30pm

Hi!

I used to work for Ruffalocody.  It is basically a call service from UNC-CH to update alumni contact information and to request that alumni support the Carolina Annual Fund.  This find basically finances everything academic throughout Carolina.  There is even a way to specify where you want to donate your money.  I used to work for them.  The only way for them to stop calling you is if you pick up the phone before it rings three times.  The person they are calling for has to speak with them.  If it is a spouse and he/she tells them not to call then they still code is as a "not available" and will call back.  Once you have spoken with them, politely ask to be removed from the list.  This will provide you with no calls and no mail.  If you just ask to not be called they will still send you mail.  Don't bother calling the number back because it is an operating system.  And please don't become frustrated with the students.  We have to go through our four asks.  It's part of the protocol and we get critiqued if we don't make all four of them.  Please be polite.  All of the callers are students who were lured in by the promise of 8.50 and hour...they emphathize but someones has to do the job.  If not, a lot of things would not be so amazing at Carolina.  The least you can do is listen to them.  Be polite.  The call takes maybe five minutes and then at the end just ask them to take you off the list.  If will give them a good report and it will prevent you from being called again.

this is the phone-a-thon. I actually used to work there. Worst job ever but cfrc is correct. When they call if you answer and tell them to take you off the list you will. Trust me these kids don't want to talk to that badly so they aren't pushy. Plus they are just doing it to pay for school so take it easy on them. They could be doing alot worse things to make money.
