Anyone who calls you and asks for either an account number or your social security number is a SCAM!  Don't fall for it or give them any numbers.  Think before you act!!!

I have been receiving calls at least 3x a day for the last 2 weeks.  When I call back it says American Express.  However, when I contacted American Express via the number on the back of my card, they claim this number is not one of theirs and that NO information should be given to the caller from this number.  The real American Express people claim this is probably a SCAM/Phishing attempt.

Yes, I was called and this number was displayed. Yes, I was late with my Amex payment and was expecting a call. If it was a scam, how did the guy on the phone know what I owed? I was not asked for any personal information or information about my bank account or Amex Card. They wanted to know when I planned to pay. I told them. End of story.

Yeah, same with me. I don't answer at a and they never leave messages. Somehow they must get info from Amex about who is late. Or maybe from a real collection agency? In any case, if it was really Amex, they would leave a message. Great scheme for making people think its real, a***oles.

I am also getting these calls. I have not mailed in a large payment to AE, but small until my checks arrive.  I would think this to be enough since they have heard from me.  I have four numbers stored in my directory for AE, but after reading the replies, I have marked this one 'SCAMMER' do not ans. and I pulled the ring off!  Whoever you are, it will ring on your end but not on MINE!  SHAME ON YOU SCAMMER!  They never leave a message!

Prank Call
Just one word for these scumbags (directed at them) .... a**les!!!!

They really must be brain dead! They aren't ever going to get through. PERIOD!!! They will always get the same message greeting them each time whatever number they use!!!

Always calling people who don't have any business with American Express and trying to scam them out out of their money!

The FTC has been notified, next my lawyer!!! In short, I'm not buying their bs nor am I ever going to fall for it!
These a**les are total moron's!!!!

One other thing, I have called American Expresses customer service number (listed on their website) and spoke with one of their representatives (had to keep saying "representative" to get someone)... they confirmed that NONE of these numbers below are American Express numbers and do not go to any other department or service connected with or to American Express:

CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (212) 380-3114
CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (623) 492-8037
CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (801) 945-9061
CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (954) 503-2843
CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (602) 537-9011
CID: TOLL FREE CALL         (800) 266-7073

And also the AmEx rep stated that they WON'T call you ... but rather it would be you (if an AmEx account holder) calling them! They'd NEVER call regarding such as discussed in this thread. They do what's known as inbound calling in other words ... not outbound as in the case with each of these reported numbers claiming to be AmEx!!!

It's a vishing scam, folks!!! DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY INFORMATION TO THESE A**LES AT ALL!!! REPORT EACH CALL, INCLUDING, TIME OF DAY, DATE, CALLER ID INFO!!! They are phishing for your personal information to either bleed your account dry (if you have an AmEx account) or worse, steal your identity!!! It's a SCAM!!!

http://idtheft.about.com/b/2009/01/19/american-express-vishing-scam.htm

"I received my first vishing voice mail today. The call came in early, and the voice mail said American Express needed to verify charges that were being made to my account. They asked that I call a specific number, not the number on the back of my card and enter my full 16 digit account number to be taken directly to the security department.

I knew immediately that it was a vishing call because I am not an American Express customer. But even if I were, I would never call a number left on my voicemail and enter my full account number. I assume that American Express would have that number and would need nothing more than the last four digits to verify my identity.

Identity theft and credit fraud criminals are getting more and more sophisticated. Beware of any incoming call that requests information that the company should already have on file. And when in doubt, always hang up and call the number on the back of the card, not a number provided in voicemail."

http://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/fra ... ncename=default

"Phone Phishing (also called "Vishing") is another way fraudsters try to collect sensitive information from you. In this type of fraud, the fraudster will either contact you by telephone or send you a fake e-mail and ask for you to respond by telephone.

If you are ever in doubt about American Express contacting you by phone, simply call the number on the back of your Card or on your account statement. Be sure to enter your account number when prompted and you will be routed to the correct department for assistance.

What Should You Do If You Supplied Sensitive Information over the Phone to a Suspicious Party?
If you have already responded to a suspicious caller with your American Express account information and you believe it to be fraudulent, please contact American Express immediately by calling the number on the back of your Card"

http://www.blindmansfaith.com/updates/2009/04 ... 1-800-592-1176/

"Last night we received a call from a person named Margaret (left a voicemail) saying it was about an important business matter and not a sales or marketing call. Wanted us to call back at 1-800-592-1176.

The message itself was very suspicious because if it was an important message, the person would have left a note about what was so important about it.

We did some searching on the web and found that this is a group of scammers who claim to be from American Express. When you call back, they?ll request your social security number as well as your American Express card number before they?ll tell you what the ?important matter? was.

Anyway, thought we?d post this on our blog in case any of you get the same message. The more information that shows up on Google search engine, the more informed others will be when they search for this number.

The most annoying thing is, we get these calls in the middle of the night (Shanghai time) because we have a California telephone number. We use a Packet8 IP phone, which is basically a U.S. landline in China! We get a bunch of random sales and marketing calls in U.S. time!"

And another thing ... Caller ID has "AMERICAN EXPRES" (one "s", not two!). If it were actually American Express or their collection arm it would be spelled "AMERICAN EXPRESS" with TWO "S"'s or TOLL FREE CALL (for any 800 number)!!! - But of note, American Expresses numbers are all 800 numbers (check their website)!!!

With the exception of the '*800" numbers, all the other numbers that have 'called' can all be traced to IP Addresses which indicate either a cell phone and/or VoIP service was used to make these calls!

Those making these illegal, harassing scam calls:
? Ask for full account number plus social security number as well
? Call people how don't have an AmEx card or AmEx account
? Voice on other end is pretty much one with an Indian Accent
? And since the other numbers they call with is IP traceable that also could mean the numbers are spoofed

As to this particular reported number... traceable to IP addresses:

http://www.verifyphone.com/phone-lookup-reviews/954-503-2843

"Reverse IP Search Tracer for 9545032843

This reverse phone number was traced from the following IP addresses: 70.196.201.245"

Which indicates it's either from a cell phone and/or a VoIP service is being used ... possible Caller ID spoofing as well!!!

The (623) 492-8037 and  (602) 537-9011 numbers also had false CID location of Parsnippity, NJ*, when the 602 and 623 Area Codes are actually for Phoenix, AZ!!!

[* as displayed location on the service I use to trap these scam calls]

And also, to note ... They sometimes follow using a 000-000-0000 identifier, which means they're calling from an international site.

Some jerk called from this saying he was American Express.  He kept asking for personal information...wtf...we have American Express and do all our banking online.  There is no reason for them to call us and ask for personal information and get all threatening when we won't give it out.

Not sure what to think about this.  I missed my last Amex payment, and have been getting calls from a variety of Amex numbers.  Also calls from this number.  This number has ONLY called me when I was late with Amex, so either it is Amex, and Amex collection agency, or a scammer who strangely knows when I am behind on my Amex card.

I tried calling the number back twice, using Yahoo Messenger phone (I don't want to call them on my cell), and was unable to connect to them.  Not a problem with Yahoo; I made calls last night.  That is kinda weird.

However, whoever they are, I know they'll stop calling as soon as I pay my bill.  So, I'm not quite sure this is a "scam", there seems to be logic to when they call.

American Express has multiple calling numbers, so that they can reach people at ALL TIMES of the day and night.  This is one of their Collection Department numbers.  They will try to set up a commit date by which you feel you can make a payment, they will allow you to change the scheduled commitment two days prior if you cannot get the funds in time because they are offering good customer service.  I usually am not late, but lately it has been harder to come up with funds, job change and so many other things affected.  So, basically it is AMERICAN EXPRESS and the man was actually very polite and amenable.

Should there be a new LAWS form to stop these callers?!?

They call about twice a day. They say they are American Express. We do not have an American Express card. My husband called AMEX and told them of these calls and they said they would have their legal department look into it. We star 57 every call and it traces the call. After 5 traces we can have them arrested. Our phone service is Verizon.

I feel your pain as well.  When they call, I speak with them and the first words out of their mouths are, "I understand your troubles, how would you like to pay for this?"  I of course have to respond purely out of frustration, as I have had to use my cards to pay other bills just to get by.  Of course, that is the worst thing you can do, but I had to so in order to keep my phone so I could keep receiving calls, well the hope of receiving calls from potential jobs.
My favorite was "do you have a savings".  I wanted to reach through the phone and strangle them.  I said however, "well, don't you think I would have paid you if I had a savings?"  What a stupid question to ask someone that has already explained that there is 0 dollars in their checking and savings account.
I honestly hate this mess that I'm in, and the least thing I need is someone asking me to make payment arrangements when the money tree out back is barren.

I get calls from this number at all kinds of hours, even on weekends.  So stressful for me,  I wish they'd stop harassing me.  I am unemployed right now and on the verge of losing my house.  My husband just passed away and I am so depressed and stressed right now getting these unwanted and unsolicited calls from this number.

Anyone saying this # is legit is part of the SCAM.  Just spent 10 min. on the phone discussing this with amex.  When they call the ask you security questions, maybe last 4 of ss but NEVER your acct. # or social like these bums did.  Those saying it's collections, nope, I'm current with perfect credit.

They never leave a message, and I get calls from several different numbers. Any time I Google any of the numbers, it brings me to a site like this where people are complaining and 9 times out of 10, they say the caller identifies themselves as American Express. I am not a cardholder, never have been, so obvio this isn't REALLY American Express.

They never leave a message and I never answer phone #'s I don't recognize.

My house continues to be bombarded by these vagrants daily with absolutely no regard. If any company legitimately needs to be in contact with you they will do it through your legitimate contact information that you have on file with them.

If anyone asks for your Social Security Number, Debit Card or Credit Card Number, or any other personal information, IT IS A SCAM !

I also got a call from this number it is in Fort Lauderdale where Amex is based - but if they actually call you their num ber would show up as a toll-free number even if they are calling from an internal land line. It is a scam - anyone who asks you for your SS# or Date of Birth is a scam - Amex ask for secret codes from you.
