Creditors don't just get people's names from applications they also have ways of pulling known acquaintances. I used to be a skip tracer and these names and numbers pull on some skip tracing sites.

You are absolutely wrong. They may call once perhaps because your friend gave out your number. However if you are on the national no call list.(there is one for cells as well) you inform them that they can never call again because you are on the list. If you are not on the list you have no protection. It is a violation of the following.
The FTC Act at 15 U.S.C. §§ 41-58 and related case law.
The Communications Act at 47 U.S.C. §§ 151-757 and related case law.
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) at 47 USC §227 and related case law.
The Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud Abuse Prevention Act at 15 U.S.C. §§ 6101-6108 and related case law.
The Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud Abuse Prevention Act at 15 U.S.C. §§ 6101-6108 and related case law.
The Do Not Call Implementation Act at P.L.108-10, 117 Stat. 557, and related case law.
The Telemarketing Sales Rule at 16 C.F.R. § 310 and related Agency statements and case law.
The FCC's rules implementing the TCPA at 47 C.F.R. § 64.1200 and related Agency statements and case law.

NOTE: You may also want to review the requirements in those states in which you live and the call is coming from. Many states prohibit calls to telephone numbers listed on the National Do Not Call Registry. These companies are required to update their calling lists regularly. The only calls allowed from that list are if YOU have done business with them within the last thirty days personally.
You should also inform them that they need to update their own in house no call list which all of these tele-collection, marketing types have. Record the time, date, number, and callers operator number and name if they give  you one.Do not give them your name or any other personal information not even your number, they already have what they need. Don't expect any results by complaining on one call but multiple calls can bring results if you follow through with a complaint. It could also mean money to you.

Actually, no it's not. You can use references to try and reach the debtor. There is NOTHING in the Free Trade Act regarding references the only violations would be if the collector/creditor divulged personal information or details about the reason for their call. Also, there is nothing in credit application or loan agreements stating that they won't call references. I don't know where you get your false information from.

I just got one of these on my voice mail...
It's a Personal Debt Collector, saying they have very important information to call the number between the hours of 8am and 5pm MST.

I do not have any debt, so I'm thinking it's probably a scam to get information out of you.

Same thing here. They called, I answered and a recording  left a lengthy message to call them back!
They were listed on my bankruptcy which was DISCHARGED a week ago! I took the time to call them back, again give the case number and tell them I will advise the court that they defied the order.

It's a real collection agency - specifically for medical.  I just made a payment on a hospital bill and the hospital turned it over to them four days later... Ughh.  I decided to give them a call after reading the above.  I verified some information and then they informed me that it was indeed for this hospital bill that I do owe money to - - thanks to my crappy health insurance.

The agent was pleasant, and made arrangements with me. He also verified that it wouldn't report on my credit as long as I paid the payments within 60 days.

Called me when I was at a sporting event last night, around 8 PM Central.  I have no idea if they tried to say anything- the crowd noise was so loud I had the phone on Vibrate mode.  No message. I've had this phone for nearly 4 years and the previous owner left many unpaid bills behind judging from the number of calls I get.

Called very early on a Saturday morning. I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. Based on the other comments here, they probably weren't even calling me, but were looking for someone else anyway. I pay my bills.

I get calls from this number once every other week. Appears to be debt collectors. Problem is they are asking for a "Daniel Moore." I am not him, don't know him, nor have I ever known anyone by that name. This evening they called me around 6PM central time. I answered and got an automated message. In the message it says,"If you are not Daniel Moore, please call..." then it rambles off a number too fast to write down and doesn't repeat it. So I called this number back directly and had to leave a message.

Your talking about solicitation for loans / credit cards.  This has absolutely nothing to do with collection laws.  The above post is actually correct.  They obtained the phone number from his/her friend.  And it is 1000000% legal for them to call it.  They can actually call everyday by law.  When a debt is refereed to collections they only have what the facility provides.  IE phone numbers etc.

A company continues to call me from this number (970) 534 - 3287. I have since found out that this number belongs to a collection agency, and they are looking for my mother. The reason they are looking is because Direct TV failed to pay our final bill when we switched from Dish Network. Direct TV tells us that we need the actual last bill sent out in order to do this, we sent the bill and it was returned to us with a message that it wasn't the correct bill. So now I am getting collection calls from this company

Actually if you read the fine print on a application for credit or loans you will see that the statement about NOT CALLING ANYONE USED AS A REFERENCE (other than to verify information). Also this is considered a violation of the Free Traded Act.

Set it in my addy book to go straight to voice mail.

Here's a tip: most places will NOT leave any voice mail if you are not identified on your voice mail.
Leave the default message, or do not state you name on the greeting, set the numbers to go straight to voice mail, and you will never again be harassed!
