The same thing happened to me. I took a payday loan few years ago to help me through a rough patch during my divorce. I don't know what happened but for some reason all of the sudden people started to call me about it saying I owe them. I have email records of the conversation I had with the lender and it was settled. I paid it off. I'm trying to get a hold of them to find out if something happened and my name is somewhere out there. Anyways, I asked the guy for his company name he didn't want to give me. I then ask for a written explanation of the debt and amount, he refused it. He started to ask me questions about my ssn, address. I told him I wasn't going to give him anything unless he could produce something in writting. It ended up ugly with him telling me he was sending me to court and yada yada yada. BS.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I believe that they can call them, but only to find out how to get in touch with you.  They are not allowed to discuss your personal business with anyone.

I received a letter after I paid. Not sure what the deal was....I tool put a payday loan (biggest single mistake of my life) and I paid my loan off called my original loan company they told me it was paid.  I was disrespected HOWEVER they did call my parents work and even a neighbor.  BUT I did list them as references on my app.  Now my question is that legal for them to call work and a neighbor?

Never let bullies on the phone confuse extortion with debt collection. Honest debt collectors do not typically send their claims straight to a judge, and they don't take your ransom money to broker quick deals with so-called "process servers". There are no secretive "arbitrators", "investigators", "mediators", or "prelitigation specialists", only sweaty criminals with a script full of coercive remarks. Lawful debt collection is a process, not an ambush, and you are due a chance at each stage to raise a dispute. The agents' horrid threats are empty and their conduct is illegal. Do not reward lawbreakers with your money. Challenge them always, sue them if you can.

} borderline extortion

Glad that someone else sees it the same way. Amazing how this breed of goon always has "papers on the desk" yet cannot produce proof of claim, hence the ridiculous threats.

I just received a call yesterday and didn't answer the phone but  i checked my messages. There was this guy who said his name was Mr. McKay and that i needed to contact him with my attorney. He claimed it involved check fraud. What? I haven't written or even had a checkbook since probably 2000. It really made me nervous but i am thankful i am able to read posts like this. I cannot believe people in the world would really do this to hard working people.

This is NOT a legit company.  I got a call from a Mr. Jenkins last week.  He told me he worked for an arbitration company and my file was on his desk.  I was warned that if I didn't work something out soon, then I would be getting served a summons at my place of employment.  When I asked for proof of the debt, I was told that they didn't have to provide any.  He gave me the number of the company I supposedly took out a loan with and said I could try to work something out with them, but that I probably wouldn't get anywhere because they have already charged it off.  The next day, I received a call from a woman saying she was a process server, and was on her way to serve me a court summons unless I could call 972-532-0087 and work something out.  First of all, your are NEVER warned when you are being served papers, they just show up.  Second, it is illegal to impersonate a court officer.  Just hang up on them and don't answer their calls.  What they are doing is borderline extortion.

me too.  I received the call.  I did call back same as yours Joe B. about 4 years ago.  I contacted the bank and they did show a deposit on that day for that amount.  these loans are bad when i googled the loan company it said 441% interest is that even legal?  Im annoyed cause if I took it out I owe it but that amount they gave was really high too.  How can that be legal.

I received a call from this company today also saying I have 2 pending allegations in the city of Dallas against me and if I don't respond in 2 days with restitution they will send a letter to my work for payment.  There is a civil complaint against me...can you let me know how your issue turned out?  I haven't called them back yet as I don't know what it could be honestly but needless to say I don't get calls like this everyday and they do have my name, number, etc.

Is this a legit company!? threatening to have county officials involved if not paid. My bank account hit over three years ago, and they kept probing the account running up overdraft fees etc until the check was in and then nailed it for all!!! now they say they are still owed 500$ from 3 years ago...and its accrued to 1500$ but can be settled now for 990$ if payment installations are made within 48 hrs, otherwise they will turn it over to the county to deal with. Is this for real!???
