I received a phone call today from a 972-295-9013 The lady said her name was mary markum and she was calling me to tell me about an affidavit with my name and social attached. I needed to call her back or my attorney when I called back she said that I had taken out a payday loan and if I didn't pay some money today they were going to send it to the court house and issue a warrant for my arrest of course I started freaking out. One I had no payday loans and two a while back someone stole my wallet with my i.d. and my social so I thought they had to be behind it because I had gotten a letter about identity theft saying someone had tried to get credit cards in my name. I explained to her that it was not me but she kept threating me with jail. My kids were sitting next to me so they heard everything. She had all my info how I have no idea but they ended up getting a 100 dollars from me. So please everyone be careful these people have stuff from you they shouldn't but no real case or bank is gonna demand money that day

Relax. I'm in Washington State. The charge is the correct amount for my monthly phone bill for Frontier, formerly Verizon. I noticed when I paid on-line, it said I was paying Verizon, then it shows up as NewCommu. What a hokey company. But I don't care as long as I don't get overbilled.

IT IS FRONTIER which merged took over verizon.

so some changes happened, you might get charged crap. Mine was the internet security online fee. There are idiots as representatives there. She thought mine was 8.99 not 5.99 so I dont know if they can even see them. anyways. Turns out 5.99 a month was the prorated amt. Definitely monitor it though.
They are so stupid there.

I had gotten internet security turned back on which I thought was included in Highspeed Internet and PhoneLine combo. That was it

I don't think I rec'd a phone call; we actually called Frontier.  However, I also received a bill on my credit card from "NewCommu*RECURRINGPAY" and after reading posts, I think it is from Frontier.  My husband spoke to them over the phone and they lowered our monthly bill from the amount we paid through Verizon, however, they charged us a one time fee to make the change.  Hope this helps:)

Had a charge from the same NewCommu*ONETIM. After searching my email for charges of the same amount and date I figured out it was just my bill payment to Frontier Communications for my landline.

Lots of companies still use other companies to process their charges, so just cause you don't recognize the name or number doesn't mean its a scam.

I found the same charge on my acct. the ph# attached was 877-426-8188 out of TX I called and was told the number was no longer in service. I googled the NEWCOMMU and found you folks that got me to thinking so I checked and that is the name Frontier is using.  The town I live in went from Verizon to Frontier Comm in July and that is when thing went south. Hope this helps, Have a great day.

This is a scam charge! Hit my account via visa check card for over $400! I have bank disputing it as we speak! And yes the only place that had that info was FRONTIER Communications! I think they got hacked! Verizon never had my check card info! Indiana beware!

thanks for posting this. Verizon just sold our service to Frontier, and it's about right for a cable bill, so I assume that's what happened in my case.

I also had a charge (ACH) from NEWCOMMU on my checking account. I have determined it to be from Verizon and not fraud. I contacted Verizon and they have never heard of NEWCOMMU but said with all the recent changes (Verizon in Oregon has been sold to Frontier Communications), this may be the name of the collecting merchant.

I also saw NewCommu*RECURRINGPAY on my statement and couldn't figure out who it was until I found this thread.  This is probably happening to all of the folks in the Oregon/Washington/Idaho area since Verizon sold operations there to Frontier Communications.  I bet this is what all those calls from Verizon about "an important change" were that I kept hanging up on.  :-)

Thanks!  Same problem with me, it was Verizon automatic bill pay.  I called my bank to dispute the charge, and they were going to cancel it, until I found this post and figured it out!

I just spoke w/ Verizon Customer Service as my recent online payment showed up as "NewCommu*ONETIMEPAY".  I don't have automated payments, but log in monthly to Verizon to pay my bill with a credit card.  The gal at Verizon said she was surprised that I hadn't been informed, but their online payments now show up this way as they merged w/ another company for online payments only.  She confirmed that my most recent payment was made and had a 0 balance.

On our Suntrust debit card, we bought items totaling $81.10 from a Lowe's hardware in NC and had a mirror charge of the same amount on the same day charged to NewCommu. It was billed through a JPMorganChase account that had 972-718-7082 as the associated phone #. As in previous notes, a call to the number indicates that mailbox is full to a Sherry Walton.

I got the same debit from New Commu also.  The Credit Union gave me the same number and I got the same full voice mailbox message.  I sent a fraud alert message to Verizon.  When I went to Verizon's "contact us" web page it said "Sorry not available".  The amount deducted is the same as this month's bill and the account information page on the web site says my bill has been paid.  I am still waiting Verizon's response.

Our account was debited 78.47 and we tracked it down to this number also. I also got Sheri Walker (n?) full voice mail. Is this a scam or legit verizon billing?

Not a satisfactory respone by Verizon.  They're just giving you the run around.  At a minimum, they should refund your money.  In addition to the Verizon Fraud direct line I gave above, you also might try calling the Executive Committee direct line at 1-800-483-7988.  These numbers were given to me by a helpful lady at Verizon SW who advised me to get the names of everyone I talk to at Verizon and document the time of all the calls I make.

I called Verizon Fraud today and talked to someone named James who was very puzzled by these events and said he would turn it over to a fraud investigator.  I am supposed to hear back from them.  If not, I'll make additional calls and contact the FTC.

Strangely enough, it appears that the Sherri Watkins whose voicemail you contacted, is quite likely the same person as Sherron Watkins, the former VP of Enron who sent the famous email to Ken Lay saying that she suspected something was amiss with the company.  I have no idea why whoever is doing this scheme is using her phone number if that is indeed the case.

The whole situation is very strange.  Someone is making a lot of money by dinging the bank accounts of a lot of people for small sums (mine was $11.68)  and hoping that the victims won't notice.

The person I talked to at Verizon said there were some business transactions that took place behind closed doors and different parts of Verizon are now owned by other companies.    I have only been charged once for the amount, my balance is $0 now and Verizon never "charged" me, only the othe Communication network did.  I'll still be watching my banking account very closely for other charges.  I don't understand why the number would go to a Sherri Walkins.  Hopefully it's a typo error for the phone number and poor Sherri has nothing to do with it except that her voicemail is getting very full.

The 972-718-7082 number is a landline in Irving, TX and it's through Verizon SW, headquartered in Irving, TX and with a very similar phone number -- 972-718-5000.  This may well be an inside job or someone may have hacked into Verizon SW's computer to get our bank account info.

The direct line to Verizon Fraud is 1-800-483-6922

Our bank account was debitited (supposedly by Verizon) for $11.68 for a call made to this number.  Verizon cannot explain the charge.  My bank called the number and got the voicemail of Sherri Walkins or Walton.

This is obviously a scam.  The 972 718 7082 number is in Irving, Texas.

This is some sort of scam.  Check the website below for several more reports made in the last few days by others whose accounts have been bilked:

I received a call from Verizon saying they made a billing error for direct payment customers and will change the billing in the next billing cycle.  Double check that the amount taken out is the same as your Verizon bill to make sure it is legit and then confirm that Verizon did receive your payment.

Barbara,

I tracked my charge to Verizon, but they are not sure themselves why the charges are not coming up up as Verizon charges.  Good luck.
