They called me at my business and claimed to be a "doctor somebody" and as I am a physician, I interrupted my day and talked to them. They wanted to pick up a donation at my office and then at my residence. WHAT A SCAM!!

They gave an address on Maple ave for me to drop off a check, but there is no TX FOP at this address.

I received a call this afternoon from this number and said Hello and a man picked up and started his speech about being from the Texas Fraternal order of Police and he was calling to solicit a donation and stated that I had donated in the past which I have never donated to anything over the telephone.

I received a call 11/20/08 morning left message on answering machine, speech about discussing a job.  male named daren.  Creepy when officers can offically harrass citizens in the name of fundraising.  Sad but most of all scary.  The law is supposed to protect you not harrass.

When you get a call from this number hang up they are not part of the Police Department and very little of the money would go to Officers, if any.   If you want to donate to your local Police Department contact them directly and ask them to give you the number to the local Police Association.

I have been getting a lot of calls lately too. Normally, I am not at home and no message is left on the machine. Today, I was home and I answered, even though I could see the caller ID as TEXAS FOP. When I answered, the man asked to talk to my husband. My husband works, so I asked if I could take a message, and they said, no , they would call back later. There will be no later. My husband never answer the home line... These guys harass call...they never stop. Now we just ignore it all. Too many scams now days. Police departments should know better than to call and solicit money. They tell you not to respond to such calls...so why would they use it for their own donation raising?
The number that called us this time was 469-718-0644

It may be worth your time to read that the better business bureau does NOT even consider the TX FOP to be a CHARITY! So the fact that they are calling in mass quantities bordering on harassment and presenting themselves as such (though they may not use the word "charity" based on their speech anyone would describe them as such) is just plain wrong.

http://www.bbb.org/bryan/business-reviews/pol ... yan-tx-90002459

In addition on the BBB link it will also provide the info on the warning that the TX atty general's office issused regarding donating to organizations claiming to benefit public safety officers.

What is the biggest shame of all in this is that they are tarnishing the badge and if those who are even the strongest supporters of law enforcement are turned off to donating to the larger solicitation groups when called because trust has been undermined - one has to question what they have done to the trust in law enforcement period! Law Enforcement is one of those professions in which trust is nearly sacred and to no longer be able to TRUST law enforcement or those calling on their behalf and being able to take them at their word, does serious damage to the reputation of their ability to do their work on the street as well... it makes you just a little less likely to trust them and take them at their word because your only interaction may have been the non-stop harassing, not-so truthful and honest phone calls with the Texas Fraternal Order of Police in the past several months or years for some... I wish they would recognize the damage they are doing to their badge and that the other agencies would pressure them to stop these under-handed, bullying tactics that I believe are predatory.  If you are receiving multiple calls and harassing calls, or calls which are mis-representing what they do or can do a complaint should be filed with the Texas Attorney Generals Office - http://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/nonprofits.shtml

These folks called me as well.  My response was, "Can I make the donation at the local Police Department?"  The gentleman was very plesant in responding I could do the donation online with my credit card (giving them access to it) or by mail through a check (in which they get hold of the account numbers and routing numbers), but never even responded to the original question, "Can I make my donation at the local police department...  I would love to donate, but I just can not trust the old bob and weave, side stepping the question.  If they really are are organization representing the police, they should be fully aware of why I hesitate and will not donate.

Many times these phone calls are terminated before you answer. Their telemarketing machines do this regardless if you answer or not. The objective for many of these telemarketers is to get name and/or number to show up on your caller ID. If those numbers show up on your caller ID, then they (telemarketing group) are paid small amount of money (it is small, but multiply that times 10,000 calls a day and you have a business). The process is called DIP charges and they are paid by the local carrier to a third party vendor who maintains some control over 911 databases and SS7 switches. They make deals with these telemarketing companies to call these phone numbers in order to get paid. The third party vendors get paid and they pay these telemarketing companies in order to offset the telemarketers' costs. But here is the clincher, there are companies that are set up to do nothing but call your number and hang up and they get paid for it. The phone companies can't stop it because they don't get dinged on the duration of the call, but if the call went through with caller name or number on it. Major cities around the nation are set up with these bogus companies that do this. It is legal for now and you and I pay for it to maintain the 911 databases. Some idiots have found a loophole and exploit it, thus raising our cost.

Lastly, if it is an 800 number or so (or if they ask you to call back an 800 number) then the telemarketer may be getting paid twice. The 800 numbers may go to a lata where long distance termination is higher than usual. Even though these calls terminated in a high dollar lata, most likely it is being shipped by VOIP to another area.

Now YOU know.  We can make this country great again. Stop these thieves.

We receive these calls at least twice per week and they won't talk to me, they only want to talk to my wife.  We have politely told them on numerous occasions that we weren't interested and we have asked them to remove us from their call list.  They assure us this will happen but we continue to get their calls.

The same thing just happened to me. They man wanted to talk to my wife. I had spoken to an FOP previously and he said that I had pledged $25. I said I had not done that, I had requested materials. He said that they had sent 2 letters already and would not be sending more and he wanted to take care of the money now and I could use my credit card, I told him I was not comfortable with that. He said he could give me an address, I said sure, and he said thanks for your time and hung up. Seemed like a scam. Big time.

A caller (Caller ID TX FOP) identifying himself as calling for the Texas Fraternal Order of Police asked for a member of my family who was at work. When I offered to take a message, he said he would call back. Today he called, and again I offered to take a message again. Instead he gave his spiel about soliciting donations of at least $10 and offered a police decal for the car in return. When he asked me if I could send that, I said I would deliver the message and could I have a call back number. He tried to get off the phone. I asked for an address to which to send a donation, and he said "Good bye" and hung up. This certainly sounds like a scam.

They are required to tell you how much money is actually allocated to the charity(police officer "training & equipment") I asked and they said 27 cents of every dollar actually goes to police training. The remainder goes to "adminstrative cost."  This is similiar to the "Texas State Trooper Booster" organization. Same idea. Both are legal(technically), but are really in the business of making money. Tell them to remove your name/phone# their list. Talk to your state representative about such practices.

Non-profit Organization
See <http://www.texasfop.com/organization/fund-raising.cfm>. There's a link to a Word document where you'll find the statement:

"You may be visiting this page because you recently received a fundraising telephone call. You will be glad to know that only actual employees of the Texas State Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police (TXFOP) are currently making these calls. "

There is also a sample of their pledge form.

So it appears that TX FOP is making these calls and because they're a registered non-profit, are exempt from the National and the Texas do no call lists.

I politely requested to be removed from their list and the person on the other end was nice about it. We'll see if tonight was my last call.

Best of luck, all.

These calls are from the TX Fraternal Order of Police.  They're solicitation calls.  I've gotten them at least three times every day for the past two months.  What gets me is that when I listened to the spiel the first time and said I wasn't interested, I was told they're only allowed to call ONCE.  Talk about a lie!
