I always make sure that I am on my state's list to get NO TELEMARKETING CALLS.  They just keep coming and this number is just one in a long line of people who want to help my credit, fix my computer, pretend they are from a legitimate credit card company and try to find out info from me.  I now own a large gong which I thoroughly enjoy using whenever I get these calls.  It doesn't solve the problem but it makes me feel better.  I really don't know what else to do.  I have contacted the telephone company, the police, the state rep.  Now they get THE GIANT GONG.

These people ring quite often on my land line, usually in the middle of the day, but this morning they woke my up at 6 am! Needless to say they were given an earful, and then a hang up.  Do people actually fall for this?  Please please leave us alone!  The only reason I keep this line is for emergencies, and it seems that I am paying for crank callers, people trying to scam me, and political messages (pre-election).  When is this world going to become a nicer place again?

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

I was called on my cell this morning at 7:00am EST. Woman with very heavy accent said I had a problem with my computer. I asked how she knew and she said it was reported by a server and she mentions a Window virus. I told her I had a Mac. She kept going and I repeated it - a long pause, then she hung up.

Recieved a call from this number at 6am this morning!  My husband answered without looking at the caller ID as his mother is elderly and a call at this hour is worrying.  Also, the school sometimes calls to cancel school at this hour.  Normally we don't answer calls with numbers we don't recognize.
After saying hello a few times the person on the other end of the line just hung up.  How immensely annoying!  I'm happy to find this site as I will definitely use the horn in the phone trick or something annoying to turn the tables on them.

Same here. Called at 6:25am EST.  Said they were calling from Windows IT department and receiving virus messages from my computer, and asked if I was sitting in front of my computer.  I asked who they were, they asked if I was in front of my computer.  I asked again and they hung up.

You people just need to turn off your answering machine and stop answering your phone unless you are 100% certain you know the person calling you. I've been doing that for over a year.  It does no good to talk to scammers such as these and it's best to just let the phone ring. And calling them back is the most stupid idea ever, since the number is so bogus, you might get charged an arm and a leg for a call to who knows where. Since we can't kill them it's best to just ignore their worthless a***s.

Same as above.  Thick accent.  Computer.  I told him we were on the do not call list and not to call back.  He asked Why and I said because I didn't want to talk to him and hung up.  He immediately called back.  I told him to stop and then my husband took the phone.  The guy started swearing so my husband cranked the stereo in his earn, each time the jerk called back (about 10 times).  Wow!

I received a call from this number at 5:58 am today. When I answered after the third ring, no one was there. I'm on every do not call list there is, so I shouldn't get calls like this. And I certainly shouldn't get calls that early in the morning.

We recieved a phone call at 6:30am telling us we are having the same experiences listed above, and the caller went a little further, he wanted us to turn on our computer. That's when we ended the call. They made it sound official by telling us my name and address. I looked up the phone number 1 212 000-9999 and found this blog, this needs to stop ASAP.

When I called the number back it said "we are unable to call this number, and to hang up and try again", which I did and recieved the same message. Once again this needs to stop ASAP.

8:00 a.m. EST on a Saturday morning.  What?  I answered my cell phone and said "hello" twice, then they disconnected the call.  I also had the same experience last evening with 866-948-0585 which also seems to be a scam phone number.  Is nothing sacred in this world?

I kept asking him what computer he was calling about but he would not answer.  He did have my name and address.  I told him I would call him back he gave me a number that starts with 505.

I just got off the phone having the same experiences listed above...but my call went a little further, After refusing to turn on my computer for several minutes, and being passed to 3 different people, I decided to play along. He asked me to click on Start, Right click on Computer, click on Management. Then Click "yes" to continue (for permission), Then click on Event Viewer, WIndows Log. Then he directed me to the middle of the page to scroll down and count the number of "Errors". I counted to 45 errors and stopped, although there were more. Then he explained that we needed to fix these software errors on my system. He said he was going to connect me to the technical dept so a tech could connect to my computer to walk me thru deleting them. Um, I dont think so! I refused. So to try to convince me, he told me that when you buy a computer, you fill out the registration with your information, and he could prove that he had the number assigned to my file and computer. He then instructed me to hold ctrl/windows button/and push the letter R. I again refused. (not sure what that would do, maybe open a connection for them?) I told him I thought this was a scam (for the 4th time) and I wasnt going to allow anyone access to my personal files. Then he asked if I had a mobile phone. Yes, I replied. He directed me to call 1-510-374-4990 while he waited, so after verification we could continue. I refused. He said he would call me tomorrow - oh joy... His name was Ricky (yeah right) and the company he supposedly represented was National Computer Maintenience Department. He said they were based out of CA, I asked why then is the number you're calling from come up on the caller ID as NY. He said they were the call center. That they have local technicians in all towns. I said I dont need your services, I am protected by Norton Antivirus. He then said that obviously that isnt working because of all the errors we found. Unbelievable! I hope people dont willingly give up their info. At one point, he told me that he can guarentee he wasnt a scam, because he lives in the US and understands my curosity because he, himself recieves 20-30 calls per day trying to scam him. WHAT A JOKE!

Sarcastic little turd.  All other messages here resonate with my experience.  Thick Eastern accent, bad connection, persistent pitch, and rude manner. Same nonsense about computer viruses. I told him plainly and firmly to put me on his Do Not Call list.  I asked him to say Yes or No if he understood.  He then said he didn't understand English, and asked me to say it in Spanish. Fancies himself a comedian in addition to being a scam artist.  I like the air horn idea.

You might want to consider buying a loud whistle or an air horn and give it a nice big blast every time they call.  That might deter them from calling again!

Caller type: SCAM

I just got a call from a man with a seemingly think Indian accent.  He told me my computer had many viruses and he was going to help me remove them.  I knew it was a scam, but I was curious as to what he was up to so I played along.  He'd tell me to click on this and that, then asked what the computer said.  I didn't do anything he said, but lied and replied that my computer had just frozen up.  He said it was because of all the viruses I had on my computer.  I asked for his name and number so I could call him back, but he wouldn't give me that information and finally after I kept asking he hung up.  I'm putting a nice loud whistle by my phone in case he calls back.  I'll give him a real earful if he does!
