Yes, a trunk line for U.S. Embassies.  Mine turned out to be a call from a friend stationed in, well, I'd better not say - but it wasn't any of the countries mentioned above.  Let's just say if the NSA wasn't tracking my calls already, they may be now :-)

This #240 553 0586 keep calling my cell phone and whenever I answer they hung up.

This number is a number through Net Box that US Embassies use to use to call back to the US locally (similar to trunk lines with Vonage).  It is quite possible that calls from US Embassies worldwide are calling the US using this number in Maryland (where the service is provided).  I use it often since I work at a US Embassy overseas.  Ironically, I did not recognize this number when I used it to call my cell phone in the US (being used by my spouse).  When I researched this number, it was me who I was investigating (calling from this number.)

They called at 10 PM last night.  No message.  I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize.  

You people who say it is a legit number, have you not heard of "call spoofing"?   [Through companies that should be illegal!] anyone can get ANY number or name to show up on your caller ID.  You absolutely CANNOT KNOW that a number is REAL just by the number that appears on your caller ID.

It's a legit number.  As others have said, routed from a US Embassy through Maryland.

April 23, "13  got a call, asking for Margaret - when I answered SHE said, are you any relation to ???? I said yes, he WAS my son but we haven't heard from him in years. They found my (58 yr old) son, DEAD, in BeLive Mexico. Mentioned "trying" to get in touch with his boys but no answer BUT they will call me back, as of now - they have no autopsy report. I called my son & daughter & right then they both said  "A SCAM" as she looked up the # & sure enough.  The # SHE gave me WAS the Embasy BUT the # she was calling from was this one, on my phone !!

Yes that is correct, it is a fixed number for those calling from US Embassies around the world. My sister got a call from the US Embassy in Colombia but it was this number on the caller ID.

This is a number for an overseas "trunk" line that allows US embassy employees living overseas to call back to the state on a "domestic" line. The lines comes through Maryland, so that's why the area code is a Maryland one.  So, for example, our son is living in Thailand working for the US Embassy in Bangkok.  He uses this number to call home and talk to us.  It's used by other embassies in other countries as well.

I recv'd a call from this # today!  I couldn't hardly understand them on my voice mail due to there accent!  First of all I am not Mrs Shoemaker!  The lady that left the message did say she was from the US Congress and that her name was Betty!  She asked that I return her call but she did not leave a #!  That's why I didn't take it so serious!  But due to having caller ID I did have her #!

this is an embassy call. trust me on this one it's from Italy.

They have repeatedly called 603-621-9700 and keep saying they are calling from the Embassy in Milan and someone we know needs help.  They are relentless

This call came in at 12:10am. This is SO UNCALLED FOR!!

I have no idea who this is but they call my cell phone reletlessly and now, all of the sudden I'm getting called on my direct line at work. They hang up when I answer.
