This was the most bizarre call ever.  I got called by a man with poor English saying that 'my partner and I entered a contest over Christmas' and we were selected to win one of four prizes and that he was calling from Sony.  He assumed our ages incorrectly and then told us to collect our prizes we didn't need to spend any money, or give any personal information, we just had to show up in Georgetown in Washington DC and we would receive our prize.  When I told him he had my age incorrect, he said that was too bad and I basically just said no thank you and got off the phone.  Definitely random, and totally strange.
OMG how thick are they?

Got  a call off them today! same story as above....that they work for microsoft  and my computer was at risk etc etc so i thought i would play a wee game with them!!
I told them (after 5 mins cause he wouldn't shut up) that i only have 1 computer in the house and that it belonged to my daughter and was a barbie plastic gaming one! he then went on to tell me that he could fix it as it has a nasty virus on it. I was telling them that it was pink and helps you learn numbers and your abc's etc and that it doesn't connect to the internet! haha (couldn't help myself)
then when i asked for his number he said it was +44141416080 and then hung up and rung me back from 016712179514. I was trying to make polite chit chat about the weather and asked him where he was from to which he said....China (to be fair it sounded it), making out that my daughters barbie 'toy' laptop was a risk i asked for his name and he said Andrew Smith....(sounds very Chinese), i told him my name was Victoria Beckham and that i worked for the Police and he could call me PC Andrew Smith......OMG he sooooo fell for it as well!!!!! then i told him i was recording the call he said .... "get f**ked" (in a very English accent) and hung up!!!! SCAM SCAM SCAM....and not a convincing one at that!!!

Total scam. Never answered the phone, not first time they tried to call, either. I worked in IT, there is no way they can see ur computer, and microsoft would never contact you in that manner. Unfortunately, they are the prob, installing malicious software, keyloggers. The people that fall for this scam are unlikely to ever find this page....sigh...

I too received a call today (January 12. 2012) from "UR PC CARE". The man told me same thing as he did to you all. When I refused to accept his assistance he said something like this: 'Listen, it is simple, just sit in front of your PC, and follow my instructions'. I replied by saying: "I do not own a PC. I have a MacBook." He said: "Sorry." and then immediately hung up. Obvious scam indeed. As of matter of fact there is an article about this scam. The title of the article is: "Microsoft at a loss over Event Viewer Scam"

I recieved a call from 'John Smith' who said he was calling from UR PC Care in Columbus Ohio in Canada.  (Ohio is NOT in Canada) When I resisted his instructions to turn on my computer and go to a certain screen, he was abrupt and passed me to his supervisor 'Peter' who was also rude and told me I needed to fix my computer because through the Internet he could tell I was transmitting viruses.  (I am not, and they can not - I am a computer tech and know how to keep my machine clean).

This is a scam and should not be participated in.  If they call you simply say good bye and hang up.

I received a call from URPCCARE today.  the number that came up for me on call display was 9-1822.  The guy started out saying they have tracked a bunch of malware from my computer and they need to fix it.  when i told him i work in the IT industry and actually do have some knowledge in this area he got down right rude.  i would not install his software or do what they asked.  it took 3 times asking him before he actually offered up that he was working with urpccare.  after i pushed him on it he passed me to his supervisor.  i asked him where he got my number from (the first guy said my ISP, the supervisor said from microsoft).  the fact is he doesn't know how many devices i have, he doesn't even ask where this might be coming from.  these guys are crooks. stay as far away from these guys as possible.

Got call from Bryan Parker, Employee # XP02934, Sounded legit. Showed me his URPCCARE.COM website and my computer errors. Went ahead and gave him my information. Phoned him back @ 1-614-388-8814, spoke to James (manager) asked him to remove his stuff from my computer, then Bryan called back - I asked him to remove themselves from my computer, he hung up.
Question: Should I be worried? They are monitoring everything - can't remove them. Please help!!!!

This is not a legit company.  If they were they wouldn't lie about being from Microsoft, your internet provider or whoever else they originally claim.

They try to take your money for computer service, when in fact they are installing remote access software on your computer, which allows them to use your internet connection anytime, without your knowledge even.  They may not install a virus and may even help you fix some problems, in exchange you give them money and free access to your computer anytime they want it.

Giving some stranger who phones you, remote access to your computer is a very very bad idea, no matter what their claim .  At any point in the future they could install a keylogger or virus of any kind.  You basically have given them free access to your computer.

If you have done anything this company has requested, I suggest you take your computer in to a professional and have it rebuilt/ cleaned to ensure no remenants of their software are still hiding somewhere inside.

Concerned IT repair guy.

I get a call from urpccare.com from a 614 area code.  Same story - wanting to fix my computer and I needed to follow their instructions.  When I asked how he got my number he said from my internet service provider.  I hung up with him knowing something was not right, then called my service provider.  They confirmed this is a scam - they never give out personal information to a third party, they do not outsource internet repair services.  Be wary.

I received a call from a man who knew my name, saying he got my name from my internet provider. He suggested that microsoft is interested in my computer because its reading errors and warnings, which could infect and crash the computer. I replied that its amazing that he could detect such a thing. He answered that they can, and they are phoning microsoft customers running windows because these computer are prone to viruses not detected by other antivirus software (or something like that). I can't really say I heard he worked for microsoft or said with. But he made it sound like microsoft was looking out for me.
So, I let him direct me to urpccare.com, which logged me into their tech services. Here a technian was able to work on my computer after I enter a code that they provided. After the tech scaned my performance, it was suggested that I could buy a warrenty that would include spyware, antivirus, firewalls, as well as this cleaning of warnings and errors for a fee. He said that this was not a sales call because this was not a product.
Well, I could not hold my peace any longer. So, I informed this man that he is offering a product and that no way was I going to pay up to 200 dollars for this service. Especially, since it is very bizzare way to do business. Since, I now felt like I was in a vulnerable position, that my computer would crash at any moment if I didn't do this. Hence, I told him he was asking too much of me and that in no way would I allow this type of business transaction become acceptable. Not even if this type of transaction becomes the norm in the future and we humans are now transhumans opperating with biochemical computers running through our bloodstreams would I let microsoft or him/stranger into my HOME. Or would I?
Because, just maybe if this does become the norm, then I would have to because I am held hostage to the threat of a contaigent and my whole world could be turned off. But then again big brother wouldn't turn us off, since we would be proper slaves. So, our only human choice would to be the ghost in the machine and turn ourselves off just to have a real human identity. Therefore, urpccare.com is a joke/scam/incrediably ignornant of all human dignity.

I live in Australia and got a call from a woman who I could barely understand(thick accent) I asked her the name of
the company and the phone number and this is what she told me:

Your PC
3015342017

I told her never to call me again, especially since I am on the Do Not Call Register

I am pretty sure this was a SCAM to tell me something wrong with my computer.

I hung up.
