For what it's worth, I chatted with Bank of America through my online banking portal after I received a call (with no message left) from this number and they said they didn't recognize that phone number at all.  I also had them check all of my accounts for any suspicious activity and they said everything was fine.

I have a freeze on all of my credit reports so if someone was trying to open a credit card they theoretically shouldn't be able to, although I'm not convinced that it could never happen.  The BoA person I talked to could have just been too lazy to actually check the number and my accounts too.  So, I'm going to keep a tighter watch on all of my accounts over the next couple of weeks just to be absolutely sure nothing is going on but, as of this point I'm thinking the number is a scam.

This number is from Bank of America's Fraud Services department, located in Newark, Delaware.  I know this because my husband is a manager there, and this number pops up on my cell whenever he calls from his office (it's a direct line that calls out but does not accept incoming calls).  They monitor checking accounts, credit cards (activity on existing accounts and suspicious looking applications for new accounts), and wire transfers ... so there may be any number of reasons why they are calling you.  Please take it seriously.  It's amazing the ends that bad people will go through to get your info, which is why I understand the concern everyone's sharing here.  It's good to be vigilant about personal information, but this number is legitimate.

Also, there are maybe 5,000+ people who work for Bank of America in their Newark office complex, so it's more normal than you think to not speak to the original person who called.  Or, for the customer service rep to not be aware that you spoke to someone else previously.

The comment from "Wisdom" is spot on.

Actually, this number is Bank of America.  My husband works there in their Fraud Detection services, and it's one of their backdoor numbers.  So if you get a call from this number, do take it.

Received a call from this number. It was a guy from BofA telling me someone tried to access my online account from Tunisia and succeeded - and that I need to get a new account number, user ID, etc.

There was nothing suspicious about the call. I was entirely impressed by the thoroughness of this guy, explaining what a phishing email looks like, telling me what to do next. Obviously they don't want to have to cover claims on fraudulent activity...but then again neither do I.

I suggest answering if this number calls.

Close - it's fraud. Or at least it was fraud in my case. and the # is actually legit - you can make them verify it by asking them about how you have used your card. If they're legit, they'll tell you the last charge, etc. (see my post below)

So I was called from an unavailable number, and the vm told me to call 1 866 518 1695.  I called them and, after multiple attempts to verify my identity (I apparently didn't have the right password), I received a call from 302 458 0973, which I picked up. After I was on hold for 15 minutes (I had asked for a manager) I was called AGAIN from an unavailable number.  I upgraded to a manager and I asked him to provide any proof that he was who he was, and he pretty much said he couldn't.  I then called the number on the back of my card, and the people at BofA verified that I did in fact talk to someone from BofA.

So, YES my 302 caller WAS legit...but it's SO STUPID that they can't verify themselves when they tell you to call...esp re a fraud / change in personal info situation. It's been 45 minutes since the situation started and I'm still typing this.

If you call the number back, it tells you it is no longer used and they refer you to an 800 number.  It is Bank of America, but had no idea why they called after looking up my phone number

Rejected the call. Jessica (who didn't get the company name out so I could hear it) left a voicemail saying that they wanted to confirm information about a financial request in my name. They gave me a number to call (1-888-231-6262) and a PIN. This is most likely a hoax.

Just got a call from them a few minutes ago.  Did not answer as I did not know the phone number.  They did leave a message.  However, I have not used the card in several months and have already checked to ensure there was no activity.  Person who called was "Melanie Carter".

I have received two phone calls from the number 302-458-0973, the first time I didn't answer assuming it was a solicitor, today they called again and I realized it was the same number but I figured if they really needed to speak to me they would leave me a voice mail...neither time have they left a voice mail. Anyway, I found this site and became somewhat concerned when I realized that I just recently applied to open a BOA credit card (though I haven't yet activated the account) and thought maybe somehow something went wrong. I just now called BOA and their fraud department which is correctly listed above as 1-800-427-2449, and the woman told me that they did not have any kind of account information under my name, or my telephone number. So now I'm just confused, fraud on a nonexistent account? Now I'm just kind of hoping the 302 number calls back one more time so I can answer and really figure out what is going on.

If you get a call from this number(302-458-0973), consider answering it. My friend got a call, and it was from her Sovereign Bank credit card reporting suspected fraud on her credit card. The phone number does come up as Bank of America.  Her local bank card is issued by FIA, which is a division of Bank of America. So, even though she didn't recognize having any accounts listed as BOA, there was a connection. Turns out someone did get her card #, set up an acct online, changed her addr to a different state, and made a purchase over $2500 at a store near the false address. The card company questioned the activity, called her, and the card was quickly closed. She now goes through the process of checking credit reports, filing a fraud warning, etc to protect herself.  Very scary.  Don't ignore. Trust, but verify.  She did then call the 800# on the back of her card just to verify the activity and make sure it was not a phishing scam.

I got a letter from B of America saying that they had been trying to reach me by phone. I didn't recognize this number so I didn't answer..I called back to check with them after I got the letter and it was indeed their fraud Dept. There was a charge on my account that was from an old card number. It was from a company I had a subscription with while I still had the old card number. This is a legit'  number.

I called that number and tried a few extensions at random. Ext 22310 got me the voice mail for John McIntyre. Ext 22311 got me the voice mail for Mike Fetman (?).
Both recordings said they were with Bank of America.

If you do not want to respond to the caller, simply call the Bank of America directly.  Don't leave it.  I didn't.

Woman named "Lois" left message and 888-221-4299 although caller id was 302-458-0973. Said she needed copy of death certificate of my deceased relative because there was a life insurance policy through their credit card. I called back and got "David" who said "Lois" was on the phone but they picked up each other's cases. When I told him the last name he knew, without any information or looking anything up, what I was calling about. He told me to send a copy of the death certificate. I told him that because I did not initiate the call he would need to email or fax to me some proof that he was legitimate. He said "the death certificate is public information" and I said "well, then, you don't need me." He got very nasty and asked if I would prefer they put in a claim against the estate. Any doubt about the legitimacy of the call was gone. I told him not to threaten me and he hung up.

never ever call the number left on vmail messages.
If you have concerns - call the number on the back of your card or found on your statements.

If you do not have a card - look up the website on the internet and call the official numbers there.

I received a call this morning from 302-458-0973.  Was left an automated message saying I needed to call an 800 number to verify transactions on my credit card.  I do have a B of A account and did call to ensure this was their fraud dept calling - and it was.

received a call today from 302-458-0973.  I called the #, it referred me to an 800# which I called.  The recording stated, "card services". It ended because I didn't have a 5 digit extension.  I have no idea who this is and I have no cards with any such company.

called me three times last night when I finally answered a woman told me she had been trying to reach me because someone was trying to apply for a Bank of America American Express card in my name over the internet.  She connected me to another number (an 866#)so I could set up an identify theft case, once connected a guy ask for my soc # and I told him I wouldn't give it out over the phone, he said he understood because they called me but I need to go on line and talk to someone to get the case started.  Today I called Bank Of America and they told me that they DO NOT offer American Express credit cards and they had no ap with my info on it.  They DID NOT ask for my soc. #.

Ok so let me get this straight - everyone on here as one thing in common - they are being called by this number and being left messages saying it is Bank of America.  One *smart* person actually called and found out there was something going on with their accounts.  And you all are afraid to call it because you think it is not legitimate?  That does not make any sense.  If there was fraud on your account - HOW would you expect to be notified if not by the company?  If it were me, I would be all over it bc I would be afraid for my credit to be jacked up!
Also - a lot of companies are based out of a particular region - in this case, 302 is a Delaware area code - however their call centers which accept inward calls are 800 numbers.  That is why you call the number you are given in the voicemail instead of calling the number which appears on your caller ID back.
