I got the same call today.  Someone with an accent so thick I could hardly understand him.  I'm in Victoria, BC, Canada.  I asked him "If you know so much about my computer, what version of windows am I running?!" but of course he was babbling so fast I didn't get an answer.  I said "If you really were from MS then my call display wouldn't say "Unavailable name and number" and hung up.

They are at it again. I received call last year and now today. They seem to be getting more bold and feel confident police or Microsoft won't spend any effort or money to shut them down. He wasn't the least bothered when I told him it was a scam and that I would send phone number to RCMP.
Damn annoying! I was enjoying a good hockey game they interrupted. Maybe time to invest in a Mac.

It just happened to me about 10 minutes ago.  Somebody named Brett Williams called from that number claiming that I had security concerns with my computer.  He had an accent.  I told him I was busy and would call him back and he gave me his name and number.  But with his accent, I do not think Brett is his real name

These calls have been coming in for months and the first I received was last fall. I politely refused their assistance since my laptop was having a new hd installed (due to being defective not virused). I told my friend who works at HP and not a week later this friend mentioned that a person brought their computer into the shop and said that they had this call and actually let them into his computer and gave his info to them, they stole all his info and cleared out his accounts!
They have called me numerous times and I usually just tell them to blast off but today when they called I once again told him I have no concerns with my system. I asked where he was calling from his name and phone number. He became very defensive then finally gave me the name Rick Love, windows support at 321-1280-6757 (that's the number he gave) and immediately told me that he was only trying to help with my computer problems since I am not a computer pro. I told him I have very good protection on my system and yes I am a computer pro. ;-)
Then he yelled at me "why are you playing me like this?!" In my ever so sweet voice I asked "who's playing who here? You called me remember?" He continued to try to convince me to let him fix my computer until he finally just shouted "**** OFF!! Just **** OFF THEN!!"
We do need to spread this around as I believe that for every one of us that avoids being scammed there is two others that are coerced into giving their info out.
BTW the caller id came up as; Unknown Name # 1-510-943-3047

Folks, the b*****ds calling you are criminals and deserve no civility. Blow their ears off with a whistle, an air horn or your home smoke alarm (hold phone really close, then press test button). God will forgive.

This group is still at it. They called twice today. I told them that they are not associated with Microsoft and the caller, who sounded like an intoxicated east indian, agreed with that, and I told him he had no right to use the Windows name. I told him I knew it was a scam and that he was not to call my number again. We will see what happens. You would think the folks at Mictosoft would do something about thses people.

I got a call from them today.  I live in the UK.  He asked for my father-in-law so I knew it was a scam because we have given my number to other people who have tried to scam him.  He said he was from "Windows Services" and had such a strong Indian accent I had to get him to repeat things.  He said that they had noticed that my computer was downloading bad things.  Since my father-in-law's computer is off and in another town, this seemed unlikely.  I asked his phone number and he said 1321 2806 757.  I asked where he was phoning from and he said Yorkshire.  I said that phone numbers in the UK start with a zero and he put the phone down.  Apparently they don't like experts!

I too had a call this evening (Auckland, New Zealand)
Man on the phone stated he was from Windows Support, and that I had a virus on the computer that I was using at home, he starting stating that it was malware and was causing my computer performance problems and sending my information out onto the internet.
I queried the caller some more about how he knew this to be the case, and asked him to provide me with the name of the company he was calling from again, he just stated he was from a company called Windows Support, when I asked whether he could provide me with the company website he said that he could not provide me with that information, I then asked for his name he stated it was "Mike Bravo", I asked for the number that I could call him back on (obviously I had no intent to do such) but thought it was worth a try to get as much information from possible from these creepy telemarking hoaxes. I just hope that there is enough information to the public about these people, as I am sure there will be some people that they will catch with there spin. WATCH out for this creepy hoax.

...and they are still at it in June 2011, calling Canada, claiming to be from Microsoft/Windows. I got the same call, from this number, and same spiel. What a scam. "We have been getting a lot of error messages from your computer...I need you to log in...". I told him I'd call him back. That's as likely as him being a genuine Microsoft employee.

Pity the people who a) fall for these things and b) are so desperate and/or unethical that they participate in perpetrating these rip-offs.

Received call today from a guy saying his name was Peter. said he was from windows and my computer was reporting major errors causing memory issues for my PC. Kept telling me to turn on my computer and he would walk me through a few easy steps to correct this issue. I questioned him about this and told him I had no idea who he was and he could be a hacker and was giving him no info. He kept repeating himself saying  " I told you I am from Windows so just turn on your computer and I will give you some prompts to correct this issue". He also gave me his name and I asked for phone number. He the repeated for me to turn on my computer. I said I'd call back to verify they were who they said they were and hung up. I then googled this and found this site. They are persistent I must say. They called back twice well typing this. First call they hung up, second a guy said hello then he hung up.

I'm the person who posted the softpedia news article and said PCs should be reformatted. I think you're safe because you did not hand over the credentials needed for him to log into your PC and you uninstalled the downloaded software. I will still suggest using System Restore (google "windows system restore" and read up on it or ask your friends) to reset the PC to a previous state before the day of the download (it's easy). You can also take your PC to a local shop, tell them what happened and get their opinion, and it may be worthwhile to pay them to check it out professionally. Best of luck.

I was called today by a man with a heavy East Indian or Asian accent, who said he was from Windows and they received a lot of notices that my computer had a lot of error messages.  He had me type 'prefetch' into my Run textbox and bring up the file to show me that my computer had a lot of errors and warnings in it that needed to be fixed.  I'm normally cautious and I asked him several times if he was for real and he said Yes, he was really calling from Windows.  Then he sent me to a website called Teamviewer.com and asked me to click on the free download button, which I did.  Then he walked me through installing this free file sharing program.  I asked him again if this was for real and he said yes, that this program would help me remove the errors.  I have an old computer that freezes a lot and so that's why I believed he was for real. Then a dialog box appeared that said 'here is your ID and your password to share with the person you want to show your files to.  The man on the phone wanted to know this information.  At that point I said 'Give me your phone number and name and I will call you back because I need to verify who you are.  He gave me the # 321-280-6757 and said his name was Victor Jones (right, with an accent like that - it was so thick I had to ask him to repeat himself several times.  I googled the # and came up with this website saying it was a scam, so I didn't call him back.  Then he called me back and I told him that I knew he was a scammer and hung up on him.  Then I deleted the program I had downloaded.  (June 29, 2011)  Also, I have now heard of two friends in Alberta - I'm in Ontario - who were called recently.  CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THEY ALSO DOWNLOADED THIS PROGRAM AND IF THEY HAVE HAD ANY VIRUSES OR ANYTHING SHOW UP?  Do I need to reformat my whole computer?

Just got the call this afternoon. Had a good time with him, since I am an a** by nature. My computer was sending out crap which had flagged a microsoft error. He couldn't tell me what windows I was using so I played stupid while I surfed the internet. I told him my computer was crashing and that I needed to call him back. He said that he will call me back. I am still waiting for his call. Windows center said his name is Mark. He asked to type in PREFETCH. I have him on the phone.

I just got a call at 5:50 pm on June 13, 2011 from Sam with a strong Indian accent.  He wanted help me delete from my computer some dangerous files. I asked how he got my number, he said from the retailer I bought it from, I said, oh who was that, he said he wasn't sure as that was confidential information that he was not informed of... right.  I told him I would call him back and asked for his number as it showed on my call display as unknown name and unknown number.  He gave me this number and I asked for his extension.  He didn't know what an extension was.  How does a techie from Microsoft Windows 7 Tech Department not know what an extension is?  I asked where he was and he said Miami, FL 32797 - there is no such zip code.  I said I'd call him later, he laughed and hung up.  I think we both know that's not going to happen.  There was never any talk about credit card info probably since I was skeptical from the start.
